Simplicity Of Ultragraph Algebras, Mark Tomforde

In this paper we analyze the structure of C*-algebras associated to ultragraphs, which are generalizations of directed graphs. We characterize the simple ultragraph algebras as well as deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for an ultragraph algebra to be purely infinite and to be AF. Using these techniques we also produce an example of an ultragraph algebra which is neither a graph algebra nor an Exel-Laca algebra. We conclude by proving that the C*-algebras of ultragraphs with no sinks are Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.

An indefinite generalization of Nudel′man’s problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Carath´eodory-Fej´er interpolation, the method yields new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solution to Nudel′man’s problem.

In this paper we argue that the category of Stone spaces forms an interesting base category for coalgebras, in particular, if one considers the Vietoris functor as an analogue to the power set functor. We prove that the so-called descriptive general frames, which play a fundamental role in the semantics of modal logics, can be seen as Stone coalgebras in a natural way. This yields a duality between the category of modal algebras and that of coalgebras over the Vietoris functor. Building on this idea, we introduce the notion of a Vietoris polynomial functor over the category of Stone spaces. …

There is a very beautiful correspondence between branched covers of the Riemann sphere P1 and subgroups of the fundamental group π1(P1 − {branch points}), exactly analogous to the correspondence between subfields of an algebraic extension E/F and subgroups of the Galois group Gal(E/F). This paper explores the concept of a Hecke algebra, which in this context is a generalization of the Galois group to the case of non- Galois covers S/P1. In contribution to the classification of all tilings of low-genus surfaces, the kaleidoscopic and non-kaleidoscopic tilings by quadrilaterals are given up to genus 12. As part of their classification, the algebraic structure of the conformal tiling groups and the geometric structure of the tiles are specified. In addition, several infinite classes of tilings and tiling groups are presented.

We examine the structure of central twisted transformation group C∗-algebras C0(X) ⋊id,u G, and apply our results to the group C ∗-algebras of central group extensions. Our methods require that we study Moore’s cohomology group H2 (G, C(X,T)), and, in particular, we prove an inflation result for pointwise trivial cocyles which may be of use elsewhere.

We consider orbifoldings of the Moonshine Module with respect to the abelian group generated by a pair of commuting Monster group elements with one of prime order p = 2, 3, 5, 7 and the other of order pk for k = 1 or k prime. We show that constraints arising from meromorphic orbifold conformal field theory allow us to demonstrate that each orbifold partition function with rational coefficients is either constant or is a hauptmodul for an explicitly found modular fixing group of genus zero. We thus confirm in the cases considered the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for all rational …

This paper studies coalgebras from the perspective of the finitary observations that can be made of their behaviours. Based on the terminal sequence, notions of finitary behaviours and finitary predicates are introduced. A category Behω(T) of coalgebras with morphisms preserving finitary behaviours is defined. We then investigate definability and compactness for finitary coalgebraic modal logic, show that the final object in Behω(T) generalises the notion of a canonical model in modal logic, and study the topology induced on a coalgebra by the finitary part of the terminal sequence.

We verify the Generalised Moonshine conjectures for some irrational modular functions for theMonster centralisers related to the Harada-Norton, Held, M12 and L3(3) simple groups based on certain orbifolding constraints. We find explicitly the fixing groups of the hauptmoduls arising in each case.

Realization theory for operator colligations on Pontryagin spaces is used to study interpolation and factorization in generalized Schur classes. Several criteria are derived which imply that a given function is almost the restriction of a generalized Schur function. The role of realization theory in coefficient problems is also discussed; a solution of an indefinite Carathéodory-Fejér problem is obtained, as well as a result that relates the number of negative (positive) squares of the reproducing kernels associated with the canonical coisometric, isometric, and unitary realizations of a generalized Schur function to the number of negative (positive) eigenvalues of matrices derived from …

Several extensions of Loewner’s theory of monotone operator functions are given. These include a theorem on boundary interpolation for matrix-valued functions in the generalized Nevanlinna class. The theory of monotone operator functions is generalized from scalar- to matrix-valued functions of an operator argument. A notion of -monotonicity is introduced and characterized in terms of classical Nevanlinna functions with removable singularities on a real interval. Corresponding results for Stieltjes functions are presented.

