The question how fish oil (FO) and soybean oil (SO) change the state of antioxidant and the lipid peroxidation in liver and plasma of rats and the protective role of vitamin E were investigated. Six-week-old forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups. Chronic hepatitis is a clinical and pathological syndrome, which has several causes and it is characterized by varying degrees of hepatocellular necrosis and inflammation. Several systems have been proposed to evaluate the diagnosis, grading and staging of chronic hepatitis. A histologic activity index (HAI) has been developed which generates a numerical score for liver biopsy specimens obtained from patients with chronic hepatitis. Endothelin-1 levels in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women were determined serially to investigate the correlation between renal function tests and the severity markers of preeclampsia. Plasma endothelin-1 levels were determined in 45 serial plasma samples from 15 pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and in 43 plasma samples from 25 women with uncomplicated pregnancies retrospectively. Renal function tests, complete blood counts, urinalysis and blood pressure measurements were performed during antenatal follow-ups of these patients. Migraine is considered to be a functional neurological disorder. For several years cerebral blood flow studies have been fueling the controversy surrounding the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Tc 99m-HM PAO SPECT brain imaging was performed during the headache-free period of 29 migraine sufferers (24 without aura, 5 with aura). The findings were compared with those of an age-and sex-matched control group of 17 people. The SPECT images revealed clear interhemispheric asymmetry in the right frontal, temporal and occipital lobes of the brain in the study group. Slight hypoperfusion was observed in patients who had interictal EEG abnormalities.

To determine serum D(-)-lactate and NO levels in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia. 22 patients (12 with acute mesenteric ischemia, 10 with bowel obstruction) and 12 control patients who were operated due to goitre. Stress activates the hypotalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis, increases circulating glucocorticoids, and is associated with alterations in immune functions. Nosocomial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized children, and the urinary tract is one of the most common sites of these infections. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 1,221 children discharged with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) from July 1, 1991 to June 30, 1994. Of the 1,221 UTIs, there were 137 (11.2%) cases of nosocomial UTI (NUTI) in 136 patients. NUTI accounted for 0.28% of all discharges (48, 382 patients) at a single institution over the 3-year period studied. There were 75 girls and 61 boys. The mean age was 4.4 years …

We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. Urinary-tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases in children; however, the significance of combined infection in the pathogenesis of UTI remains uncertain. Of 48,382 patients discharged from Texas Children's Hospital from July 1, 1991, to June 30, 1994, 1,221 (2.5%) were discharged with a diagnosis of UTI. We retrospectively reviewed the files of these 1,221 patients to assess for concomitant infections and causative microorganisms in patients with first-time UTI, no urologic abnormalities, and no other major diagnoses. Pheochromocytoma is known as chromaffin cell tumor frequently originated from adrenal medulla and results in hypersecretion of catecholamines (1). Typical clinical findings include headache, palpitation, excessive sweating and paroxysmal hypertension, which persistently maintains in 60% of the cases. Generally, paroxysm or attacks are often, but they can appear with intervals of weeks or months (1, 2). We investigated the effect of antibiotic or G-CSF plus antibiotic therapy given to E. coli septic rats. In our study, 80 rats were inoculated transperitoneally with 1 ml of a solution containing 10 7 colony forming units per milliliter of E. coli. Rats were divided into four treatment groups before being inoculaded with E. coli in a random fashion. Since chronic myloid leukemia (CML) has a genetic base, we aimed to seek the genetic instability of patients by micronucleus analysis, a mutation screening test which was applied by cytokinesis-blocked (CB) method. Tumor imaging with myocardial perfusion agents has been a focal point for researchers. A kinetic study with 99m Technetium- methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) was performed to evaluate the tumor uptake of this radiopharmaceutical in lung cancer. Thirty-five patients with lung cancer were studied. In 21 (60%) patients, there were regions of high uptake of 99m Tc-MIBI in the lesions. Heart/tumor (H/T), heart/lung (H/L) and tumor/lung (T/L) ratios were obtained. H/T and H/L ratios were 1.66±0.22 and 2.10±0.28 in 2-3 min, and 1.69±0.25 and 2.14±0.27 in 29-30 min respectively.
