The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …

Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Privatization of environmental resources is a promising approach for mitigating the tragedy of the commons. The present paper focuses on the impact and theoretical underpinnings of privatization within economic structures. The first part lays out a strong ethical case against state ownership, rooted in the belief that the state's claim to ownership inherently involves coercion, which likens taxation to theft due to its compulsory nature. The second part provides evidence that privatization leads to enhanced profitability and efficiency across sectors. This study examines challenges faced by subsistence women entrepreneurs during COVID-19, the crisis of 2020, and their resilience in addressing the circumstances. The results of qualitative interviews with 13 subsistence marketplace women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh are presented in this article. In the current study, two themes are found to best capture the experiences and resilience of women business owners in the subsistence marketplaces. Furthermore, the study provides important insights from informant interviews, showing how women business owners navigate their operations during a pandemic. It highlights attributes such as relational strength and faith in a higher power that contribute to their …
An Analysis Of Wage Determinants And Gender Wage Inequality In The Daily Labor Market Of Bangladesh: A Quantile Regression Approach, Al Mamun
Arab Economic and Business Journal
This study investigates wage determination and gender-based wage disparities in Bangladesh's daily labor market using HIES 2010 and 2016 datasets and OLS and Quantile Regression methods. Results reveal a substantial gender wage gap, with females earning 22.9% less than males in 2010, increasing to 62.2% in 2016. The gap lessens across quantiles, indicating a sticky floor effect in both years. Various determinants, including human capital and social factors, affect wages differently. Policy implications underscore the need for equal pay advocacy, shared familial responsibilities, and targeted interventions to rectify gender-based wage disparities. يهدف هذا البحث إلى تحليل تأثير تكامل الاستدامة في التخطيط الاستراتيجي على جودة المعلومات المحاسبية في القطاع المصرفي، حيث تم اختيار عينة من المصارف في سوق العراق للأوراق المالية، وذلك لأنها تعد تقارير الاستدامة بشكل دوري، حيث اعتمد البحث على المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، وجمعت البيانات باستخدام استبانة وزعت على 110 المحاسبين والمدققين والمديرين الماليين في تلك المصارف والمحللين الماليين ، حيث تم استرجاع 93 استبانة صالحة للتحليل، بنسبة استجابة بلغت 84.5%، وقد ركزت الاستبانة على قياس تأثير تطبيق استدامة التخطيط الاستراتيجي على تحسين جودة المعلومات المحاسبية، مثل الشفافية والدقة والموثوقية، وأظهرت النتائج أن دمج مبادئ الاستدامة في التخطيط الاستراتيجي يعزز …

Recent research has shown how norms shape political and economic decision-making. Much of this work assumes that a single norm influences the behavior of all people, but in fact, many situations are characterized by the existence of competing normative viewpoints. We apply a method for measuring belief in the simultaneous existence of multiple norms. Such multiplicity arises naturally when norms are associated with distinctive groups, and thus political polarization can be characterized, in part, as a product of diverging norms between groups. This study aims to investigate the following factors (religiosity, attitude, subjective norms, control behavior, Halal certification and perceived availability) that could affect the purchase intention of Halal products in Lebanese context. The research offers explanations for each variable in the suggested model. The research aims to analyze the relationship between monetary policy tools and the structure of domestic debt in Iraq based on the multiple regression model after testing the stability of the series under study using approved tests based on monthly data (2016-2024). The research reached several conclusions confirming a relationship between the variables. Germany’s Climate Foreign Policy Strategy, released in December 2023, is the first of its kind anywhere. The document elevates a set of climate objectives to the highest level of Germany’s foreign policy. This paper examines Germany as a case study of how a consistently ambitious climate actor may shift its policy preferences over time. Party policy shifts are traced within government documents, campaign manifestos, and coalition contracts to consider the viability of three potential explanations: the demands of a “green” political constituency, a structural reaction to reduce energy dependencies, and feedback effects from international institutions.
