Constructing Binary Encoding Matrices From Joined Graphs, Joshua Avalos
Constructing Binary Encoding Matrices From Joined Graphs, Joshua Avalos
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Codes and technology are part of our daily lives and allow the modern world to function, and for us to have conveniences in our lives such as smartphones that can be used to privately call people on the other side of the planet, and for secure access to the internet. In this thesis we will explore the construction of binary codes created by vertex-edge incidence matrices of planar graphs. The Hamming (7,4) code was an incredible code that allowed the detection and correction of errors after receiving them through a transmission. We will explore the possibility of the creation of …
The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles
The Examination Of The Arithmetic Surface (3, 5) Over Q, Rachel J. Arguelles
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis is centered around the construction and analysis of the principal arithmetic surface (3, 5) over Q. By adjoining the two symbols i,j, where i2 = 3, j2 = 5, such that ij = -ji, I can produce a quaternion algebra over Q. I use this quaternion algebra to find a discrete subgroup of SL2(R), which I identify with isometries of the hyperbolic plane. From this quaternion algebra, I produce a large list of matrices and apply them via Mobius transformations to the point (0, 2), which is the center of my Dirichlet domain. This …
Symmetric Generation, Ana Gonzalez
Symmetric Generation, Ana Gonzalez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
We will examine progenitors. We start with progenitors of the form $m^{*n} : N$ where $m^{*n}$ is a free group and $N$ is a permutation group of degree $n$. But, $m^{*n} : N$ is a group of infinite order so we will factor by the necessary relations to get finite homomorphic images. These groups are constructed through the manual double coset enumeration method. We will examine how to construct progenitors for wreath products.
Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega
Lattice Reduction Algorithms, Juan Ortega
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to propose and analyze an algorithm that follows
similar steps of Guassian Lattice Reduction Algorithm in two-dimensions and applying
them to three-dimensions. We start off by discussing the importance of cryptography in
our day to day lives. Then we dive into some linear algebra and discuss specific topics that
will later help us in understanding lattice reduction algorithms. We discuss two lattice
problems: the shortest vector problem and the closest vector problem. Then we introduce
two types of lattice reduction algorithms: Guassian Lattice Reduction in two-dimensions
and the LLL Algortihm. We illustrate how both …

We have also explained how various types of additional relations are found. We have discovered original symmetric presentations and original constructions of numerous groups.
The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger
The Decomposition Of The Space Of Algebraic Curvature Tensors, Katelyn Sage Risinger
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
We decompose the space of algebraic curvature tensors (ACTs) on a finite dimensional, real inner product space under the action of the orthogonal group into three inequivalent and irreducible subspaces: the real numbers, the space of trace-free symmetric bilinear forms, and the space of Weyl tensors. First, we decompose the space of ACTs using two short exact sequences and a key result, Lemma 3.5, which allows us to express one vector space as the direct sum of the others. This gives us a decomposition of the space of ACTs as the direct sum of three subspaces, which at this point …

A Study In Applications Of Continued Fractions, Karen Lynn Parrish
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This is an expository study of continued fractions collecting ideas from several different sources including textbooks and journal articles. This study focuses on several applications of continued fractions from a variety of levels and fields of mathematics. Studies begin with looking at a number of properties that pertain to continued fractions and then move on to show how applications of continued fractions is relevant to high school level mathematics including approximating irrational numbers and developing new ideas for understanding and solving quadratics equations. Focus then continues to more advanced applications such as those used in the studies of number theory …

Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In Calculus we learned that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …
Assessing Student Understanding While Solving Linear Equations Using Flowcharts And Algebraic Methods, Edima Umanah
Assessing Student Understanding While Solving Linear Equations Using Flowcharts And Algebraic Methods, Edima Umanah
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Solving linear equations has often been taught procedurally by performing inverse operations until the variable in question is isolated. Students do not remember which operation to undo first because they often memorize operations with no understanding of the underlying meanings. The study was designed to help assess how well students are able to solve linear equations. Furthermore, the lesson is designed to help students identify solving linear equations in more than one-way. The following research questions were addressed in this study: Does the introduction of multiple ways to think about linear equations lead students to flexibly incorporate appropriate representations/strategies in …

