بصمة المترجم الذاتية انعكاس لشخصيته, Nabiha Maktabi, May Hobeika Haddad

Al-Kīmiyā

This article explores the translator’s personality and its effect on the translation process which may be evident through the personal imprints he/she leaves on the text. Therefore, this subjective factor may affect his/her work and could appear through many personal characteristics that distinguish each translator from his/her peers, such as creativity and intuition. It also points out that it is difficult, or even impossible, for the translator to remain neutral. The article presents a small-scale empirical study that sought to establish a relationship between the types of participants’ personalities and the quality of their translation of one genre of text …

The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn Jan 2021

The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn

Al-Kīmiyā

Language is a system of signifiers, and of the concepts signified by them; concepts which, as de Saussure has shown, are delineated by the relations between the semiotic signs which constitute language. Thus, understood as a system of concepts, then as Wittgenstein, Quine and Derrida et al. recognized, language delineates the thoughts and understanding which it constitutes. Moreover, insofar as Hermeneutic Phenomenologists such as Heidegger recognized, and as cognitive psychologists such as Ames, and the Gestaltists, have demonstrated, our concepts mediate even our most basic perceptions, then language mediates, and thus delineates, our very experiences of the world also.

Dom Juan « Travestito », Sanguineti Traducteur Et Le Déguisement D’Un Classique, Ludovica Maggi

Al-Kīmiyā

In this article, Edoardo Sanguineti’s translation of Molière’s Dom Juan serves as a case study for a reflection on the transformative action of translation, based on the interaction of three categories: hermeneutics, temporality and orality. More precisely, the translator’s interpretative horizon – here, specifically, his vision of theatre, translation and the classic – is presented as the source of a transformative handling of orality in translation. Sanguineti’s translative orality is described as disrupted and alienating. Paratext reveals the following influencing factors: a militant function attributed to language, a performative conception of scenic language, a theoretical approach to translation based on …

Traductologie Morale : Nouveau Champ Au Sein De La Traductologie Et Notions Y Rattachées, Rhéa Hleihel

Al-Kīmiyā

In the context of the positive conditioning of the translator in conflict zones and the development of moral neuroscience, this article explains the generation of morality in the human brain and its ties with the imagination and the imaginary. Since moral dilemmas present often inconceivable and unrealistic situations, it is assumed that the reflection that these dilemmas generate, combined with practical application in the field, contributes to the moral and intellectual development of translators in conflict zones and broader areas of translation. This article first introduces the notion of the imaginary in the resolution of problems faced by these translators, …

L’Empathie : Une Composante Émotionnelle Impérative En Sous-Titrage, Mélissa Mouzannar, Gina Abou Fadel Saad

Al-Kīmiyā

The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.

The Roles And Functions Of Metaphors In The Malaysian Education Blueprint, Linggatharani Kesavan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Abstract: The Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013 - 2025) seeks to revamp the entire education system in Malaysia, targeting institutions of learning and the stakeholders via a series of radical changes in policy and governance. Upon scrutiny, it was also found to contain several metaphors that are carefully constructed and layered to deliver the contents to the readers. Metaphors have been identified as an effective linguistic tool that can be used to achieve cognitive, semantic and pragmatic goals effectively. More importantly, they are also found to create or alter realities and evoke powerful emotions. This research applies the Conceptual Metaphor Theory …

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos Jan 2021

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

World Languages & Cultures Department Publications

This sociolinguistic study examines the non-vibrant rhotic realizations produced in a bilingual Spanish variety spoken by Creole-Spanish speakers in the Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia. These bilingual rhotic realizations were compared with the languages in contact, the monolingual varieties, Spanish and Creole, in terms of the best acoustic predictors for discriminating between linguistic groups. A discriminant function analysis selected segmental duration and formant frequencies (F3 and F2) as the acoustic correlates with the best predicting capabilities. These acoustic predictors extracted from zero-occlusion rhotics were further contrasted between varieties revealing that the bilingual Spanish is placed in an intermediate position between …

Defining Bimodal Bilingualism Within The Field Of Speech-Language Pathology, Jaycie Strunk

2021 Honors Symposium

BACKGROUND
• Speech-language pathologists work with a variety of individuals that each uniquely have their own journey in learning and using language for communication. Many times, professionals are working with those with hearing loss, who are diverse in their use of communication.
• 14.9% of children in between the ages of 6-19 years suffer from hearing loss (Niskar, 1998). This is a large group of individuals that speech-language pathologists serve, each with different goals and needs.
• According to the CDC, around 90% of children born with a congenital hearing loss are born to parents who are not deaf, which …

The Semantic And Acoustic Voice Features Differentiating Neutral And Traumatic Narratives, Yosef Shimon Amrami Jan 2021

The Semantic And Acoustic Voice Features Differentiating Neutral And Traumatic Narratives, Yosef Shimon Amrami

