Tight Bounds On The Algebraic Connectivity Of A Balanced Binary Tree, Jason J. Molitierno, Michael Neumann, Bryan L. Shader

In this paper, quite tight lower and upper bounds are obtained on the algebraic connectivity, namely, the second-smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix, of an unweighted balanced binary tree with k levels and hence n = 2k - 1 vertices. This is accomplished by considering the inverse of a matrix of order k - 1 readily obtained from the Laplacian matrix. It is shown that the algebraic connectivity is 1/(2k - 2k + 3) + 0(1/22k).

Let p be a reflection on a closed Riemann Surface S, i.e., an anti-conformal involutary isometry of S with a non-empty fixed point subset. Let Sp denote the fixed point subset of p, which is also called the mirror of p. If S −Sp has two components, then p is called separating and we say that S splits at the mirror Sp. Otherwise p is called non-separating. We consider triangle-quadrilateral pairs in the hyperbolic plane which "kaleidoscopically" tile the plane simultaneously. In this case the tiling by quadrilaterals is called a divisible tiling. All possible such divisible tilings are classified. There are a finite number of 1,2, and 3 parameter families as well as a finite number of exceptional cases.

It is known that automorphic subsets are generalizations of cwatsets. In this paper we show that an automorphic subset is the translation of some cwatset, and therefore that each automorphic subset is internally isomorphic to a cwatset.

We establish versions of the Snake Lemma from homological algebra in the context of topological groups, Banach spaces, and operator algebras. We apply this tool to demonstrate that if ƒ : B → B′ is a quasi-unital C*-map of separable C*-algebras, so that it induces a map of Corona algebras ƒ̄ : QB → QB′, and if ƒ is mono, then the induced map ƒ̄ is also mono.

We present an extension of standard coalgebraic specification techniques for statebased systems which allows us to integrate constants and n-ary operations in a smooth way and, moreover, leads to a simplification of the coalgebraic structure of the models of a specification. The framework of (Ω,Ξ)-logic can be considered as the result of a translation of concepts of observational logic (cf. [9]) into the coalgebraic world. As a particular outcome we obtain the notion of an (Ω, Ξ)- structure and a sound and complete proof system for (first-order) observational properties of specifications.

All symmetry groups for surfaces of genus 2 and 3 are known. In this paper, we classify symmetry groups and tiling groups with three branch points for surfaces of genus 4 and 5. Also, a class of symmetry groups that are not tiling groups is presented, as well as a class of odd order non-abelian tiling groups.

In this paper, we consider triangle-quadrilateral pairs in the hyperbolic plane which “kaleidoscopically” tile the plane simultaneously. These tilings are called divisible tilings or subdivided tilings. We restrict our attention to the simplest case of divisible tilings, satisfying the corner condition, in which a single triangle occurs at each vertexof the quadrilateral. All possible such divisible tilings are catalogued as well as determining the minimal genus surface on which the divisible tiling exists. The tiling groups of these surfaces are also determined.

A central question in the area of topological graph theory is to find the genus of a given graph. In particular, the genus parameter has been studied for Cayley graphs. A Cayley graph is a representation of a group and a fixed generating set for that group. A group is said to be planar if there is a generating set which produces a planar Cayley graph. We say that a group is toroidal if there is a generating set that produces a toroidal Cayley graph and if there are no generating sets which produce a planar Cayley graph. Characterizations for …

In this paper, we will examine the backward shift operator Lf = (f −f(0))/z on certain Banach spaces of analytic functions on the open unit disk D. In particular, for a (closed) subspace M for which LM Ϲ M, we wish to determine the spectrum, the point spectrum, and the approximate point spectrum of L│M. In order to do this, we will use the concept of “pseudocontinuation" of functions across the unit circle T.

Generalized conjugation is the action of a group on its underlying set given by (g,x) -> p(g)xg-1, where p is some fixed endomorphism of G. Here we study combinatorial properties of the sizes of the orbits of the preceding action. In particular, we reduce the problem to a simpler case if p has nontrivial kernel, or if it is an inner automorphism, and we give a construction that allows a partial analysis in the general case.

A Warfield group is a direct summand of a simply presented abelian group. In this paper, we describe the Pontrjagin dual groups of Warfield groups, both for the p-local and the general case. A variety of characterizations of these dual groups is obtained. In addition, numerical invariants are given that distinguish between two such groups which are not topologically isomorphic.

Let A be a symmetric matrix and B be a nonnegative definite (nnd) matrix. We obtain a characterization of the class of nnd solutions Σ for the matrix equation AΣA = B. We then use the characterization to obtain all possible covariance structures under which the distributions of many common test statistics remain invariant, that is, the distributions remain the same except for a scale factor. Applications include a complete characterization of covariance structures such that the chisquaredness and independence of quadratic forms in ANOVA problems is preserved. This report provides an upper bound on the average weight of an element in a cwatset and discusses the ratio of the cardinality of a cwatset to the cardinality of the group containing the cwatset. The concept of a generalized cwatset is also introduced.

In this paper, we comment on the complexity of the invariant subspaces (under the bilateral Dirichlet shift f → ζf) of the harmonic Dirichlet space D. Using the sampling theory of Seip and some work on invariant subspaces of Bergman spaces, we will give examples of invariant subspaces F ⊂ D with dim(F/ζF) = n, n ∈ N ∪ {∞}. We will also generalize this to the Dirichlet classes Dα, 0 <α< ∞, as well as the Besov classes Bα p , 1
