Better Together? Effects Of Dyadic Collaboration On Intertemporal Preference, Emily Edgington

Abstract

Intertemporal choices have been researched extensively in the context of individual choices. However, empirical evidence is absent regarding intertemporal preferences when two individuals collaborate on a choice task. This study aimed to compare the rates of discounting under the condition of dyadic collaboration and individual decisions. Furthermore, this study examined the collaboration sessions in an online video conferencing platform. Results showed a strong, positive correlation between average individual discounting rates and corresponding dyad rates of discounting. The findings of this study should be considered when making intertemporal decisions.

The pandemic in 2019-2021, induced by the spread of Covid-19 influenced global economic downturns and had significant effects on the United States labor force. The recession and pandemic disproportionately affected women’s labor causing higher unemployment and lower labor force participation for women relative to men in the U.S. throughout 2020. These effects were influenced by occupational choices, income decisions, parental status and social norms. This paper will show that women’s tendency to work in service-related occupations prompted massive losses in employment when social distancing recommendation and mandates were enforced by state and local governments. Introduction: West Virginia is a state in which most counties are rural, as well as a state with multiple health disparities among its population. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of sleep duration and falls for non-institutionalized West Virginia adults, aged 40 years and above, using the National Sleep Foundation’s definition of “may be appropriate” and “not recommended” sleep durations for specific ages.

This study examines the impact of economics education on student performance on the Educational Testing Service Major Field Test in Business. We demonstrate that grades in introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics courses have a positive relationship with overall exam performance as well as sub-scores in most content areas of the test. Furthermore, we use a measure of “extranormal” ability in economics and demonstrate its positive relationship to test performance. “Extranormal” ability represents the portion of course grades that cannot be explained by prior academic achievement. During the British rule, India was engulfed by multiple devastating famines. Over the past, scholars have presented varied opinions on the cause of Famine. Here, we seek to understand the British economic policies and their effects. Our analysis is focused on examining the taxation system, export/import policies, and crop production. We find that the interest of the British aligned with the extractive colonial strategy. The imposed institutions fostered higher tax collection and strict implementation of the free-trade system. Moreover, their primary goal was aimed at preserving trade and commerce than alleviating the distress of the native population.

The DOJ/ FTC Vertical Merger Guidelines (VMGs) were adopted by the FTC in June 2020 by a party-line 3-2 party line over the dissent of the Acting Chair. One might expect that the VMGs will be withdrawn and/or revised, now that there is a Democratic majority. Revision is appropriate because the VMGs are both incomplete and overly permissible. This project centers on the topic of rental housing affordability for southern metropolitan areas in the United States. In an attempt to understand how rents have changed in relation to incomes in cities throughout the American south, this study uses IPUMS data to compare changes in the distributions of rents and incomes from 2000 to 2019 for each of the geographies in question. Wage Theft, Economic Conditions, And Market Power: The Case Of H-1b Workers, Peter Norlander, Jed Devaro

This study explores what determines employers’ violations of the wage contracts of workers on H-1B temporary work visas, which occur when firms pay those workers below the promised prevailing or “market” wage. A theoretical framework is proposed that predicts more violations during economic downturns, fewer violations when firms have more labor-market power, and more violations by subcontractor firms. Empirical analysis is based on a firm-level matched dataset of wage and hour violations and the firms that sponsor H-1Bs. Higher labor market power, measured by the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, is associated with fewer violations. Higher unemployment rates and subcontractor firms are associated …

This project studies the journeys of English-speaking Afro-Caribbeans who immigrated to the US for economic reasons between the 1980s-present day. While some researchers emphasize the success of West Indian immigrants, others highlight the issue of downward assimilation many face upon arrival in the US. Demand Shock Along The Supply Chain: The Bullwhip Effect Of Covid-19 In Chinese Exports, Kaichong Zhang

This study investigates the bullwhip effect of Covid-19 on global supply chains from the Chinese perspective. The bullwhip effect refers to the amplification of demand shock along the supply chain, and my baseline estimates show that a $1\%$ increase in foreign new cases (a proxy for foreign demand shock) reduces exports of downstream products and that of upstream industries by $2.1\%$ and $4.5\%$ respectively. The estimates also suggest that whether industries are concentrated or not generates ambiguous effects on exports that vary from different empirical specifications. Clifton (2010, 2015) recommends entrepreneurship, better business models, and new business startups as a solution for economic renewal in the United States and specifically identifies disengaged workers and low-energy workplaces as the starting point. The recommendation does not address how to make workplaces conducive to entrepreneurial activity, nor does the recommendation address how to engage entrepreneurial employees.

Purpose: It is well known that micromanagement -- excessive control of employees -- is detrimental to the employees' morale and thus, decreases their productivity. But what if the managers keep people happy -- will there still be negative consequences of micromanagement? This is the problem analyzed in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach: To analyze our problem, we use general -- but simplified -- mathematical models of how productivity depends on the working rate.

This study employs pseudo-panel fixed-effects approach to estimate the returns to field of study in Turkey. Repeated cross sections of Turkish Labor Force Surveys between 2016-2019 are used. Year of birth and region are used as grouping variables. The results indicate significant earnings differences across field of study when cohort-fixed effects are controlled. Relative to the base field, Education Sciences, there are higher returns to Environmental Sciences & Mathematics & Statistics and Engineering & Manufacturing & Architecture and Health & Welfare. This paper revisits Okun’s law under an asymmetric approach for Turkey applying structural threshold regression model that allows for endogeneity of the threshold variable that separates the dataset into low and high regime periods according to economic growth. Moreover, the theory is investigated taking subcategories of unemployment rate into account, such as age, education and gender. Empirical findings suggest that only the overall unemployment rate and female unemployment rate reflect significantly negative impacts in both periods.
