A Comparative Study Of Conventional And Statistically Active Corrosion Methods For Corrosion Growth Assessment Of A 24-Inch Gas Pipeline, Rudi Rinaldi, Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Component failures in oil and gas pipelines can have fatal consequences, leading to operational downtimes and environmental damage. Knowledge of the corrosion growth rate is fundamental to pipeline integrity management, as it is essential for risk assessment and decisions related to asset management. This article aimed to compare two approaches for the corrosion growth estimation of the 24-inch offshore gas pipeline: the conventional method versus the Statistically Active Corrosion (SAC) method. This article is based on the in-line inspection (ILI) results of two consecutive assessments from 2020 to 2023 of the entire 73 km of the pipeline. The results show …
Experimental Characterization, Computational Investigation, And Structure-Property–Activity Relationship Studies Of Nickel Ferrite Nanostructures, Ali Ben Ahmed
Polytechnic Journal
Intending to predict the multifunctionality of Nickel ferrite in several technological and medical fields, we have prepared nickel ferrite nanostructure by coprecipitation method. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is used to determine the crystalline structure and phase composition of materials by analyzing the pattern of X-rays scattered by the atoms within the material. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provides information about a material's chemical bonds and functional groups by analyzing how it absorbs infrared light at various wavelengths. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) offers high-resolution images of the material's surface morphology and texture by scanning it with a focused beam of electrons. Transmission …
Fock Space And Field Theoretic Description Of Nonequilibrium Work Relations, Andrew J. Baish, Benjamin Vollmayr-Lee
Fock Space And Field Theoretic Description Of Nonequilibrium Work Relations, Andrew J. Baish, Benjamin Vollmayr-Lee
Faculty Journal Articles
We consider classical, interacting particles coupled to a thermal reservoir and subject to a local, time-varying potential while undergoing hops on a lattice. We impose detailed balance on the hopping rates and map the dynamics to the Fock space Doi representation, from which we derive the Jarzynski and Crooks relations. Here the local potential serves to drive the system far from equilibrium and to provide the work. Next, we utilize the coherent state representation to map the system to a Doi–Peliti field theory and take the continuum limit. We demonstrate that time reversal in this field theory takes the form …

This study investigates the printability limitations of 3D-printed continuous 316L stainless steel fibre-reinforced polymer composites obtained using the Materials Extrusion (MEX) technique. The objective was to better understand the geometric printing limitations of composites fabricated using continuous steel fibres, based on a combination of bending stiffness testing and piezoresistive property studies. The 0.5 mm composite filaments used in this study were obtained by co-extruding polylactic acid (PLA), with a 316 L stainless steel fibre (SSF) bundle. The composite printability limitations were evaluated by the printing of a series of ’teardrop’ shaped geometries with angles in the range from 5◦ to …

Humanity has a tendency to divide time. The past is distinct from the present which is entirely separate from the future. In supposedly 20-20 vision history is neatly divided into different sections, distinct eras with sharp lines between them. What is present and in the future is always modern. What is past is something else with another name.
Yet time is not divided so neatly. We know this living through it: years and decades blend into one another in a non-uniform progression. To divide human history into separate eras is a necessary simplification, as it helps to ascribe order onto …

Mesostructure Reconstruction Of Prepreg Platelet Molded Composite With Artificial Intelligence, Richard Larson
Mesostructure Reconstruction Of Prepreg Platelet Molded Composite With Artificial Intelligence, Richard Larson
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Prepreg platelet molded composites (PPMC) are long, discontinuous fiber reinforced polymer materials. PPMC are an important subcategory of composite materials as they are processible into geometrically complex structures and can be produced via high-throughput manufacturing processes, however they have higher stiffness and strength as compared to traditional discontinuous fiber reinforced polymers. However, there is inherent randomness in the structure of PPMCs and as such, PPMC parts frequently require per part testing that is cost prohibitive.
Herein, a method using artificial intelligence is proposed as a more cost-effective method of inspecting PPMC parts. Different artificial intelligence (AI) architectures are explored to …

