A History Of The Involvement Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Tanning Industry In Utah From 1847 To 1973, Paul Edwards Damron Jan 1973

A History Of The Involvement Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Tanning Industry In Utah From 1847 To 1973, Paul Edwards Damron

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports the extent of the tanning industry in Utah from 1847 to 1973 and explains the relationship of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with this industry.

The tanning industry was essential to the survival of the pioneer communities in Utah until the coming of the railroad in 1869. Two important factors affecting this industry were external competition and Church support. In fact, the industry survived eastern competition because it was Church-supported. However, all Church support ended in the early 1900's, and except for a few businesses which soon ceased operation, the tanning industry in Utah …

Railroads And Urban Rivalries In Antebellum Eastern Virginia, Peter C. Stewart Jan 1973

Railroads And Urban Rivalries In Antebellum Eastern Virginia, Peter C. Stewart

History Faculty Publications

Railroad construction provided a focus for the acceleration of economic rivalry between Richmond, Petersburg, and Norfolk from the 1830's through the 1850's. Richmond's place as a political center provided legislative leverage and attracted able promoters and sufficient capital. Richmond outdistanced its rivals handily, with Petersburg gaining little more than Norfolk. The rivalry left an enduring legacy. Based on railroad archives, manuscripts, and newspapers; 60 notes.

The Allocation Of Effort Under Uncertainty: The Case Of Risk Averse Behavior, John Heineke, M. K. Block Jan 1973

The Allocation Of Effort Under Uncertainty: The Case Of Risk Averse Behavior, John Heineke, M. K. Block

Economics

This paper analyzes the labor supply decision of a single economic agent within the expected utility framework. Two formulations of the problem are considered: pure income uncertainty and wage rate uncertainty. In each case, the effects on the labor supply decision of changes in both expected returns and the dispersion of returns (about a constant mean) are investigated. Arguments concerning the "disincentive effects" of uncertainty are shown not to be unambiguously supported by theory.

The Supply Of Legal And Illegal Activity: A Choice Theoretic Analysis, John Heineke, M. K. Block Jan 1973

The Supply Of Legal And Illegal Activity: A Choice Theoretic Analysis, John Heineke, M. K. Block

Economics

We will show below that failure to fully specify the choice problem and therefore the transformation between what is inherently a multi-attribute decision problem and the wealth only problem has led Becker, Ehrlich, and Sjoquist to conclusions which are valid only in very special cases. In general, we show that plausible preference restrictions are not sufficient to generate unambiguous supply results, a result that should come as no surprise since it is the same situation that confronts the investigator in most household allocation problems. Therefore, policy prescriptions in this area, as in the tax incentive area do not follow from …

Money And The Decentralization Of Exchange, Joseph M. Ostroy, Ross M. Starr Jan 1973

Money And The Decentralization Of Exchange, Joseph M. Ostroy, Ross M. Starr

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A pairwise trading process is formulated subject to conditions of nonnegativity of traders’ holdings and quid pro quo. It is shown that that: (i) There is a centralized procedure that achieves the equilibrium allocation for an arbitrary economy. (ii) It is not in general possible to find a decentralized procedure that achieves the equilibrium allocation for an arbitrary economy. (iii) In a monetary economy there is a decentralized procedure that achieves the equilibrium allocation. The usefulness of money is that it allows decentralization of the trading process.

Fiscal Federalism: Program Budgeting And The Multilevel Governmental Setting, F. Gregory Hayden Jan 1973

Fiscal Federalism: Program Budgeting And The Multilevel Governmental Setting, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to determine what theoretical and policy conclusions are consistent with the orthodox theory of social and merit wants, the treatment of distribution as a component of efficiency, and a Planning-Programming-Budgeting System when they are placed in a federalist setting with states’ rights and local autonomy. The conclusion is that neither matching nor equalization grants should be used in intergovernmental fiscal relations and that use of traditional intergovernmental fiscal devices will not assure success of a programmed budget.

The Economic Development Of Moab, Utah, Gary W. Booher Jan 1973

The Economic Development Of Moab, Utah, Gary W. Booher

Theses and Dissertations

Moab, located in southeastern Utah, began as an agricultural village, in accordance with the economy of early Utah. However, Moab's growth was limited by a restricted physical site. The purpose of this study is to trace the development of the economic functions of Moab in relation to its resource base. Despite the physical limitations of the area, agriculture remained the chief economic activity up to the mid-twentieth century. Periodic booms in speculative mining were only temporary and not significant to the permant economy of the community.

However, in the 1950s, a spectacular uranium boom brought unprecedented growth to the town. …

Investment In Human Capital And The Nonwhite-White Unemployment Differential, Curtis Lloyd Gilroy Jan 1973

Investment In Human Capital And The Nonwhite-White Unemployment Differential, Curtis Lloyd Gilroy

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of the differential incidence of unemployment between white and nonwhite male workers in the U.S. labor force. The general question to which this study addresses itself is to what extent can the higher incidence of nonwhite compared to white unemployment at a point in time and over a period of time be explained by differences in certain characteristics of the respective labor forces.

To measure and compare the relative unemployment burdens of white and nonwhite workers, the unemployment differential will be investigated. The differential can be of two types: the relative differential, denoted by the ratio …

A Cash Flow Theory Of Conglomerate Mergers, Edward Barry Leviton Jan 1973

A Cash Flow Theory Of Conglomerate Mergers, Edward Barry Leviton

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

There have been three periods of intensive merger activity in the United States. The first merger movement of major significance occurred at the turn of the century, and its peak years were between 1898 and 1902. This early merger movement in many respects was the most significant of the merger waves. It saw the transformation of many industries, initially characterized by many small and medium sized firms, into those in which one or a few very large firms dominated. Nelson has said that in this period the pattern of concentration characteristic of twentieth-century American business was formed and matured. The …