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a quantitative and qualitative exploration of how one linguistically communicates emotions through an autobiographical narrative. Psycholinguistic research has affirmed that linguistic features of a narrative, including semantic and acoustic features, indicate a narrator’s emotions and physiological. This study investigated whether these linguistic features could help differentiate between trauma and neutral narratives and if they can predict autobiographical narratives’ subjective trauma ratings (STR). Qualitative analyses of the positive and negative evaluative statements were also conducted, which indicated the narrators’ thought processes during recall. Twenty-two Spanish-English college students participated in this study and narrated both traumatic and neutral narratives. …

Theory And Practice: Phonological Awareness Instructional Methods Used In Deaf Education, Mary Cantino Jan 2021

Theory And Practice: Phonological Awareness Instructional Methods Used In Deaf Education, Mary Cantino

Theses and Dissertations

An inequality in literacy rates exists between deaf children and their hearing peers. Research indicates that visual phonic interventions such as Visual Phonics used alongside a phonics program enhances grapheme-phoneme correspondence. That practice in turn improves overall literacy achievement. However, as rates deaf literacy continue to lag ongoing research indicates that teachers may be ill prepared to use research-based interventions. This study seeks to identify the frequency of teacher implementation of Visual Phonics interventions as well as their exposure to these interventions via teacher education and professional development. This study will investigate if the presence of these elements by using …

Theses and Dissertations

The novel COVID-19 pandemic has caused a rupture in the trajectory of education worldwide. Students, families and schools are experiencing unprecedented times and are navigating uncharted territory together in how we educate our students. In the U.S., it has been noted that the schism within education as a result of the pandemic is the biggest threat to national security (Choi, 2020), noting the importance of education within our democracy. This includes the trauma experienced by families due to deaths caused by the pandemic, the disproportionality of communities of color losing a parent (Brundage & Ramos-Callan, 2020), and the impact on …

Investigating Special Education Services For Elementary English Language Learners Within The South-Central U.S.: A Survey Of General Education, Special Education, And Esl Teachers, Kylie Bray

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper explores solutions to the issue of overrepresentation in special education among the English Language Learner (ELL) population. Reasons for overrepresentation of this population can be summarized into three main categories: diagnostic problems, TESOL shortages, and improper assessment tools. By educating future and current teachers on proper ways and techniques to teach, academic failure among ELL students is prevented. Assessment forms need to be revised and accountability needs to exist to ensure that poor teaching and learning environments are not being diagnosed as a disability. An attempt to find how effectively these solutions have been implemented into schools, overrepresentation …

The Communicative Function Of Gender In Italian, Joseph C. M. Davis Jan 2021

The Communicative Function Of Gender In Italian, Joseph C. M. Davis

Publications and Research

An analysis of gender in modern literary Italianbased on attested examples from various genres. The evidence-based hypothesis, thoroughly noncanonical, proposes a system of morphologically signaled meanings, and these are not the traditional categories “feminine” and “masculine.” Even the familiar and misleading term “gender” is replaced. The analysis concerns primarily what is typically called “grammatical gender,” although it stands to inform too the use of Italian in communication having to do with human cultural gender. The analysis concerns primarily what is called here “variable gender” (essentially, adjectives) although it stands to inform too the problem of “invariable gender” (essentially, nouns).

Language Contact And Covert Prominence In The Sḥerēt-Jibbāli Language Of Oman, Jarred Brewster Jan 2021

Language Contact And Covert Prominence In The Sḥerēt-Jibbāli Language Of Oman, Jarred Brewster

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This thesis reports on a phonetic production study, the results of which support the existence of a complex word-prosodic system for the Sḥerēt-Jibbāli language of Dhofar, Oman. In the language, stress seems to co-occur in some lexical items with a high tone. In the discussion, a mechanism for the emergence of this system is proposed as the reflex of a typological feature held in common with the related language, Soqotri, and as justification for an Eastern Modern South Arabian subgroup consisting of Sḥerēt-Jibbāli and Soqotri.

Revised: Etymology Of “Ragtime”: Role Of “Tag, Rag, And “Bobtail” (The Rabble) And The 19th Century “Fancy Rag Balls”, Fred Hoeptner

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

Despite abundant speculation about the etymology of “rag” in “ragtime” since the emergence of ragtime music into popular consciousness in 1896, a convincing solution has remained elusive. As OED3 sums up the situation (rag, n. meaning #5): “Origin uncertain and disputed.”

But at least some new insight may now be possible. The present study is the first to use digitized newspaper archives to track “rag” and “ragtime” from their sources to full maturity, and the following picture emerges:

  1. The starting point is tag, rag, and bobtail “the common herd, the rabble”; the word appears in OED3 under bob-tail.
  2. Rag as …