Quantics Tensor Trains: The Study Of A Continuous Lattice Model And Beyond, Aleix Bou Comas
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This four-chapter dissertation studies the efficient discretization of continuous variable functions with tensor train representation. The first chapter describes all the methodology used to discretize functions and store them efficiently. In this section, the algorithm tensor renormalization group is explained for self-containment purposes. The second chapter centers around the XY model. Quantics tensor trains are used to describe the transfer matrix of the model and compute one and two-dimensional quantities. The one dimensional magnitudes are compared to analytical results with an agreement close to machine precision. As for two dimensions, the analytical results cannot be computed. However, the critical temperature …
Information Theoretic Bounds For Capacity And Bayesian Risk, Ian Zieder
Information Theoretic Bounds For Capacity And Bayesian Risk, Ian Zieder
Dissertations
In this dissertation, the problem of finding lower error bounds on the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) and the maximum capacity achieving distribution for a specific channel is addressed. Presented are two parts, a new lower bound on the MMSE and upper and lower bounds on the capacity achieving distribution for a Binomial noise channel. The new lower bound on the MMSE is achieved via use of the Poincare inequality. It is compared to the performance of the well known Ziv-Zakai error bound. The second part considers a binomial noise channel and is concerned with the properties of the capacity-achieving distribution. …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
Railway axle serves as a vital connection between the train's wheels and its body. However, cyclic loading and high speed can induce fatigue in railway axle, which potentially leads to damage human safety. Therefore, it is important to find materials that have good mechanical properties with the lowest weight and cost. In this paper, a comprehensive method using Ashby chart has been performed to select candidate materials of railway axle. The methods begin with analyzing function by determining the problem, objective function, and constraints. After that, the results obtained are ranked using Pahl and Beitz quantitative weighting method. The results …

Investigation Of Domain Formation During Phase Separation In A Mixture Of Flexible And Rigid Biopolymers, Steven Huntley
Investigation Of Domain Formation During Phase Separation In A Mixture Of Flexible And Rigid Biopolymers, Steven Huntley
All Theses
Complex fluids and heterogenous mixtures composed of multiple types of polymers are found throughout industrial and biological fluid systems. For example, extrusion based additive manufacturing systems pass dense mixtures of polymers through the extrusion heads to deposit composite polymeric materials. In cells, active and complex mixtures of biopolymers self-organize into assemblies that perform critical physiological functions.
Polymers in dense solutions undergo phase separation as a result of differences in physiochemical properties. A few examples of these properties include charge, structure, rigidity, and hydrophobicity. We observe the formation of polymer domains composed of rigid and a flexible biopolymer species that phase …
Application Of The Fokker-Planck Equation For Quantifying Initial Condition Uncertainty Of Reversible Dynamic Systems, Troy S. Newhart
Application Of The Fokker-Planck Equation For Quantifying Initial Condition Uncertainty Of Reversible Dynamic Systems, Troy S. Newhart
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Characterizing the behavior of dynamic systems requires the inclusion of initial conditions to propagate behavior forward in time. More realistic representations of system behavior quantify uncertainty about the initial conditions to assess sensitivity, reliability, and other stochastic response parameters. In many engineering applications, the uncertain initial conditions may be unknown given a desired response. This research applies the Fokker-Planck equation to reversible dynamic systems of select multi-dimensional nonlinear differential equations as a means for predicting the uncertainty about initial conditions. An alternating directions implicit numerical scheme is used to numerically solve the Fokker-Planck equation for both forward and reversed equations …

Makara Journal of Science
Amino acids and their complexes are organic or semiorganic materials that have attracted considerable attention because they can be easily used in optical storage devices. DL-alanine is one of the rare amino acids that crystallizes in anoncentrosymmetric group. This article demonstrates how DL-alanine potassium dichromate (DAPC) single crystals have shown sufficient growth. DAPC crystals were analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. Using thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry, this work also examined the melting point, thermal stability, decomposition point, and other thermal parameters of the DAPC crystals. Results show that the decomposition point …

Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang
Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang
HMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the connection between physics and machine learning by using Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) to study the thermodynamic properties of the Ising model. The Ising model is a simple but realistic model that captures the magnetic behavior of a system, where spins occupy a lattice of sites and different spin configurations correspond to different energies. The model exhibits phase transitions between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases as a function of temperature. RBMs are two-layered neural networks that can learn probability distributions over binary spins. The study generates 2D Ising model data at different temperatures using Monte Carlo simulations, including …

Dependence Of Energy Transfer On Curvature Similarity In Collisions Involving Curved Shock Fronts, Justin Cassell
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In high-speed collisions of projectiles, pressure exerted by a resulting shock wave is so high that even solids begin to flow and hydrodynamics becomes relevant. Jetting results from hydrodynamic instability driving the evolution of an interface following shock loading. Our emphasis in this dissertation is mitigation of instabilities via several shocks and, specifically, the transfer of energy from a shock wave to another object. To that end, in 2022 and 2023 while on-site, we adapted Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to explore the effects of shock front geometry on the transfer of energy during shock collisions via numerous computer simulations. …

Interpreting Neural Operators: How Nonlinear Waves Propagate In Non-Reciprocal Solids, Jonathan Colen, Alexis Poncet, Denis Bartolo, Vincenzo Vitelli
Data Science Faculty Publications
We present a data-driven pipeline for model building that combines interpretable machine learning, hydrodynamic theories, and microscopic models. The goal is to uncover the underlying processes governing nonlinear dynamics experiments. We exemplify our method with data from microfluidic experiments where crystals of streaming droplets support the propagation of nonlinear waves absent in passive crystals. By combining physics-inspired neural networks, known as neural operators, with symbolic regression tools, we generate the solution, as well as the mathematical form, of a nonlinear dynamical system that accurately models the experimental data. Finally, we interpret this continuum model from fundamental physics principles. Informed by …

Progress In Physics: Twentieth Year Of Publication, Florentin Smarandache, Andreas Ries, Pierre Millette, Ebenezer Chifu
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The journal Progress in Physics was created in January 2005 on behalf of many influential scientists with whom we were in correspondence. The main reason was that publications in other journals were allowed only if the submitter was affiliated with a scientific institution or research organization. Given this situation, many working scientists finding themselves partially employed or unemployed, such as in between research grants, find themselves unable to publish their research results. Even e-print archives such as Cornell’s arXiv required scientific affiliation and still follow this policy.
Hydrodynamics Of Drops And Particles Driven By Marangoni And Diffusiophoretic Forces, Subramaniam Chembai Ganesh
Hydrodynamics Of Drops And Particles Driven By Marangoni And Diffusiophoretic Forces, Subramaniam Chembai Ganesh
Dissertations and Theses
This study investigates the hydrodynamics of particles and drops driven by forces generated by an asymmetrical physical and chemical surrounding environment. In the first part, a novel colloidal motor design driven by surface tension forces is proposed, utilizing an active Janus particle encapsulated in an immiscible liquid drop to form a compound drop/particle. Marangoni forces induced by asymmetric solute adsorption at the liquid-liquid interface of the drop propels the compound system. The propulsion speeds of the motor are analyzed for various relative sizes and configurations of the Janus particle and the encapsulating drop and the effects of varying the transport …

Leveraging Redundancy As A Link Between Spreading Dynamics On And Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
A constant quest in network science has been in the development of methods to identify the most relevant components in a dynamical system solely via the interaction structure amongst its subsystems. This information allows the development of control and intervention strategies in biochemical signaling and epidemic spreading. We highlight the relevant components in heterogeneous dynamical system by their patterns of redundancy, which can connect how dynamics affect network topology and which pathways are necessary to spreading phenomena on networks. In order to measure the redundancies in a large class of empirical systems, we develop the backbone of directed networks methodology, …
