One of the most important obstacles in renal transplantation is the rejection phenomenon. In spite of the developments in medical technology and immunology, early diagnosis of rejection and specific immunosuppression of the immune attack against the graft have not yet been totally accomplished. Lymphocyte cross-matching (LCM), a test to detect the presence of preformed antibodies in the donor against the recipient, is a practical and cheap method and is performed at almost all renal transplantation centers before transplantation. In this study, we searched for the relation between the posttransplant LCM status and graft survival. LCM was positive in 7 patients …

ESWL is an effective and noninvasive method of treatment for patients with urinary stones. However, especially in the treatment of larger stones impact of the small stone particles in the lower ureter (steinstrasse) is a serious complication that affects the result of the procedure. If the renal unit has not been catheterized before the ESWL procedure, removal of these particles by open surgical or endoscopic intervention within a very short time is mandatory. A total of 1576 renal unit were treated by ESWL with the Dornier MPL 9000 lithotripter from April 1991 to April 1995. Steinstrasse was observved in 81 …

The effect of zinc salts is defined by several studies. The aim of this study is to investigate how the short period toothbrushing with equal volumes of a toothpaste containing 0.75% zinccitrate effects the salivary zinc levels over a period of 7 hours. In our study a significant increase in zinc measurements was observed 5 minutes after toothbrushing. Although 7 th hour measurements were higher than 0 hour measurements; these values were found approximately similar to intial control measurements. This result shows that the amount of zinc passed by toothpaste to saliva completely disappeared at the end of 7 th …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Cartilage grafts are widely used in maxillo-facial reconstruction operations. There are some difficulties of conventional suture techniques in these operations such as long operation time, mobilization, shifting, and implantation or fixation of small pieces of cartilage. Therefore the advantages of a tissue adhesive over conventional suture techniques became evident in these operations. Butyl 2-Cyanoacrylate (B2-CA) is one of the least histotoxic cyanoacrylate derivatives and is used as a tissue adhesive. In this study, B2-CA was compared with conventional suture techniques in securing rabbit auricular cartilage autografts. Sutures were used in the left control ears and B2-CA was used in the …

Cryoglobulinemia has been reported rarely to cause false elevation in platelet and/or leukocyte counts due to temperature-dependent protein precipitates that interpreted as blood cells at room temperature. Upon heating to 37°C, these blood counts decrease to normal levels as cryoproteins dissolve. Here, we report two cases with this rare phenomenon that may lead to inappropriate investigations in clinical practice and have diagnostic significance when kept in mind.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Diabetic patients show hemobiological abnormalities such as increased platelet adhesiveness, platelet hyperaggregability, decreased platelet half life, hemorheological abnormalities and altered fibrinolysis, perhaps contributing to a procoagulative state. Gliclazide, a novel sulfonylurea in routine clinical use, was thought to have effects on prostanoid release and platelet function. We studied thromboxane A 2 metabolite; serum thomboxane B 2 (TXB 2 ) and the prostacyclin metabolite, 6-keto-PGF 1\alpha to assess the efficacy of gliclazide on these parameters. Two groups of age and sex matched type II diabetics were examined in the study. There were 16 subjects in each group (F:M= 10/6). The study …
