Pengendalian Kata Ganda Dalam Kamus Dewan Dan Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia : Satu Kajian Perbandingan, Ibrahim Ahmad
Student Works (2000-2009)
This descriptive comparative study is to find out the similarities and differences in the use of reduplication forms in KD and KBBI. The intertext approach in this study chooses KD and KBBJ as they are regarded as the most authoritative and renowned monolingual dictionaries which becomes a main source of references for vocabulary and linguistic inputs. This study is focused on two major aspects, namely the entry status and the meaning description. The entry status deals with the status of the reduplication forms in the dictionary either as a lemma, sublemma, precategories form. phrase, variant, polysemy, or cross-reference. This also …

Indeterminacy In First And Second Languages: Case Studies Of Narrative Development Of Chinese Children With And Without Language Disorder, Bee Hong Lo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Bilingual children with specific language impairment (SLI) from non English speaking background (NESB) present a major diagnostic problem to speech pathologist and educationist in an English speaking country. There has been no known study on the simultaneous narrative development involving bilingual Chinese children with and without SLI. This longitudinal case study examined the relationship of Chinese (L1) and English (L2) in narrative development in a child with no language difficulty (Child LN) and a child (Child L1) diagnosed as having SLI. The hypothesis posed for this study was that Child L1 has the same developmental profile for narrative skill in …
Bilingual Sentence Processing: Relative Clause Attachment In English And Spanish, Eva M. Fernandez
Bilingual Sentence Processing: Relative Clause Attachment In English And Spanish, Eva M. Fernandez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Monolingual studies have shown that the relative clause attachment ambiguity, illustrated by the sample English sentence below, is ultimately interpreted in different ways by speakers of English and Spanish: (1) Someone shot the maid of the actress that was on the balcony. English speakers tend to attach the relative clause to the lower noun, actress, while in the comparable sentence in Spanish, Spanish speakers generally prefer the attachment to be to the higher noun, maid. This thesis compares the relative clause attachment preferences of monolingual and bilingual speakers of English and Spanish. Data were collected using a speeded self-paced reading …
Learner Concerns At The Missionary Training Center In The Technology Assisted Language Learning Program, Elaine T. Lindsay
Learner Concerns At The Missionary Training Center In The Technology Assisted Language Learning Program, Elaine T. Lindsay
Theses and Dissertations
Chapelle (1997) states the following as a vital question to be asked with respect to computer assisted language learning, “How good is the language experience in CALL for L2 learning?” (n.p.) In order to truly answer this question, investigators need to look to the learner and his concerns. In planning curriculum or designing a program, teachers and administrators normally look toward learner needs. However, these educators are also known to fully implement a new program, at times, without consideration of learner concerns. This appears to be especially true with the use of technology in the second language classroom. Research is …
Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga
Fronting And Palatalization In Two Dialects Of Shoshoni, Dirk Elzinga
Faculty Publications
In Western Shoshoni, a Uto- Aztecan language spoken in northern Nevada, coronal obstruents are found in distributional patterns which depend on the presence or absence of a preceding front vowel ([i] or [e]). In the pattern I refer to as FRONTING, alveolar stops alternate with dental stops - dental stops occur following front vowels (la), while alveolar stops occur elsewhere (lb); this pattern is common to all dialects:
Implementing A Context-Based Teaching Curriculum For French Learners At The Mtc, Stephanie Wallace Olsen
Implementing A Context-Based Teaching Curriculum For French Learners At The Mtc, Stephanie Wallace Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
Two control groups and two experimental groups of missionaries and teachers participated in a study comparing a grammar-based method of teaching to a context-based method. The study lasted for two weeks during June 1997. Each classroom was recorded using a timing-based observation system that captured 13 missionary and teacher language behaviors. The behaviors were recorded in real time and later evaluated to determine in which classroom setting the most real communication occurred. A second purpose was to determine the effectiveness of teacher training with respect to teachers in the experimental group. Findings revealed that missionaries in the context-based classroom received …

