Density Functional Theory (Dft) Study Of A Binary Mixture Of Mbba And Paa Liquid Crystal For Thz Application, Mirtunjai Mishra, Narinder Kumar, Pawan Singh, B. S. Rawat, Reena Dhyani, Devendra Singh, Devesh Kumar
Makara Journal of Science
The present scenario expresses the electro-optical effect of abinary mixture of MBBA and PAA liquid crystal studied under the impact of the electric field in THz frequency. The binary mixture has a negative order parameter, negative birefringence, and a nematic phase stability under such an electric field. The refractive index remains constant at high THz frequency. The director angle is sensitive to THz frequency, contributing to the maximum fluctuation. The atomic contribution of a binary mixture is approximately equal to the molecular contribution. The binary mixture has a remarkably high bandgap. The C-H, O-C, C-N atom stretching, and wagging of …

Dynamic Rbi With Central Difference Method Approach In Calculation Of Uniform Corrosion Rate: A Casestudy On Gas Pipelines, M.Riefqi Dwi Alviansyah, Fernanda Hartoyo, Zahra Nadia Nurullia, Ari Kurniawan
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
The oil and gas industry generally uses a piping system to drain fluids. Even though the pipes used have been well designed, the use of pipes as a means of fluid transportation still provides the possibility of failure that can occur at any time, one of which is due to uniform corrosion. The use of standard Risk Based Inspection (RBI) according to the API RBI 581 document has been widely used to anticipate potential failures to pipe components. The use of standard RBI can reduce the risk of failure significantly. Because the standard RBI considers the component risk value to …
Supercontinuum Light Generation Via Non-Linear Effects In Hollow-Core Fiber, Skyler Gulati
Supercontinuum Light Generation Via Non-Linear Effects In Hollow-Core Fiber, Skyler Gulati
Physics Student Works
The field of non-linear optics has gained traction in the last couple decades due to the variable generation of wavelengths which are less deterministic than within traditional optics. Using non-linear mediums, including hollow-core fibers (HCF), generation of wavelengths spanning into the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength range is possible. These short wavelengths can be utilized within electron spectroscopy-based methods of material science like angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). This technique most often uses specific photoemission lines of atoms in discharge lamps, however, with the frequency dispersion capabilities of HCF, broad band creation can allow for variable wavelength selection through filtering specific wavelengths …
Probability Distributions Of The Scalar Potential, Candace Mathews
Probability Distributions Of The Scalar Potential, Candace Mathews
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In the study of cosmological inflation, string theory and supersymmetry have motivated a wide range of possible inflationary models. These models can be parameterized by a scalar potential V, which is a function of N scalar fields, and determines cosmological parameters such as the vacuum stability and energy density. In principle, we can determine V through high energy physics, such as string theory. In practice, though we may not know the details of V we might have clues about a distribution of plausible V’s, which we can build statistics on to further analyze. The purpose of this thesis defense is …

Highly time-resolved mechanical measurements, modeling, and simulations show that large shear bands in bulk metallic glasses nucleate in a manner similar to cracks. When small slips reach a nucleation size, the dynamics changes and the shear band rapidly grows to span the entire sample. Smaller nucleation sizes imply lower ductility. Ductility can be increased by increasing the nucleation size relative to the maximum (“cutoff”) shear band size at the upper edge of the power law scaling range of their size distribution. This can be achieved in three ways: (1) by increasing the nucleation size beyond this cutoff size of the …
Performance Analysis Of The Dominant Mode Rejection Beamformer, Enlong Hu
Performance Analysis Of The Dominant Mode Rejection Beamformer, Enlong Hu
Dissertations
In array signal processing over challenging environments, due to the non-stationarity nature of data, it is difficult to obtain enough number of data snapshots to construct an adaptive beamformer (ABF) for detecting weak signal embedded in strong interferences. One type of adaptive method targeting for such applications is the dominant mode rejection (DMR) method, which uses a reshaped eigen-decomposition of sample covariance matrix (SCM) to define a subspace containing the dominant interferers to be rejected, thereby allowing it to detect weak signal in the presence of strong interferences. The DMR weight vector takes a form similar to the adaptive minimum …

A Computational Model Of The Line-1 Retrotransposon Life Cycle And Visualization Of Metabolic Networks In 3-Dimensions., Michael D. Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Computational modeling of metabolic reactions and cellular systems is evolving as a tool for quantitative prediction of metabolic parameters and reaction pathway analysis. In this work, the basics of computational cell biology are presented as well as a summary of physical processes within the cell, and the algorithmic methods used to find time dependent solutions. Protein-protein and enzyme-substrate interactions are mathematically represented via mass action kinetics to construct sets of linear differential equations that describe reaction rates and formation of protein complexes. Using mass action methods, examples of reaction networks and their solutions are presented within the Virtual Cell simulation …

