The Effects Of Nitric Oxide On Rat Stomach Injury Induced By Acetylsalicylic Acid, Murat Yağmurca, Muharrem Uçar, Ersi̇n Fadillioğlu, Hasan Erdoğan, Feral Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, aspirin), which is one of the most frequently used drugs in the world, causes severe gastric mucosal injury. Nitric oxide (NO) is synthesized from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NOS can be inhibited by Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and stimulated by supplementing the diet with L-arginine (L-Arg). The aim of this study was to investigate the role of NO on gastric mucosal injury induced by ASA. Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into seven groups: control, ASA, ASA+L-NAME, ASA+L-Arg, ASA+L-Arg+L-NAME, only L-NAME, and only L-Arg groups. After administration of the drugs, the rats …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We present herein a case in which salmonella infected a pre-existing chronic subdural hematoma. A one-year-old male infant was admitted to our hospital with complaints of loss of consciousness, seizure, and left hemiparesis. Irrigation and drainage through two burr-holes were performed to the left frontoparietal region with the diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma according to CT findings. Operative findings revealed an infected subdural hematoma. Salmonella typhi grew in cultures of the subdural hematoma. According to the result of the culture antibiogram, ciprofloxacin therapy was initiated. Because of continued lethargy six days after the operation, a contrasted MRI was performed. The …

Papillary Carcinoma On The Thyroglossal Cyst Wall, Ş. Si̇nan Kürkçüoğlu, Selahatti̇n Genç, Ümi̇t Tunçel, Funda Demi̇rağ

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Thyroglossal duct cysts are usually located at the midline of the neck. While the coexistence of a carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct cyst is extremely rare, papillary carcinoma represents almost 80% of the cases. Its treatment is usually decided based on postoperative histopathological examinations. Although the Sistrunk procedure is often seen as adequate, the treatment of thyroglossal duct cysts remains controversial. In the present study, the Sistrunk procedure was used to excise a thyroglossal duct cyst in a 24-year-old female. Papillary carcinoma was confirmed with the histopathological examination following the surgery. We did not perform thyroidectomy, neck dissection or radioactive …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Secretory breast carcinoma is a rare form of invasive breast carcinoma constituting less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. Since insufficient data have been compiled about this rare tumor, it is important to report every case of secretory breast carcinoma in an effort to better understand the histopathological and clinical characteristics of this tumor and to contemplate the most appropriate therapeutic approach. In this report, two adult female patients over 50 years of age and a 14-year-old girl were reviewed with a detailed immunohistochemical work-up to define the clinical and molecular characteristics of secretory breast carcinoma.