We show how coalgebras can be presented by operations and equations. This is a special case of Linton’s approach to algebras over a general base category X, namely where X is taken as the dual of sets. Since the resulting equations generalise coalgebraic coequations to situations without cofree coalgebras, we call them coequations. We prove a general co-Birkhoff theorem describing covarieties of coalgebras by means of coequations. We argue that the resulting coequational logic generalises modal logic.

We characterize finite-dimensional Lie algebras over the real numbers for which the classical Yang-Baxter equation has a non-trivial skew-symmetric solution (resp. a non-trivial solution with invariant symmetric part). Equivalently, we obtain a characterization of those finite-dimensional real Lie algebras which admit a non-trivial (quasi-) triangular Lie bialgebra structure.

Consider a surface, S, with a kaleidoscopic tiling by non-obtuse triangles (tiles), i.e., each local reflection in a side of a triangle extends to an isometry of the surface, preserving the tiling. The tiling is geodesic if the side of each triangle extends to a closed geodesic on the surface consisting of edges of tiles. The reflection group G*, generated by these reflections, is called the tiling group of the surface. A proper short exact sequence 0→HGK→0 (*) in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be topologically pure if the induced sequence 0→nHnG→nK→0 is proper short exact for all positive integers n. Some characterizations of topologically pure sequences in terms of direct decompositions, pure extensions and tensor products are established. A simple proof is given for a theorem on pure subgroups by Hartman and Hulanickl. We discuss some open questions regarding the unit sum numbers of free modules of arbitrary infinite rank over commutative rings and, in particular, over principal ideal domains. The unit sum numbers of rational groups are then investigated: the importance of the rational prime 2 being an automorphism of the rational group is discussed and other results are achieved considering the number and distribution of rational primes which are, or are not, automorphisms of the group. In [13], it was shown that modal logic for coalgebras dualises—concerning definability— equational logic for algebras. This paper establishes that, similarly, modal rules dualise implications:It is shown that a class of coalgebras is definable by modal rules iff it is closed under H (images) and Σ (disjoint unions). As a corollary the expressive power of rules of infinitary modal logic on Kripke frames is characterised.

A cwatset of order n can be represented by a transitive subgroup of Sn. Previous work has shown that each conjugacy class of rep­resentation groups corresponds to an isomorphism class of cwatsets. We present a technique for determining whether a particular transitive subgroup of Sn can appear as the representation group for a cwatset of order n. Using this method, we provide a full classification of cwatset isomorphism classes through order 23.

The problem of kaleidoscopically tiling a surface by congruent triangles is equivalent to finding groups generated in certain ways. In order to admit a tiling, a group must have a specific set of generators as well as an involutary automorphism, T, that acts to reverse the orientation of the tiles. The purpose of this paper is to explore group theoretic and computational methods for determining the existence of symmetry groups and tiling groups, as well as to classify the symmetry and tiling groups on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of genus 6 and 7.

We explore the consequences of cwatset isomorphism (there are a finite number of non-isomorphic cwatsets of each order) and consider parallels between the theory of groups and the theory of cwatsets (cwatsets of prime order are cyclic but direct sums of isomorphic cwatsets aren't necessarily isomorphic).

In [ABN], Araujo, Beckenstein, and Narici add the capstone to a series of papers by several groups of authors by showing that if ρ is a biseparating map between two algebras of all real or complex-valued functions on realcompact spaces, then it is a continuous multiple of an isomorphism between these rings. Their proof uses relatively powerful analytic and topological techniques. In what follows, the extent to which such a result can be generalized to a wider class of algebras using algebraic techniques is investigated. We are unable, however to obtain the main result of [ABN] using these techniques.

Considering the Chinese Postman Problem, in which a mailman must deliver mail to houses in a neighborhood. The mailman must cover each side of the street that has houses, at least once. The focus of this paper is our attempt to discover the optimal path, or the least number of times each street is walked. The integration of algorithms from graph theory and operations research form the method used to explain solutions to the Chinese Postman Problem.
