Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy C. Schindler

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. Freshmen's Use Of Library Electronic Resources And Self-Efficacy, Michael Waldman Jan 2003

Freshmen's Use Of Library Electronic Resources And Self-Efficacy, Michael Waldman

Publications and Research

To encourage students' use of the library, and in particular of its electronic resources, we need to understand what factors encourage students to seek out information in the library setting. Research has shown that self-efficacy influences academic achievement. This paper looks at the role self-efficacy plays in their search for information and use of the library's electronic resources, by surveying a class of freshmen at Baruch College. Their library and computer use were analyzed and correlated with their self-efficacy scores. Through statistical analysis, we found that use of the library correlated to the students' use of the library's electronic resources. …

Slow Fires Still Burn: Results Of A Preservation Assessment Of Libraries In L’Viv, Ukraine, And Sofia, Bulgaria, Brian J. Baird, Bradley L. Schaffner

Staff and Faculty Work

East Central European libraries face a serious threat of the potential disintegration of the vast majority of Slavic publications printed in the twentieth century. This loss will come as result of the combination of inferior materials used to produce most twentieth-century Slavic publications and inadequate facilities to house these collections. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the condition of Slavic publications, over the past two years, the authors have conducted collection condition surveys and reviewed the preservation operations of three major academic libraries in L’viv, Ukraine, and Sofia, Bulgaria. This paper presents the results of these surveys.

Harper & Brothers’ Family And School District Libraries, 1830-1846., Robert S. Freeman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

In the 1830s, at the dawn of mass-market publishing, J. & J. Harper of New York began publishing several libraries, including Harper’s Family Library and Harper’s School District Library. A “library” in this sense is a series or set of uniformly bound and uniformly priced books issued by the same publisher. A leading publisher and a major force in the broad religious and social reform movements of the period, the Harper brothers helped to shape education in American homes and schools. As Methodists they were advocates of reading for moral improvement. As innovative publishers, they made full use of the …

SCL Faculty and Staff Book Gallery

Bowling Green in Vintage Postcards is an engaging collection designed to entertain, educate, and enthrall history buffs, residents, and visitors alike with scenes of Bowling Green of yesterday. Today, the city is hailed as the educational, retail, and commercial hub of South Central Kentucky. Preserved in this photo journal is the area’s rich and vibrant past. Showcased are things unique to the region—horses, tobacco, strawberries, building stone, Corvettes, and Western Kentucky …

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd Mar 2002

"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd

Faculty Publications

Public librarians have long debated the question of whether quality or popularity should drive collection decisions. A survey of the selected holdings of twenty medium-sized public libraries indicates that both quality and popularity may be determining factors in whether to acquire particular titles. Furthermore, the study suggests that the existence and content of reviews may also influence the likelihood of libraries to select particular titles, as may the selectors' perception of the diversity of their community.

Documenting Diversity: Developing Special Collections Of Underdocumented Groups, Brian Keough Jan 2002

Documenting Diversity: Developing Special Collections Of Underdocumented Groups, Brian Keough

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the theoretical and practical developments in documentation planning for acquiring archival manuscript material of under-documented topics. The author examines the emergence of documentation planning theory in the 1970s and 1980s as a response to historians’ and archivists’ calls regarding the lack of historical records related to racial and ethnic groups, women, the working class, and the lives of ordinary people. Heeding this call, archivists initiated programs to assist repositories in identifying and selecting materials that present a more balanced historical record. The author concludes by assessing one repository’s experience with collecting records on underdocumented topics and suggesting …

Inventory At Brooklyn College, 1998–1999: An Original Method, Judith Wild

Publications and Research

This article discusses the development of an inventory project at Brooklyn College that entailed examining the collection and comparing it to the corresponding records in the online catalog. The procedure became necessary in large part due to problems resulting from the migration to a new, integrated cataloging system in 1987. We needed to deal with (a) books in the catalog that were not on the shelves, (b) books on the shelves that were not in the catalog, and (c) books that lacked circulation information (item records). We used the circulation module of our integrated system to discharge every book, thereby …

Journal Selections: Let’S Support Our Students’ Futures, Eva Stowers, Lesley J. Johnson, Susan L. Meacham

Library Faculty Research

Dietetic educators concur that use of professional journals in the undergraduate curriculum promotes student reading skills, exposes students to current research, enhances computer skills and prepares dietetic students for the real world environment. Those of us in educational institutions are continually asked to review our university library holdings; prioritizing on the basis of department selections, cost, rate of inflation, use by faculty and students and availability through interlibrary loans and other document retrieval procedures. No doubt, those in industry and clinical and private practice are also watching their budgets and are asked to review expenses for professional publications.
