A proper short exact sequence in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be t-pure if φ(A) is a topologically pure subgroup of B, that is, if for all positive integers n. We establish conditions under which t-pure exact sequences split and determine those locally compact abelian groups K ⊕ D (where K is compactly generated and D is discrete) which are t-pure injective or t-pure projective. Problem 12.82 of the Kourovka Notebook asks for all ordered pairs (n,m) such that the symmetric group Sn embeds in Sm as a maximal subgroup. One family of such pairs is obtained when m=n+1. Kalužnin and Klin [L.A. Kalužnin, M.H. Klin, Certain maximal subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups, Math. Sb. 87 (1972) 91–121] and Halberstadt [E. Halberstadt, On certain maximal subgroups of symmetric or alternating groups, Math. Z. 151 (1976) 117–125] provided an additional infinite family. François Viète is considered the father both of modern algebra and of modern cryptanalysis. The paper outlines Viète's major contributions in these two mathematical fields and argues that, despite an obvious parallel between them, there is an essential difference. Viète's 'new algebra' relies on his reform of the classical method of analysis and synthesis, in particular on a new conception of analysis and the introduction of a new formalism. Injective Modules And Prime Ideals Of Universal Enveloping Algebras, Jorg Feldvoss

In this paper we study injective modules over universal enveloping algebras of finite-dimensional Lie algebras over fields of arbitrary characteristic. Most of our results are dealing with fields of prime characteristic but we also elaborate on some of their analogues for solvable Lie algebras over fields of characteristic zero. It turns out that analogous results in both cases are often quite similar and resemble those familiar from commutative ring theory.

In this paper, we study the group Pext(C,A) for locally compact abelian (LCA) groups A and C. Sufficient conditions are established for Pext(C,A) to coincide with the first Ulm subgroup of Ext(C,A). Some structural information on pure injectives in the category of LCA groups is obtained. Letting K denote the class of LCA groups which can be written as the topological direct sum of a compactly generated group and a discrete group, we determine the groups G in K which are pure injective in the category of LCA groups. Let G=〈X〉be an absolutely irreducible subgroup of GL(d, K), and let F be a proper subfield of the finite field K. We present a practical algorithm to decide constructively whether or not G is conjugate to a subgroup of GL(d, F).K×, where K× denotes the centre of GL(d, K). If the derived group of G also acts absolutely irreducibly, then the algorithm is Las Vegas and costs O(|X|d3+d2log|F|) arithmetic operations in K. This work forms part of a recognition project based on Aschbacher’s classification of maximal subgroups of GL(d, K).

Formal power series in N non-commuting indeterminates can be considered as a counterpart of functions of one variable holomorphic at 0, and some of their properties are described in terms of coefficients. However, really fruitful analysis begins when one considers for them evaluations on N-tuples of n × n matrices (with n = 1, 2, . . .) or operators on an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space. "Transition systems pervade much of computer science. This article outlines the beginnings of a general theory of specification languages for transition systems. More specifically, transition systems are generalised to coalgebras. Specification languages together with their proof systems, in the following called (logical or modal) calculi, are presented by the associated classes of algebras (e.g., classical propositional logic by Boolean algebras). Stone duality will be used to relate the logics and their coalgebraic semantics."