Leveraging Analysis Operators In Incremental Generation, Deryle W. Lonsdale
Leveraging Analysis Operators In Incremental Generation, Deryle W. Lonsdale
Faculty Publications
This paper discusses the integration of an operator-based generation component with a similarly-designed natural-language comprehension system. It begins by sketching the cognitive theory and modeling system that frame both systems. A brief summary of the comprehension system and its characteristics follows, including the relevant operators. The generation system with its own operators and processing stages is then introduced. The degree to which these two systems exhibit shared functionality is then explored, and ongoing work is mentioned.
Conversation And The Speech Situation: A Tagmemic Analysis, David Benjamin Frank
Conversation And The Speech Situation: A Tagmemic Analysis, David Benjamin Frank
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Until recently, conversation, considered even now by some to be outside the scope of linguistics, has been neglected in linguistic research. Chapter One of this dissertation argues that the popular distinction between 'theories of language structure' and 'theories of language use' might be abandoned in order to allow a more integrated study of language and a clearer understanding of the nature of language in the context of human life. To forward such an integrated study, a theoretical model on which to base the analysis of both conversation structure and other linguistic structures must be developed. The tagmemic model, developed by …
The Code Model Of Communication: A Powerful Metaphor In Linguistic Metatheory, Perry Louis Blackburn Ii
The Code Model Of Communication: A Powerful Metaphor In Linguistic Metatheory, Perry Louis Blackburn Ii
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The concept of communication is a fundamental notion in the metatheory of linguistics. This study explores the historical development and influence of a particular model of communication, labeled the ‘code model’. This model characterizes communication as a process wherein a source (encoder) conveys a message to a receiver (decoder) through the transmission of a signal. Communication is considered successful if the message received is the same as that sent. This study reviews use of the code model in various linguistic publications, analyzing the code model as a conceptual metaphor and arguing that it structures the way linguists think about communication …
Learning Efficiencies For Different Orthographies: A Comparative Study Of Han Characters And Vietnamese Romanization, Wi-Vun Taiffalo Chiung
Learning Efficiencies For Different Orthographies: A Comparative Study Of Han Characters And Vietnamese Romanization, Wi-Vun Taiffalo Chiung
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
In order to address the question of whether or not to abandon Han characters (Hanji), it is important to evaluate empirically the efficiency of Han writing. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficiency of learning to read and write in Hanji versus learning to read and write in phonemic writing systems, such as Vietnamese Chu Quoc Ngu (CQN) or Mandarin Bopomo. Three experiments were conducted in this study. The first experiment focused on a study of reading comprehension; the second one focused on a study of accuracy of writing dictation; and the last was a study of …
Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga
Facilitative Or Favorable Conditions For Adult Learners To Acquire Oral Proficiency In English, Shigeko Suzuki Hironaga
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Social interaction in the language classroom has been said to contribute to the acquisition of oral proficiency in a target language by presumably facilitating comprehension and learner production through negotiation of meaning. Since a great portion of interaction is initiated by teacher questions, numerous studies on questions have been conducted. The majority of these studies, however, fail to provide adequate explanations for the conditions or environments which result in successful or unsuccessful elicitation. The study investigated the relationship between input, interaction and learner production with a focus on internal and external factors to teacher questions. Factors such as form, function, …

What's Up Wif Ebonics, Y'All?, Abha Gupta
What's Up Wif Ebonics, Y'All?, Abha Gupta
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This paper examines the controversy surrounding the use of Ebonics among African American students in schools in the United States, with a twofold purpose: (1) to focus on the primary function of language as a tool of communication that varies in its use according to the social context; and (2) to provide suggestions to teachers of ways to support students' acquisition of standard English without devaluing the nonstandard variants they may have learned in their homes and communities. The discussion is highlighted in the paper with classroom stories, anecdotes, and vignettes. The paper contains the following sections: Introduction; The Ebonics …

The Names Of Us English: Valley Girl, Cowboy, Yankee, Normal, Nasal, And Ignorant, Laura Hartley, Dennis R. Preston
Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology
A commonplace in United States (hereafter US) linguistics is that every region supports its own standard; none is the locus (or source) of the standard. Historically that is a fair assessment, for no long-term centre of culture, economy and government has dominated in the US.
Review Of Language Policy And Social Reproduction: Ireland 1893-1993, By Padraig Ó Riagáin, Nancy C. Dorian
Review Of Language Policy And Social Reproduction: Ireland 1893-1993, By Padraig Ó Riagáin, Nancy C. Dorian
German Faculty Research and Scholarship
Ó Riagáin has produced the sort of book that many have wished for but doubted they would see: a scrupulously dispassionate, comprehensive account of Irish language fortunes since the late 19th century, and of Irish language policies and outcomes since independence in 1922. Reading his careful, low-key book, one could easily forget that he is writing from and about a country where language issues rouse strong feelings, and also about the single most discussed case of attempted language maintenance and restoration in our time. His meticulous study allows efforts on behalf of Irish to be seen, appropriately, within a broad …
Linguistic Communication Skills In Rural Appalachian Preschoolers, Brenda Pinkerman
Linguistic Communication Skills In Rural Appalachian Preschoolers, Brenda Pinkerman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The impact of risk and protective factors on rural Appalachian preschoolers’ (4-years-old) language skills was explored in a longitudinal study of 85 high socioeconomic risk families. Factors examined were family demographics and social support status, mother-child attachment relationships, maternal personality and attitudes, mother interactional behaviors, and infant and child temperament and behaviors. Child language outcome measures included the Preschool Language Scale-3 and pragmatic analyses of spontaneous speech. Data indicated that this population had significantly less developed linguistic skills than other comparison groups, both standardized and low socioeconomic (SES) risk. Differences in language skills for this sample can be predicted from …
Οτι Recitativum In John’S Gospel: A Stylistic Or A Pragmatic Device?, Stephen H. Levinsohn
Οτι Recitativum In John’S Gospel: A Stylistic Or A Pragmatic Device?, Stephen H. Levinsohn
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
This paper distinguishes three ways in which speech is reported in the Greek of John's Gospel: directly (without the complementizer hoti), indirectly (with hoti and appropriate changes to first and second person references), and in 'hoti-direct' form (i.e., with hoti but without changes to first and second person references). The default way of reporting speech in Koine Greek is directly. Typically, when using direct speech, the reporter purports to reproduce the original speech verbatim. When in indirect form, the speech is not reported verbatim and/or is backgrounded with respect to what follows. The hoti-direct form is …
Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt
Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Yes/No questions, Wh-questions, and embedded questions in Ocotepec Mixtec are described and analyzed within the Government and Binding framework. Questions involving prepositional phrases are unique in that the whole prepositional phrase must be fronted and then the question word is subsequently fronted again. Similar inversion occurs when a possessive phrase is questioned. Smith Stark (1988) documents this phenomenon as occurring across language families throughout Meso-America. Aissen (1996) analyzes it for Tzotzil, a VOS language, as secondary movement to the specifier of PP or DP. This analysis is not possible for Mixtec, a VSO language, so I posit adjunction to the …

