To determine pyrazinamide (PZA) monoresistance in clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) isolated in hospitals in and around İzmir. Materials and methods: The study was performed between 2004 and 2009 with 150 streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampicin, and ethambutol susceptible MTBC clinical strains isolated in the university hospitals of İzmir and Manisa. The PZA susceptibility of the isolates was determined by the BACTEC 460 TB test. Results: The results indicated that resistance to PZA was present in 5 (3.3%) of the 150 MTBC isolates susceptible to all primary drugs except PZA. Conclusion: It is not essential to perform PZA susceptibility tests …

Investigation Of The Protective Effects Of L-Carnitine And L-Arginine On Cardiovascular Changes Induced By Acth And Dexamethasone In Rabbits, Bi̇rkan Topçu, Metehan Uzun

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the protective effects of L-carnitine on cardiovascular changes that may occur in rabbits treated with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and dexamethasone (DEX). Materials and methods: Rabbits of equal weight were divided into 7 groups with 6 animals in each. Blood samples were collected from all groups on days 1, 7, and 14, and blood pressure values and ECG monitoring were recorded. Nitric oxide (NO), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), and troponin I (TnI) levels were determined in blood samples. Heart rate, QT, and corrected QT (QTc) values were calculated from ECG records. Results: The QT and QTc times were prolonged …

The Effects Of An Adaptive Directional Beam Microphone On The Mismatch Negativity Responses Of Cochlear Implant Users In Noise, Asuman Erdoğan, Ferda Akdaş Jan 2013

The Effects Of An Adaptive Directional Beam Microphone On The Mismatch Negativity Responses Of Cochlear Implant Users In Noise, Asuman Erdoğan, Ferda Akdaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the effects of noise on mismatch negativity (MMN) responses and the possible benefits of an adaptive directional BEAM microphone in noise during MMN recordings, and to compare the cochlear implant-evoked potential results with normal hearing subjects. Materials and methods: /da/ and /di/ speech stimuli were used to elicit MMN responses in 11 Freedom cochlear implant users and in 11 normal hearing subjects. Speech noise was delivered at 80 dB sound pressure level (-10 dB signal-to-noise ratio). All subjects were tested in quiet and noisy conditions. To compare the microphone effects, MMN responses for the cochlear implant group were …