Development Of Graphical Models And Statistical Physics Motivated Approaches To Genomic Investigations, Yashwanth Lagisetty
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Identifying genes involved in disease pathology has been a goal of genomic research since the early days of the field. However, as technology improves and the body of research grows, we are faced with more questions than answers. Among these is the pressing matter of our incomplete understanding of the genetic underpinnings of complex diseases. Many hypotheses offer explanations as to why direct and independent analyses of variants, as done in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), may not fully elucidate disease genetics. These range from pointing out flaws in statistical testing to invoking the complex dynamics of epigenetic processes. In the …

Type I Error Rate Controlling Procedures For Multiple Hypotheses Testing, Beibei Li
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses several different but related topics arising in the field of multiple testing, including weighted procedures and graphical approaches for controlling the familywise error rate (FWER), and stepwise procedures with control of the false discovery rate (FDR) for discrete data. It consists of three major parts.
The first part investigates weighted procedures for controlling the FWER. In many statistical applications, hypotheses may be differentially weighted according to their different importance. Many weighted multiple testing procedures (wMTPs) have been developed for controlling the FWER. Among these procedures, two weighted Holm procedures are commonly used in practice: one is based …
Dynamics Of Polymer Melts And Polymer Nanocomposites Studied By Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Mengchun Wu
Dynamics Of Polymer Melts And Polymer Nanocomposites Studied By Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Mengchun Wu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Materials based on polymers and polymeric nanocomposites have properties advantageous for many applications. In many cases, the physical behavior is connected to molecular motion. Polymers are macromolecules in which both fast local motions and slower chain relaxations may contribute to the material properties. Answering fundamental questions on the molecular dynamics is challenging, because of the existence of many different processes and the strong temperature dependence of the processes. An investigation covering a broad window over many orders of magnitude in the time scale is needed. Hence, dielectric spectroscopy is an appropriate tool to enhance fundamental understanding. This dissertation pays special …
Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias
Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Out-of-equilibrium dynamics generalizes the study of ground states of quantum Hamiltonians at zero temperature, to that of dynamical quasi-steady states of quantum systems far from equilibrium. In this dissertation I discuss dynamical quantum phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium phases of matter in models of collective spins with multi-body interactions. These models, based on collective degrees of freedom, allow an exact description of the thermodynamic limit via the mean-field description. In this limit, the nonequilibrium dynamics of properties of quantum states is mapped to the nonlinear dynamics of classical variables, and thus it can be analyzed using tools from the theory of …
The Interaction Of Topological Defects In Anisotropically-Elastic Nematic Liquid Crystals, Carter J. Swift
The Interaction Of Topological Defects In Anisotropically-Elastic Nematic Liquid Crystals, Carter J. Swift
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Topological defects are very well understood so long as the medium in which they exist is isotropically-elastic. They lead to director fields which are easy to calculate and superpose linearly so that a system with any number of defects is analytically treatable. They also have an interaction which is simple in form and can be accurately described by the Peach-Koehler force. In an anisotropically-elastic medium, however, such defects are very poorly understood outside of the single-defect case which was solved by Dzyaloshinskii. In this project, numerical and approximate analytical techniques are applied in order to better understand the interaction between …
Estimation Of Pure B Power In Polarized Cmb Data Via Gibbs Sampling., Joseph Sterling
Estimation Of Pure B Power In Polarized Cmb Data Via Gibbs Sampling., Joseph Sterling
Honors Theses
In the search for effective processes to estimate E and B spectra from polarized data, Gibbs Sampling has proven to be a powerful method. In the search for B modes, it is essential to avoid a false positive detection due to contamination from the larger E component. It is therefore of interest to combine Gibbs sampling with methods to “purify” the B modes, ensuring that a B-mode detection is robust. This goal can be achieved by compelling the Gibbs Sampler to estimate a pure B spectrum. The method we chose to implement involves an artificially inflated E spectrum, which “forces” …
Memory Capacity In A System Of Swelling Particles, David T. Keating
Memory Capacity In A System Of Swelling Particles, David T. Keating
Physics
A system has the ability to store memory if one is able to write, retrieve, and erase information from it. Some systems are capable of storing multiple transient memories; with no noise in these systems, at long time, the memories degrade until one or two remain. The addition of noise to these systems can extend the retention of multiple memories, in some cases indefinitely [2, 3]. While this behavior was first observed in simulations of charge density waves, it has since appeared in other systems [1].
Past research has shown that sheared non-Brownian liquid suspensions of particles exhibit similar behavior …