English Teachers In The Former G.D.R. Ten Years After The Wende: What’S New?, Renée Flibotte-Lüskow
MA TESOL Collection
English teachers who work in public schools in the eastern part of Germany are doing a very different type of job than they were ten years ago. Although the physical setting and the subject matter is still the same, they are teaching in a new school system based on the West German model. Their personal and professional relationships with the people they work with are different now, and attitudes toward the language they teach have been altered by the political and social changes. This paper seeks to identify interviews conducted in a certain region during a short time span. It …
Adapting The C-L/Cll Approach To A Conventional Textbook Setting: A Novice Teacher’S Reality, Laura Fleher
Adapting The C-L/Cll Approach To A Conventional Textbook Setting: A Novice Teacher’S Reality, Laura Fleher
MA TESOL Collection
This paper is an analysis of the Counseling-Learning/Community Language Learning Approach’s adaptability in a conventional textbook setting. My second internship experience which takes place in a college summer ESL program is the testing ground for my development as a novice C-L/CLL teacher. Questions, doubts, and concerns about the value of a new and an old teaching method are discussed. The importance of distinguishing between approach, method, and technique is advocated. Utilizing the classic cycle of activities is necessary to a novice teacher’s internalization of the C-L philosophy. However, the conventional teaching method, the textbook, is familiar and valued by students …
Language Learning Strategies: A Primer, Carol Lindenbrock Fujii
Language Learning Strategies: A Primer, Carol Lindenbrock Fujii
MA TESOL Collection
The question of why some learners acquire a second language more quickly than others has long been a problem for language teachers. Even when students seem basically equal in terms of opportunity and intelligence, progress can vary greatly. Variations in the language learning strategies students employ could explain why some students do better than others. Students can profitably explore the areas of language learning strategies to become more aware and successful learners. This paper begins by defining language learning strategies as the tools learners use to plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning and to make that learning more efficient. …
Toward Student-Led Reading Discussion In The Classroom: A Teacher’S Journey With Reader Response, Judy Davis
Toward Student-Led Reading Discussion In The Classroom: A Teacher’S Journey With Reader Response, Judy Davis
MA TESOL Collection
This paper traces an ESL teacher’s learning curve with student-based reading discussion, both teacher-guided and student-led. It comments on her pre-teaching experience with formalist and reader response theory as a reader, student, writer, editor, and then as teacher experimenting with student-led discussion in three consecutive terms. Special attention is given to the strategies that were used to build a reading community and to facilitate the release of students’ voices in the reading discussions. The taped, transcribed discussions are summarized for their intellectual content and examined to assess the social and linguistic benefits to the students. Also evaluated are the uses …
Timed Conversation: One Routine For Engaging Large Classes Of Non-Motivated Learners In Meaningful Oral Communication, Bradley J. Deacon
Timed Conversation: One Routine For Engaging Large Classes Of Non-Motivated Learners In Meaningful Oral Communication, Bradley J. Deacon
MA TESOL Collection
This paper will explore an activity called “Timed Conversation” that I use in large classes of relatively unmotivated first and second year non-language majors in a Japanese university setting. Timed Conversation is designed to help students to communicate in native-like and incrementally longer sustained dialogues in the target language. In the activity, the students interact with many partners and practice conversations while practicing various language expressions. In every lesson over the course of a semester they speak in conversations about a number of topics for a set limit of time. The goal is to be able to speak more fluently …
