In this study, researchers observed the impact of various promotional materials, such as print flyers, social media, email, and other web platforms, to market three electronic resources at a mid-sized, urban, commuter college academic library. Links to article databases were shortened and then tracked through a link shortening tool, which were observed over a two month period. The results created a data-driven picture of users’ promotional preferences, highlighting strengths, areas for improvement, and best practices in marketing e-resources. All too often, the internal organization of collection development departments are ignored. Perhaps inadvertently, more pressing issues of budgets, resource renewals, and vendor negotiations divert our attention; yet at the same time, the completion of these initiatives require capable and efficient faculty and staff. Burnout, now classified by the World Health Organization as a “syndrome conceptualized resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” (WHO, 2019) is appropriate to juxtapose against the organization of collection development departments. In August 2018, the University Archives and Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato decided to migrate our finding aids and collection information from a hidden ARCHON database to a publicly available ArchivesSpace instance. This time sensitive decision was made with no budget available and in the midst of both a library system migration (Aleph to Alma/Primo) and an entire University website migration that affected us more than we initially thought. In the summer of 2016 two Hunter College librarians, working with a colleague in the Republic of Armenia, conducted an IRB-approved focus group at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia. This group drew participants from the libraries and other academic departments of the American University of Armenia as well as Yerevan State University, a large public institution. Data visualizations help librarians see through the clutter of collection analysis metrics, and can be very useful for outreach to academic partners. Automating the production of data visualizations in Jupyter Notebook from standardized data inputs enables us to produce more reports for more academic departments, which increases our impact.

The postcards came from all corners of the wide, wide world, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. IMSA students and alumni/ae sent them with pictures of places they were visiting to Dr. Nokkentved, who added them to his collection (now in the Archives). This exhibit is a smaller version of “IMSA and the Wide, Wide World” from 2015 (See the description for the exhibit “IMSA and the Wide, Wide World” below).

Purpose – As library budgets continue to constrict, librarians will need to become more familiar with comparing database host platforms. This paper aims to compare Inspec on Elsevier’s Engineering Village (EV) and Clarivate’s Web of Science (WOS) from a novice user experience. The main objectives are to identify some R1 institutions that subscribe to Inspec and highlight some of the key differences between the two platforms. Systemwide or multi-campus licenses provide many benefits such as favorable pricing, access to an expanded array of resources for all participants, and streamlined licensing. They also usually involve cost sharing among participating campuses. The licensing process can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. Successful collaboration among participants is essential in reaching consensus. In the past, the University of California (UC) libraries employed many cost models, and the California Digital Library (CDL) applied them for CDL-licensed subscriptions, both new licenses and renewals. Scraping Bepress: Downloading Dissertations For Preservation, Stephen Zweibel

This article will describe our process developing a script to automate downloading of documents and secondary materials from our library’s BePress repository. Our objective was to collect the full archive of dissertations and associated files from our repository into a local disk for potential future applications and to build out a preservation system.

Unlike at some institutions, our students submit directly into BePress, so we did not have a separate repository of the files; and the backup of BePress content that we had access to was not in an ideal format (for example, it included “withdrawn” items and did not …

Citation Analysis Of Mathematics And Statistics Dissertations And Theses From The University At Albany, Kathleen H. Flynn

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This study analyzed dissertations and theses completed from 2009-2019 in the Mathematics and Statistics department at the University at Albany to investigate resource type, citation age, publishers, and journal title dispersion. Students cited journal articles 57.0% of the time, while books and book chapters combined accounted for 30.5% of the citations. Publisher usage fit the Pareto Distribution; however, there was a high journal title dispersion. Preprints represented 4.6% of the citations, an increase from previous studies. The amount of graduate student citation quality issues and preprint citations shows a need for instruction and discussions in these areas.