Automatized approaches for nanoparticle synthesis and characterization represent a great asset to their applicability in the biomedical field by improving reproducibility and standardization, which help to meet the selection criteria of regulatory authorities. The scaled-up production of nanoparticles with carefully defined characteristics, including intrinsic morphological features, and minimal intra-batch, batch-to-batch, and operator variability, is an urgent requirement to elevate nanotechnology towards more trustable biological and technological applications. In this work, microfluidic approaches were employed to achieve fast mixing and good reproducibility in synthesizing a variety of gold nanostructures. The microfluidic setup allowed exploiting spatial resolution to investigate the growth evolution …

Numerical Treatment For Special Type Of Mixed Linear Delay Volterra Integro-Differential Equations, Atheer J. Kadhim
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
The idea of research is a representation of the nonlinear pseudo-random generators using state-space equations that is not based on the usual description as shift register synthesis but in terms of matrices. Different types of nonlinear pseudo-random generators with their algorithms have been applied in order to investigate the output pseudo-random sequences. Moreover, two examples are given for conciliated the results of this representation.
Charge Transport And Spin Dynamics Of Color Centers In Diamond, Damon Daw
Charge Transport And Spin Dynamics Of Color Centers In Diamond, Damon Daw
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Solid state defects in diamond are promising candidates for room temperature quantum information processors (1, 3, 5). Chief among these defects is the nitrogen vacancy center (‘NV center’ or ‘NV’). The NV has long coherence times (at 300K) and its state is easily initialized, manipulated and read out (5). However, the outstanding issue of entangling NV centers in a scalable fashion, at room temperature remains a challenge. This thesis presents experimental and theoretical work aimed at achieving this goal by developing the ‘flying qubit’ framework in (1). This method for remote entanglement utilizes a charge carrier (initialized into a definite …

The Cavity-Embedded Cooper Pair Transistor As A Charge Detector Operating In The Nonlinear Regime, Bhargava Thyagarajan
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The cavity-embedded Cooper pair transistor (cCPT) has been shown to be a nearly quantum limited charge detector operating with only a single intracavity photon. Here, we use the inherent Kerr nonlinearity to demonstrate a dispersive charge sensing technique inspired by the Josephson bifurcation amplifier. Operating in the bistable regime close to a bifurcation edge, the cCPT is sensitive to charge shifts of 0.09e in a single-shot readout scheme with a detection time of 3 μs and a detection fidelity of 94%. The readout is implemented with only ∼ 25 intracavity photons in the high oscillation amplitude state, still several orders …
Generally Covariant Theory Of Multipole Moment Conserving Quasiparticles, Gavin Eric Riley
Generally Covariant Theory Of Multipole Moment Conserving Quasiparticles, Gavin Eric Riley
Honors Theses and Capstones
This report represents the creation of a field theory which is capable of describing quasiparticle excitations that preserve 2^k -pole moments. These quasiparticles exhibit certain ’semidynamic’ properties such as individual particle immobility but free movement of bound 2^L-tuples. We provide a review of work done on dipole conserving fractons and their dynamics [1] and expand upon it to describe higher moment conserving systems with global quadratic (and higher) phase symmetry. This requires the selection of the temporal and spatial directions. The selection of a temporal direction is done with a foliation defined by an anisotropic scaling of space and time, …

A Surrogate Model Of Molecular Dynamics Simulations For Polar Fluids: Supervised Learning Methods For Molecular Polarization And Unsupervised Methods For Phase Classification, Zackerie W. Hjorth
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation is a standard computational tool in soft matter physics. While very powerful, it is computationally expensive, leading to some simulations taking days or even weeks to complete depending on the size of your computer cluster. Finding computationally cheap surrogate models which can learn the output features of MD simulation is therefore highly motivated. In this report I explore the use of deep neural network ensembles as well as support vector machine regressors as surrogate models for MD simulation. From the output of the surrogate models, we can then employ unsupervised learning methods to get insight into …
Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao
Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We have developed a lattice Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on the diffusion-limited aggregation model that accounts for the effect of the physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) on lithium dendrite growth. Our simulations show that the size asymmetry between the cation and anion, the dielectric constant, and the volume fraction of ILs are critical factors to significantly suppress the dendrite growth, primarily due to substantial changes in electric-field screening. Specifically, the volume fraction of ILs has the optimal value for dendrite suppression. The present simulation method indicates potential challenges for the model extension to macroscopic systems. Therefore, we also …
Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Dissertations
Two-sample location-scale refers to a model that permits a pair of standardized random variables to have a common distribution. This means that if X1 and X2 are two random variables with means µ1 and µ2 and standard deviations ?1 and ?2, then (X1 - µ1)/?1 and (X2 - µ2)/?2 have some common unspecified standard or base distribution F0. Function-based hypothesis testing for these models refers to formal tests that would help determine whether or not two samples may have come from some location-scale …
Dependent Censoring In Survival Analysis, Zhongcheng Lin
Dependent Censoring In Survival Analysis, Zhongcheng Lin
Dissertations
This dissertation mainly consists of two parts. In the first part, some properties of bivariate Archimedean Copulas formed by two time-to-event random variables are discussed under the setting of left censoring, where these two variables are subject to one left-censored independent variable respectively. Some distributional results for their joint cdf under different censoring patterns are presented. Those results are expected to be useful in both model fitting and checking procedures for Archimedean copula models with bivariate left-censored data. As an application of the theoretical results that are obtained, a moment estimator of the dependence parameter in Archimedean copula models is …

