Excitation Of Ducted Gravity Waves In The Lower Thermosphere By Tropospheric Sources, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko
Excitation Of Ducted Gravity Waves In The Lower Thermosphere By Tropospheric Sources, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko
Publications
Short-period, small-scale gravity waves are frequently observed in nighttime airglow imaging experiments. These waves are often found to be ducted and may be confined to a thin region of altitude in the mesosphere or lower thermosphere. An apparent paradox of high-altitude ducted waves is the nature of the source; it is necessary that a ducted wave be excited in situ or have been able to tunnel into the duct from another atmospheric region. In this paper, analytical and numerical solutions are presented for simple thermally ducted gravity waves that are Doppler-shifted by constant background winds. Using a continuous analytical model, …

Shifting Baselines and New Meridians: Water, Resources, Landscapes, and the Transformation of the American West (Summer Conference, June 4-6)
The Center’s 29th annual conference will focus on the changes in the West resulting from rapid population growth, development, disrupted historical weather patterns and the effects of those changes on land, water, and energy resources. Speakers and panelists will address the adaptability of the legal and political institutions and how the transformation of the West may foreshadow fundamental changes to these institutions.
The agenda includes panel discussions that will address:
- Water for the 21st Century —the big questions in Western water and rethinking Western water law.
- The Future of Energy —practical and sophisticated solutions to overcome the energy …

An Analysis Of Dwarf And Pygmy Sperm Whale (Kogia Sp.) Stranding Data In The Southeast United States, Nicole M. O'Brien
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf sperm whales (Kogia sima) strand frequently in the southeastern United States (SEUS). To detect seasonal trends in Kogia sp. strandings across the SEUS, all 979 stranding events from 1977 through 2005 were segregated by month. A peak in strandings occurred in the late summer and early fall (July – October). The entire SEUS was divided into segments of similar coastline orientation, 1) North and South Carolina, 2) Georgia and the east coast of Florida, 3) Florida Keys, 4) west coast of Florida, 5) Florida panhandle, Alabama and Mississippi, 6) …

Climate Change Education And The Ecological Footprint, Eugene C. Cordero, Anne Marie Todd, Diana Abellera
Climate Change Education And The Ecological Footprint, Eugene C. Cordero, Anne Marie Todd, Diana Abellera
Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science
Global warming has become one of the most important scientific, political, and social issues of our era. In designing an effective mitigation strategy, it is clear that public education must play an important role. This study looks at various components of climate change literacy within a cohort of university students and investigates the impact of action-oriented learning on student understanding. Results from questionnaires given to primarily nonscience students enrolled in weather and climate courses are used to examine student knowledge of climate change. In agreement with prior research, this study finds that signif icant student misconceptions exist regarding the causes …
Interpreting The Spatial Distribution Of Bathypelagic Nekton Along The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, C. I. H. Anderson, J. Horne, Tracey Sutton
Interpreting The Spatial Distribution Of Bathypelagic Nekton Along The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, C. I. H. Anderson, J. Horne, Tracey Sutton
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The spatial distribution of organisms plays a key role in facilitating biological processes, such as trophic interactions, which govern ecosystem structure and function. Attempts to understand bathypelagic (1000-4000 m depth) ecosystem dynamics have been hampered by the coarse temporal-spatial resolution and static nature of most sampling strategies. This study combines a traditional approach, based on discrete net trawls sampling small volumes, with the continuous full water column coverage provided by fisheries acoustics to investigate the distribution of biomass along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The limited trawl samples have been interpreted as showing a positive relationship between the presence of the …

Optical Emissions Generated During Ionospheric Heating, Charles Kiumo Mutiso
Optical Emissions Generated During Ionospheric Heating, Charles Kiumo Mutiso
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Ionospheric heating, accomplished by transmitting a high-frequency electromagnetic wave into the atmosphere, stimulates a large number of linear and non-linear wave-plasma interactions. One outcome of these interactions is the acceleration of thermal ionospheric electrons, leading to the production of induced optical emissions. Detection of these emissions yields information regarding wave-plasma interactions, which are of fundamental importance in many physical processes, and provides an effective means of remotely sensing ionospheric constituents and dynamics.
During an ionospheric heating experiment performed at the High Power Auroral Stimulation facility in Alaska (64.9° N, 146.8° W), a modified Czerny-Turner grating spectrometer acquired high resolution optical …

Local Anthropogenic Impact On Particulate Elemental Carbon Concentrations At Summit, Greenland, Gayle S.W. Hagler, M Bergin, E A. Smith, M Town, Jack E. Dibb
Earth Sciences
Summit, Greenland is a remote Arctic research station allowing for field measurements at the highest point of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Due to the current reliance on diesel generators for electricity at Summit, unavoidable local emissions are a potential contamination threat to the measurement of combustion-related species in the air and snow. The effect of fossil-fuel combustion on particulate elemental carbon (EC) is assessed by a combination of ambient measurements (∼1 km from the main camp), a series of snow pits, and Gaussian plume modeling. Ambient measurements indicate that the air directly downwind of the research station generators experiences particulate …

We compare Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) version 2 (V002) nadir ozone profiles with ozonesonde profiles from the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment Ozonesonde Network Study, the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Data Center, the Global Monitoring Division of the Earth System Research Laboratory, and the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesonde archives. Approximately 1600 coincidences spanning 72.5°S–80.3°N from October 2004 to October 2006 are found. The TES averaging kernel and constraint are applied to the ozonesonde data to account for the TES measurement sensitivity and vertical resolution. TES sonde differences are examined in six latitude zones after excluding profiles with thick high clouds. Values …
