Publications (WR)

This study evaluates the socioeconomic impacts of the Second Stage of the Southern Nevada Water Project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation, comparing that project with the alternatives of importing water from Nevada areas somewhat removed from the Las Vegas Valley and of leaving the water supply of the Valley basically as it is, the no project alternative.

The study follows, with adaptations and extensions, the general methodology for socioeconomic impact studies as developed and still being evolved in successive socioeconomic analyses of Bureau of Reclamation water projects. An Investigation Into The Explanatory Capability Of Forecasting Models Of Recreational Demand, Jeffrey Donald Baxter Jul 1975

An Investigation Into The Explanatory Capability Of Forecasting Models Of Recreational Demand, Jeffrey Donald Baxter

Economics ETDs

The practical problems inherent in attempting to test a theory of individual recreational behavior scientifically with the use of aggregated data are investigated. Due to the typical high cost of obtaining data concerning individual, decision making units, readily available aggregated data are normally used. The primary thrust of this research is an examination of the adequacy of such aggregated data for scientifically testing hypotheses deducible from a theory of individual recreational choice. As the adequacy of data cannot be examined in isolation, a general theoretical model of individual recreational behavior is developed. It is demonstrated that the characteristics approach to …

New Mexico's Corporation Income Tax: Its Historical And Current Administration And A Methodology For Projecting Its Revenues, John Leroy Temple Jun 1975

New Mexico's Corporation Income Tax: Its Historical And Current Administration And A Methodology For Projecting Its Revenues, John Leroy Temple

Economics ETDs

The objectives of this study are two-fold: first, to illustrate and analyze comprehensively the historical and current principal administrative features of New Mexico's corporation income tax (CIT); and second, to derive a methodology for estimating the revenues from this tax. These objectives were established because there exists very little literature concerning the CIT used by New Mexico, and in response to the current difficulty experienced by the state's Bureau of Revenue (BOR) in obtaining relatively accurate revenue projections for this tax. The illustration of the administrative aspects of the CIT centers around five factors: 1) the tax rate, 2) the …

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards Jun 1975

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Few would deny that the U.S. economy is today dominated by huge corporations. Much recent writing has proposed that these corporations form a stable and monopolistic (or oligopolistic) "core" around which a more competitive "peripheral" sector exists. Firms in the core are said to be "eternal," while firms in the periphery demonstrate the mortality and high turnover expected in competitive industries. In another context, Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy emphasized the permanence of big corporations when they noted:

The real capitalist today is not the individual businessman but the corporation. .. . The giant corporation of today is an engine …

Private Pensions And The Free Market, John Louis Dobra May 1975

Private Pensions And The Free Market, John Louis Dobra

Dissertations and Theses

In light of the retirement phenomena, the development and utilization of private pensions may be viewed as a market response based on individual and collective recognition of the need to plan to finance retirement from the labor force. This market response however, is shown to have produced a profusion of independent differential pension schemes which may vary with respect to their administrative mechanisms, the type and adequacy of benefits paid, the level at which contributions are made to the plan by participants and the basis of these contributions, and the adequacy of funding. As a result, it is not only …

Testing The Accuracy Of Static Input-Output Analysis, Peter Earle Coughlin May 1975

Testing The Accuracy Of Static Input-Output Analysis, Peter Earle Coughlin

Economics ETDs

Three aspects of static input-output analysis were investigated: (1) the acceptability of its sectoral (65 order) accuracy in projecting changes in intermediate outputs when using the actual vector of final demands for the year concerned; (2) the advisability of extrapolating a continuation of the rate of change in technical coefficients where those shifts had been dramatic between 1947 and 1958; (3) the workability of a variant of a non-homogeneous linear system where the marginal coefficients were derived from the 1947 and 1958 tables.

It was found that in any given projected year about one-third of the sectoral projections had to …