Analogues Between Leibniz's Harmonic Triangle And Pascal's Arithmetic Triangle, Lacey Taylor James
Analogues Between Leibniz's Harmonic Triangle And Pascal's Arithmetic Triangle, Lacey Taylor James
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This paper will discuss the analogues between Leibniz's Harmonic Triangle and Pascal's Arithmetic Triangle by utilizing mathematical proving techniques like partial sums, committees, telescoping, mathematical induction and applying George Polya's perspective. The topics presented in this paper will show that Pascal's triangle and Leibniz's triangle both have hockey stick type patterns, patterns of sums within shapes, and have the natural numbers, triangular numbers, tetrahedral numbers, and pentatope numbers hidden within. In addition, this paper will show how Pascal's Arithmetic Triangle can be used to construct Leibniz's Harmonic Triangle and show how both triangles relate to combinatorics and arithmetic through the …

Simple Groups, Progenitors, And Related Topics, Angelica Baccari
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The foundation of the work of this thesis is based around the involutory progenitor and the finite homomorphic images found therein. This process is developed by Robert T. Curtis and he defines it as 2^{*n} :N {pi w | pi in N, w} where 2^{*n} denotes a free product of n copies of the cyclic group of order 2 generated by involutions. We repeat this process with different control groups and a different array of possible relations to discover interesting groups, such as sporadic, linear, or unitary groups, to name a few. Predominantly this work was produced from transitive groups …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Abstract
A progenitor developed by Robert T. Curtis is a type of infinite groups formed by the semi-direct product of a free group m∗n and a transitive permutation group of degree n. To produce finite homomorphic images we had to add relations to the progenitor of the form 2∗n : N. In this thesis we have investigated several permutations progenitors and monomials, 2∗12 : S4, 2∗12 : S4 × 2, 2∗13 : (13 : 4), 2∗30 : ((2• : 3) : 5), 2∗13 :13,2∗13 :(13:2),2∗13 :(13:S3),53∗2 :m (13:4),7∗8 :m (32 :8),and 53∗4 :m (13 : 4). We have discovered that …

Abstract
In this project, we searched for new constructions and symmetric presentations of important groups, nonabelian simple groups, their automorphism groups, or groups that have these as their factor groups. My target nonabelian simple groups included sporadic groups, linear groups, and alternating groups. In addition, we discovered finite groups as homomorphic images of progenitors and proved some of their isomorphism type and original symmetric presentations. In this thesis we found original symmeric presentations of M12, J1 and the simplectic groups S(4,4) and S(3,4) on various con- trol groups. Using the technique of double coset enumeration we constucted J2 as a …

Investigation Of Finite Groups Through Progenitors, Charles Baccari
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The goal of this presentation is to find original symmetric presentations of finite groups. It is frequently the case, that progenitors factored by appropriate relations produce simple and even sporadic groups as homomorphic images. We have discovered two of the twenty-six sporadic simple groups namely, M12, J1 and the Lie type group Suz(8). In addition several linear and classical groups will also be presented. We will present several progenitors including: 2*12: 22 x (3 : 2), 2*11: PSL2(11), 2*5: (5 : 4) which have produced the homomorphic images: …
An Introduction To Lie Algebra, Amanda Renee Talley
An Introduction To Lie Algebra, Amanda Renee Talley
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
An (associative) algebra is a vector space over a field equipped with an associative, bilinear multiplication. By use of a new bilinear operation, any associative algebra morphs into a nonassociative abstract Lie algebra, where the new product in terms of the given associative product, is the commutator. The crux of this paper is to investigate the commutator as it pertains to the general linear group and its subalgebras. This forces us to examine properties of ring theory under the lens of linear algebra, as we determine subalgebras, ideals, and solvability as decomposed into an extension of abelian ideals, and nilpotency, …
Simple And Semi-Simple Artinian Rings, Ulyses Velasco
Simple And Semi-Simple Artinian Rings, Ulyses Velasco
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the road towards the structure of simple and semi-simple Artinian rings. We refer to these structure theorems as the Wedderburn-Artin theorems. On this journey, we will discuss R-modules, the Jacobson radical, Artinian rings, nilpotency, idempotency, and more. Once we reach our destination, we will examine some implications of these theorems. As a fair warning, no ring will be assumed to be commutative, or to have unity. On that note, the reader should be familiar with the basic findings from Group Theory and Ring Theory.
An Introduction To Boolean Algebras, Amy Schardijn
An Introduction To Boolean Algebras, Amy Schardijn
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the topic of Boolean algebras. In order to build intuitive understanding of the topic, research began with the investigation of Boolean algebras in the area of Abstract Algebra. The content of this initial research used a particular notation. The ideas of partially ordered sets, lattices, least upper bounds, and greatest lower bounds were used to define the structure of a Boolean algebra. From this fundamental understanding, we were able to study atoms, Boolean algebra isomorphisms, and Stone’s Representation Theorem for finite Boolean algebras. We also verified and proved many properties involving Boolean algebras and related structures.
We …

