A Primer On Macroeconomics For South Dakotans, Philip Favero Nov 1979

A Primer On Macroeconomics For South Dakotans, Philip Favero

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

What is macroeconomics, you ask; and what does it mean to me? Macroeconomics is the study of aggregate economic conditions, such as a nation's employment, unemployment, and general price levels. Throughout history nations have experienced boom-to-bust cycles--times of employment and prosperity, followed by times of unemployment and hardship. Macroeconomics provides policy makers with ideas to promote economic stability - ways to combat the twin economic evils of unemployment and inflation.

The Dakota Proposition: An Economic Analysis, Philip Favero

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The Dakota Proposition, an initiated proposal to amend the South Dakota State Constitution, will appear on the 1980 ballot. The Proposition would seem to have far reaching implications. Yet, what are these implications? Will the Proposition be a boon to taxpayers, a calamity for government, or both? Three major provisions are included in the Proposition. These are: I. A reduction or rollback of taxes on real property to one percent of Full and True value, determined by assessments performed in 1977; 2. A ceiling of two percent annual growth in the Full and True value of real property for any …

Hot, Dry Rock Geothermal Energy In Electricity Production: An Application Of The Pure Theory Of Exhaustion, Rhonda Kay Hageman Oct 1979

Hot, Dry Rock Geothermal Energy In Electricity Production: An Application Of The Pure Theory Of Exhaustion, Rhonda Kay Hageman

Economics ETDs

Determination of an optimal course for alternative energy development involves not only an investigation of new technologies for exploiting non-conventional energy sources, but also an investigation of the economic viability of those new technologies in future energy markets. This thesis focuses on structuring and analyzing the workings of a representative model of the economic performance of one non-conventional source of energy: hot, dry rock (HOR) geothermal energy to be utilized in the production of electricity. The central theme stressed throughout the analysis is the importance of evaluating a very new energy technology such as HOR in a manner which is …

An Algorithm For Fiml And 3sls Estimation Of Large Nonlinear Models, William R. Parke Oct 1979

An Algorithm For Fiml And 3sls Estimation Of Large Nonlinear Models, William R. Parke

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper presents a numerical algorithm for computing full information maximum likelihood (FIML) and nonlinear three-stage least squares (3SLS) coefficient estimates for large nonlinear macroeconomic models. The new algorithm, which is demonstrated by actually computing FIML and 3SLS coefficient estimates for two versions of the 97 equation Fair Model, is substantially more effective than other algorithms on FIML and 3SLS estimation problems.

(Qvu) minimize {f(x) - uTx subject to g(x) < b + v} where f : Rn approaches R, g: Rn approaches Rm; f in C2, g in Cn; u in Rn, v in Rm; n > m; that at any local minimum point x of (Qvu) the Jacobian matrix of g at x has full rank, strict complementary slackness holds and the second order sufficiency conditions hold, for almost every matrix{u v} in Rn x Rm (Lebesgue measure). The purpose of this paper is to explicate the geometry underlying their work and to exploit this geometry in the generic analysis of constrained optimization problems. Namely we show that their work can be reduced to the study of minimizing a Morse function on a manifold with boundary. We follow …

A Total Budget Methodology For Analyzing Interdistrict Equity Of State Educational Finance Systems With An Application To Nebraska, F. Gregory Hayden Oct 1979

A Total Budget Methodology For Analyzing Interdistrict Equity Of State Educational Finance Systems With An Application To Nebraska, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

As in most states today, serious legislative concern is being given to elementary and secondary educational finance reform in Nebraska.' Also as in most states, Nebraska's main reform concern is the equity of fiscal distributions among school districts. Although, as anyone who has attempted to keep up with court decisions regarding educational finance knows,' equity is an elusive enough concept in the abstract and even more so when applied in the concrete. In general, though, the concern with regard to school finance is one of interdistrict equity. Using recent decisions as the criteria for judgment, the results of this study …

Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett Aug 1979

Institutional Economics And Urban Political Economy, Forrest Clinton Blodgett

Dissertations and Theses

The emergence of a complex and highly urbanized industrial society has inspired great study of urbanization and urban phenomena by social scientists. Unfortunately, most social scientists study urbanology within the relatively narrow confines of their particular disciplines. Sociologists concentrate on urban phenomena arising out of human-group relationships, while political scientists concentrate on units of urban government and intergovernmental relations. Likewise, economists study urbanology from a market perspective while geographers tend to concentrate on urban location theory and historians are concerned about the history of urbanization. Moreover, urban planners and research specialists are principally practitioners who receive and attempt to apply …

Competitive Bidding And Proprietary Information, Richard Engelbrecht-Wiggans, Robert J. Weber Aug 1979

Competitive Bidding And Proprietary Information, Richard Engelbrecht-Wiggans, Robert J. Weber

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The auction of an object is considered, for the case in which one bidder is better-informed than the others concerning the actual value of the object. An equilibrium point solution of the competitive bidding game is determined; at this equilibrium, the expected revenue of the less-well-informed bidders is zero. The case of an object which can take only values from a discrete set is dealt with as the limit of auctions of continuously-valued objects.
