Entrepreneurship And Economic Development: A Critique Of The Theory, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann Mar 1972

Entrepreneurship And Economic Development: A Critique Of The Theory, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This thesis is a criticism of the "entrepreneurial school" of economic development, which contends that a major cause of underdevelopment in the Third World is the poor "entrepreneurial spirit" in these areas. The entrepreneurial spirit consists of certain values and behaviour which it is presumed existed in the West at the time of its development. To test the validity of this theory empirical evidence on entrepreneurs is examined; this evidence includes historical data on the West, especially the United States and France, and twenty-one area studies of entrepreneurs in the Third World. The evidence suggests that there is little difference …

KWRRI Research Reports

The institutions responsible for water resources management in the United States have originated as political responses to major social issues. Each agency institutionalized a procedure for structuring and comparing alternatives in the formulation of its total program. Each agency originally sought to promote effective resolution of its social issue (flood control, development of arid lands, soil erosion, etc.), but more recent efforts have sought better coordination among agency practices through a common procedure largely derived from economic theory. Any procedure, however, varies in application with the interpretation and judgment of individual planners. Today, public pressures have brought political directives requiring …

A Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions. Part Iv. Fiat Money And Noncooperative Equilibrium In A Closed Economy, Martin Shubik Feb 1972

A Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions. Part Iv. Fiat Money And Noncooperative Equilibrium In A Closed Economy, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Fiat money is a type of paper or symbol with which any individual may buy most things by law. It has virtually no intrinsic value but immediately assumes a trading value when its shortage can prevent trades that would have been deemed profitable in a nonmonetary competitive equilibrium system. This paper sketches an approach to a theory of fiat money by investigating the properties of a noncooperative dynamic trading games embedded within a closed economic system. Among the conclusions are that inflation and deflation are not symmetric, and that it is not possible to define a noncooperative game involving borrowing …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell Feb 1972

A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell

Graduate Thesis Collection

Each state or region within the United States has certain unique and distinct characteristics that cause its economic performance to vary from that of the nation as a whole. Unemployment rates, as summary measures of unutilized manpower resources, frequently serve as a gauge of the general economic situation and social well-being. It is a well documented fact that unemployment is not evenly distributed througout the nation. For example, although 54% of the labor force is concetrated in the northeast and north central regions, they only account for 46% of the unemployment in recent years. This thesis focuses on the measurement …

W. S. U'Ren And The Fight For Government Reform And The Single Tax: 1908-1912, David Elvin Lindstrom Jan 1972

W. S. U'Ren And The Fight For Government Reform And The Single Tax: 1908-1912, David Elvin Lindstrom

Dissertations and Theses

In the study of Oregon politics, the importance of developments in the early twentieth century have been largely overlooked by popular historians. As a result, many have lost the perspective of the sweeping reforms that reformers presented to Oregon's electorate. Another complicating factor is that voters dealing with the issues during the period had such disparaging attitudes towards some of the reforms, that no thought was given to preserving their memory for future generations. In addition, the personal papers of W. S. U'Ren, Oregon's leading reformer, are not available. This makes perspective even more difficult. Therefore, the research problem is …