Geometric Constructions From An Algebraic Perspective, Betzabe Bojorquez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Many topics that mathematicians study at times seem so unrelated such as Geometry and Abstract Algebra. These two branches of math would seem unrelated at first glance. I will try to bridge Geometry and Abstract Algebra just a bit with the following topics. We can be sure that after we construct our basic parallel and perpendicular lines, bisected angles, regular polygons, and other basic geometric figures, we are actually constructing what in geometry is simply stated and accepted, because it will be proven using abstract algebra. Also we will look at many classic problems in Geometry that are not possible …
Elliptic Curves, Trinity Mecklenburg
Elliptic Curves, Trinity Mecklenburg
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The main focus of this paper is the study of elliptic curves, non-singular projective curves of genus 1. Under a geometric operation, the rational points E(Q) of an elliptic curve E form a group, which is a finitely-generated abelian group by Mordell’s theorem. Thus, this group can be expressed as the finite direct sum of copies of Z and finite cyclic groups. The number of finite copies of Z is called the rank of E(Q).
From John Tate and Joseph Silverman we have a formula to compute the rank of curves of the form …

Unique Prime Factorization Of Ideals In The Ring Of Algebraic Integers Of An Imaginary Quadratic Number Field, Nolberto Rezola
Unique Prime Factorization Of Ideals In The Ring Of Algebraic Integers Of An Imaginary Quadratic Number Field, Nolberto Rezola
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The ring of integers is a very interesting ring, it has the amazing property that each of its elements may be expressed uniquely, up to order, as a product of prime elements. Unfortunately, not every ring possesses this property for its elements. The work of mathematicians like Kummer and Dedekind lead to the study of a special type of ring, which we now call a Dedekind domain, where even though unique prime factorization of elements may fail, the ideals of a Dedekind domain still enjoy the property of unique prime factorization into a product of prime ideals, up to order …

Algebra 1 Students’ Ability To Relate The Definition Of A Function To Its Representations, Sarah A. Thomson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
One hundred high school Algebra students from a southern California school participated in this study to provide information on students’ ability to relate the definition of function to its representations. The goals of the study were (1) to explore the extent to which students are able to distinguish between representations of functions/non-functions; (2) to compare students’ ability to distinguish between familiar/unfamiliar representations of functions/non-functions; (3) to explore the extent to which students are able to apply the definition of function to verify function representations; and (4) to explore the extent to which students are able to provide an adequate definition …

Symmetric Presentations Of Non-Abelian Simple Groups, Leonard B. Lamp
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to show constructions of some of the sporadic groups such as the Mathieu group, M12, J1, Projective Special Linear groups, PSL(2,8), and PSL(2,11), Unitary group U(3,3) and many other non-abelian simple groups. Our purpose is to find all simple non-abelian groups as homomorphic images of permutation or monomial progenitors, as well grasping a deep understanding of group theory and extension theory to determine groups up to isomorphisms. The progenitor, developed by Robert T. Curtis, is a semi-direct product of the following form: P≅2*n: N = {πw | π …