Since it is now possible to make, in a controlled fashion, an almost unlimited variety of nanostructure shapes, it is of increasing interest to understand the forms of biological control that nanoscale shape allows. However, a priori rational investigation of such a vast universe of shapes appears to present intractable fundamental and practical challenges. This has limited the useful systematic investigation of their biological interactions and the development of innovative nanoscale shape-dependent therapies. Here, we introduce a concept of biologically relevant inductive nanoscale shape discovery and evaluation that is ideally suited to, and will ultimately become, a vehicle for machine …
Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Intracavity Phase Interferometry (IPI) is a detection technique that exploits the inherent sensitivity of a laser's frequency to the parameters of its cavity. Intracavity interferometry is orders of magnitude more sensitive than its extracavity alternatives. This dissertation improves on previous free-space proof-of-concept designs. By implementing the technique in fiber optics, using optical parametric oscillation, and investigating non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and dispersion tailoring enhancement techniques, IPI has become more applicable and sensitive. Ring and linear IPI configurations were realized in this work, both operating as bidirectional fiber optical parametric oscillators. The benefit of using externally pumped synchronous optical parametric oscillation is …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the vicinity of a quantum critical point, quenched disorder can lead to a quantum Griffiths phase, accompanied by an exotic power-law scaling with a continuously varying dynamical exponent that diverges in the zero-temperature limit. Here, we investigate a nematic quantum critical point in the iron-based superconductor FeSe0.89S0.11 using applied hydrostatic pressure. We report an unusual crossing of the magneto resistivity isotherms in the Non superconducting normal state that features a continuously varying dynamical exponent over a large temperature range. We interpret our results in terms of a quantum Griffiths phase caused by nematic islands that result from the local …
Entropic Density Functional Theory : Entropic Inference And The Equilibrium State Of Inhomogeneous Fluids, Ahmad Yousefi
Entropic Density Functional Theory : Entropic Inference And The Equilibrium State Of Inhomogeneous Fluids, Ahmad Yousefi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A unified formulation of the density functional theory is constructed on the foundations of entropic inference in both the classical and the quantum regimes. The theory is introduced as an application of entropic inference for inhomogeneous fluids in thermal equilibrium. It is shown that entropic inference reproduces the variational principle of DFT when informationabout expected density of particles is imposed. In the classical regime, this process introduces a family of trial density-parametrized probability distributions, and consequently a trial entropy, from which the preferred one is found using the method of Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). In the quantum regime, similarly, the process …
Swarming Oscillators With Time-Delayed Interactions, Nicholas S. Blum
Swarming Oscillators With Time-Delayed Interactions, Nicholas S. Blum
Physics
We investigate the role of delay in the collective dynamics of particles that swarm in space and possess an internal oscillatory degree of freedom, called swarmalators. Swarmalators were introduced recently by O’Keeffe, Hong, and Strogatz in Nature Communications 8, 1504 (2017). The addition of a time delay into the system of swarmalators was motivated by the biology of early embryonic development. This delay leads to a rich phenomenology, which includes two new collective states, which we call "semi-static crystal" and "boiling". In the semi-static crystal state, all particles in a cluster undergo decaying radial oscillations completely in phase with one …
Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman
Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within a colloidal suspension gravity may compromise the observation of governing physical interactions, especially those that are weak and/or take significant time to develop. Conducting the experiment in a long-term microgravity environment is a viable option to negate gravitational effects, though significant resources are required to do so. While it may not be possible to simulate long-term microgravity terrestrially, particles can resist quick sedimentation in a confined suspension system rotating vertically with appropriate rotation speed. The goal of the investigation is to demonstrate the existence of long-term particle suspension regime for a certain colloidal suspension while characterizing colloidal behavior due …

Robust Method Of Determining Microfacet Brdf Parameters In The Presence Of Noise Via Recursive Optimization, Michael W. Bishop, Samuel D. Butler, Michael A. Marciniak
Faculty Publications
Accurate bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models are essential for computer graphics and remote sensing performance. The popular microfacet class of BRDF models is geometric-optics-based and computationally inexpensive. Fitting microfacet models to scatterometry measurements is a common yet challenging requirement that can result in a model being fit as one of several unique local minima. Final model fit accuracy is therefore largely based on the quality of the initial parameter estimate. This makes for widely varying material parameter estimates and causes inconsistent performance comparisons across microfacet models, as will be shown with synthetic data. We proposed a recursive optimization method …
