Insider Perspective: Attitude And Motivational Orientation Among Heritage Learners Of Japanese At Colleges In The Philadelphia-Area, Miki Gilmore

This study investigates the attitudes and motivational orientations of heritage learners of Japanese. Twenty-seven students enrolled in Japanese classes in colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area participated in this study. Participants fell into two categories: heritage learners (N=6) and foreign language learners (N=21). Data was collected through an online questionnaire consisting of both quantitative and qualitative sections. Descriptive statistics were used to determine participants’ attitudes toward Japanese language, people, and culture and primary motivational orientations toward learning Japanese. The Fisher’s exact test was used to determine the effect of heritage status on attitude and motivational orientation. Results show both …

In DVM the most marked meaning of a word is identified by socio-cultural factors. The most marked value of linguistic units has a psychological reality not only for the listener, but also for the speaker. When expressing intentions the speaker chooses words that are the most marked to express his intention.

In this article the degree of potential unity of a wordform syntactic model (/WF/) in all types of sentences has been defined; it has been proven that the valency potential of /WҒ/ which has been formed as a result of mutual influence of the semantic valency of SSG(semantic-syntactic groups) belonging to /W/ and /Ғ/ garammatic valency can establish the contents of a semantic structure and its status in the sentence.

They were asked to produce two final products: one academic paper, and one public-facing product. The paper followed the norms of a standard academic paper. Wie spiegelt die Literatur das Phänomen der Zeit wieder? Auf welche Weise gelingt es den Erzählungen, Zeit einzufangen und einen Hauch von Realität wiederzugeben? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich das vorliegende Paper. Es untersucht die speziellen Begebenheiten und Affordances der deutschen Gegenwartsliteratur und betrachtet ins Besondere die Methode der Wirklichkeitsmontage. Untersucht wird dabei Alexander Kluges Kurzgeschichtensammlung Dezember, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Gerhard Richter entstanden ist und Erzählungen aus verschiedensten Jahrhunderten enthält.

Interactional Relevance Of Linguistic Categories: Epistemic Modals Daroo And Deshoo In Japanese Conversation, Michiko Kaneyasu

The present study investigates the locally situated interactional functions of so-called epistemic modals, daroo and deshoo, in Japanese conversation. Although the two forms are generally considered plain and polite variants of the same epistemic modal, both forms frequently appear in the present casual conversational data. A detailed sequential analysis demonstrates that daroo and deshoo are used to perform various social actions rather than simply expressing the speaker’s conjecture. Deshoo has a rather fixed function of soliciting alignment or confirmation from the interlocutor. This study investigates native Japanese speakers’ context-dependent linguistic knowledge of cooking recipes. Recipes are a typical example of a register, defined as the use of language in a particular social situation for a specific purpose. Thirty participants in the present study were asked to write a recipe for curry rice (a popular dish in Japan) or an unnamed soup (shown in a photo) on a blank piece of paper without access to any resources. Most participants’ texts contained specialized vocabulary and basic procedural organization. On the other hand, few integrated the typical grammatical features of commercial recipes. For more than 50 years, the field of linguistics has recognized the equality of human languages, including all dialects of all languages. In this study we examine how current popular public speaking textbooks handle issues of linguistic variation in English. We looked specifically at textbook discussions of accent, grammar and pronunciation. Unfortunately, we have found the majority of textbooks we examined serve to maintain the outdated “deficit” model of language variation, to the detriment of students.

Applying A Newly Learned Second Language Dimension To The Unknown: The Influence Of Second Language Mandarin Tones On The Naïve Perception Of Thai Tones, Vance Schaefer, Isabelle Darcy

This study investigates whether L2 Mandarin learners can generalize experience with Mandarin tones to unfamiliar tones (i.e., Thai). Three language groups-L1 English/L2 Mandarin learners (n=18), L1 Mandarin speakers (n=30), L1 monolingual English speakers (n=23)-were tested on the perception of unfamiliar Thai tones on ABX tasks. L2 Mandarin learners and L1 Mandarin speakers perceived Thai tones more accurately than L1 English non-learners. Mandarin learners L1 speakers showed priming on Mandarin tones on a lexical decision task with repetition priming, suggesting L2 tones had been encoded within lexical representations of L2 Mandarin words. Responding to the call to build teacher interculturality in more dynamic ways, this paper analyzes developmental trajectories of three pre‐service teachers enrolled in a course on language and culture in a master’s in second language teaching program at a U.S. university. From a sociocultural theory perspective, the article illustrates the various ways in which the pre‐service teachers incorporated (or not) the mediational means available to them. The article findings support the claim about the sociocultural nature of human learning, while the analysis informed by a sociocultural perspective on learning explicates why intercultural learning can be more enriching for some participating …

As renewed interest in the maintenance of regional minority languages grew in the second half of the 20th-century states' reactions to this call for linguistic rights, have informed the level of conflict seen with various linguistic minorities. Language and its use in classrooms has a significant impact on student motivation and self-perception (Delpit, 1988; Lei, 2009). Even more curious and significant is the motivation of teachers that intentionally use culturally-specific language and affectations, also known as code-switching, as an instructional device. This dissertation will examine the use of code-switching by African-American or Black teachers in urban, non-White classrooms. The problem undertaken here is to account for the relational placement in English of words traditionally known as adjectives and nouns. Two distinct orders are examined as signals of discrete meanings: one where the characterizing word is preposed to the characterized word, as in long hair, and the other where it is postposed, as in hair long. Distribution of the two signals in attested text is accounted for under the hypothesis that an Assertion of Characterization is made WEAKER or STRONGER, respectively, through this word order. In recent years, novel machine learning methods have been developed which are very good at extracting semantic relationships from large numbers of documents.
