Infants And Children With Hearing Loss Need Early Language Access, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, C. J. Moreland, Donna Jo Napoli, W. Osterling, C. Padden, C. Rathmann

Linguistics Faculty Works

Around 96 percent of children with hearing loss are born to parents with intact hearing, who may initially know little about deafness or sign language. Therefore, such parents will need information and support in making decisions about the medical, linguistic, and educational management of their child. Some of these decisions are time-sensitive and irreversible and come at a moment of emotional turmoil and vulnerability (when some parents grieve the loss of a normally hearing child). Clinical research indicates that a deaf child's poor communication skills can be made worse by increased level of parental depression. Given this, the importance of …

Challenges Of Cheap Resource Creation For Morphological Tagging, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman Jul 2010

Challenges Of Cheap Resource Creation For Morphological Tagging, Jirka Hana, Anna Feldman

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We describe the challenges of resource creation for a resource-light system for morphological tagging of fusional languages (Feldman and Hana, 2010). The constraints on resources (time, expertise, and money) introduce challenges that are not present in development of morphological tools and corpora in the usual, resource intensive way.

Students' Perceptions Of Their Esl Training In Preparation For University Reading Tasks, Olha Kondiyenko Jun 2010

Students' Perceptions Of Their Esl Training In Preparation For University Reading Tasks, Olha Kondiyenko

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to determine perceptions of former English Language Center (ELC) students of their readiness for university reading tasks after completing their ESL training. Former ELC students who now study or have studied at 10 different American post-secondary institutions provided insights for the study. Through questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, the study collected and analyzed many interesting and revealing comments from participants. Their comments demonstrated that even though the majority of students overall were satisfied with their learning experiences at the ELC, some significant changes still have to be made to be able to fully meet students' educational needs. Participants …

Redefining Nairobi's Streets: Study Of Slang, Marginalization, And Identity, Mungai Mutonya Jun 2010

Redefining Nairobi's Streets: Study Of Slang, Marginalization, And Identity, Mungai Mutonya

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This study attempts an analysis of a restructured Swahili variety spoken by Nairobi's street community: Kinoki. Adapting tools of sociolinguistic inquiry and focusing on Kinoki's divergence from the dominant urban slang, Sheng, the study discusses attitudes toward divergent terms referencing the street community, street activities, and law enforcement officials. Results indicate that street children, unlike their school-going peers living in the city's low-income neighborhoods, redefine pejoratives that devalue and stigmatize street people and their lifestyle. Instead, Kinoki empowers the marginalized community to construct a positive identity, to ameliorate representations of street lifestyle, and to redefine neologisms that reference in-group ( …

Synthetic Corpora: A Synergy Of Linguistics And Computer Animation, Jerry C. Schnepp, Rosalee Wolfe, John Mcdonald

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Synthetic corpora enable the creation of computer-generated animations depicting sign language and are the complement of corpora containing videotaped exemplars. Any design for a synthetic corpus needs to accommodate linguistic processes as well as support the generation of believable, acceptable synthesized utterances. This paper explores one possibility for representing linguistic and extralinguistic processes that involve the face and reports on the outcomes of a user test evaluating the clarity of utterances synthesized by this approach.

The entire project consists of ten main sections with nearly fifty units addressing topics that novice teachers should know before teaching English to non-native speakers. The BTR-TESOL project answers the need for material for untrained novice teachers that will help them to be better prepared in a very minimalistic way to face the challenges and responsibilities that teaching of …

Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson May 2010

Effect Of Visual Input On Vowel Production In English Speakers, Amanda C. Richardson

Linguistics Honors Projects

This study analyzes whether there should be a visual component to a model of speech perception and production by comparing the jaw opening, advancement, and rounding of American English and non-English vowels in the presence and absence of a visual stimulus. Surprisingly, jaw opening did not change production, but the presence of the visual stimulus was found to be a significant factor in participants’ vowel advancement for non-English vowels. This may be explained by lip rounding, but requires further research in order to develop a full understanding of the impact of visual input on vowel production to be used in …

The Effect Of Learning On Sentence Prosody In Japanese, Joanna Baldwin Clark May 2010

The Effect Of Learning On Sentence Prosody In Japanese, Joanna Baldwin Clark

Linguistics Honors Projects

This study investigates the effect of learning on prosodic production competence in native English L2 speakers of Japanese. Intonation contour and speech rate as indicators of competency were examined. It was hypothesized that more experience with Japanese would lead to more native-like prosody. The study tested the production of fourteen L2 learners, ten non-learners and six native speakers. Participants recorded twenty-three sentences of Japanese. Acoustic data was analyzed for speech rate and fundamental frequency (F0). Results showed that experience is positively correlated with speech rate and not correlated with deviation from the Japanese mean intonation contour.

Avatime Noun Classes, Ronny C. Watkins May 2010

Avatime Noun Classes, Ronny C. Watkins

Linguistics Honors Projects

Like many African languages, particularly Bantu languages, the Ghanaian language of Avatime organizes its nouns into a class system. Noun classes use affixes to indicate semantic category. For example, many languages with noun classes have a class for ‘people’ nouns, such as ‘child’ and ‘stranger.’ Previous research on Avatime has postulated between seven and nine classes. The current study is based on original field work done in the village of Vane in Ghana. The new data show that Avatime has seven noun classes, distinguished by singular and plural prefixes, definite article suffixes, and semantic similarities.

We believe that by combining information about subjectivity in texts and authorship, the performance of both tasks can be improved. In the paper a personalized approach to opinion mining is presented, in which the notions of personal sense and idiolect are introduced and used for polarity classification task. The results of applying the personalized approach to opinion mining are presented, confirming that the approach increases the performance of the opinion mining task. Automatic authorship attribution is further applied to …

Sources Of Non-Conformity In Phonology: Variation And Exceptionality In Modern Hebrew Spirantization (Dissertation), Michal Temkin Martinez May 2010

Sources Of Non-Conformity In Phonology: Variation And Exceptionality In Modern Hebrew Spirantization (Dissertation), Michal Temkin Martinez

Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab

This dissertation investigates the integration of two sources of non-conformity – exceptionality and variation – in a single phonological system. Exceptionality manifests itself as systematic non-conformity, and variation as partial or variable non-conformity. When both occur within the same phenomenon, this is particularly challenging for the linguistic system. Modern Hebrew spirantization provides an apt case study for the investigation of the interaction of these two sources of non-conformity where exceptional (non-alternating) segments are frequent, and variation in alternating segments has been reported (Adam 2002). This dissertation makes contributions in the forms of both data and analysis. Its goals are to …
