Since leukoplakia is a premalignant condition, it is evident that an effective means of control would contribute to reducing the mortality and morbidity of oral cancer. The reactivity of free radicals and singlet oxygen is believed to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of many degenerative diseases including carcinogenesis. Reactive free radicals may damage cells by induction of lipid peroxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids. Buege and Aust's method was used for lipid peroxidation analysis. One way of estimating free radical activity and lipid peroxidation is to determine the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the body fluids. MDA concentration …

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important nosocomial pathogen. The prevalence of MRSA in many countries is increasing and, in some hospitals, more than half of all S. aureus disease isolates are MRSA. MRSA strains are becoming increasingly multiresistant, and have recently developed resistance to vancomycin, which has been used successfully to treat MRSA for more than 30 years. In-vitro determination of resistance patterns of S. aureus is critical in terms of administering suitable antimicrobial treatments. The objective of this study was to identify the frequency of MRSA from various clinical samples and resistance patterns against various antibiotics used broadly …

The imbalance between coagulation and fibrinolysis leads to vascular complications in diabetics. In our study, we have investigated the effects of the protein C-thrombomodulin system as a cause of diabetic vascular complications. Whereas PC-Ag levels were lower, thrombomodulin (TM) levels of diabetics were higher than that of the controls (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). Furthermore, patients were divided into three groups according to their urinary albumin excretion (UAE). Group 1, 2 and 3 consisted of 27 patients with UAC £ 30 µg/ml, 16 patients with UAC in range 30-140 µg/ml, 3 patients with UAC >140 µg/ml, respectively. Plasma PC-Ag levels were significantly decreased in group 1 and 2 with respect to controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Plasma TM concentrations were significantly increased in group 1, 2 and 3 compared with the control group (P < 0.001, P < 0.01, P < 0.01). Patients were also divided into two groups according to the duration of their illness; patients whose diabetic age < 10 years (Group A) and whose diabetic age > 10 years (Group B). In both groups, PC-Ag levels were lower and TM levels higher than that of the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.01; P < 0.001, P < 0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference between group A and B in PC-Ag levels (P > 0.50) but a significant difference in TM levels (P < 0.001).

Quality Control Studies On Conventional Carbamazepine Tablets Available On The Turkish Drug Market, Tansel Çomoğlu, Nurşi̇n Gönül

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a widely used antiepileptic drug. It is used to control grandmal seizure as well as in the treatment of neuralgia. The drug is characterised by slow and irregular gastrointestinal absorption due to its low water solubility. In clinics, for conventional dosage forms of CBZ, single daily dosing is insufficient; effective CBZ level is provided by multiple drug administration. Multiplicity of dosage causes inconsistent plasma CBZ levels leading to side effects because of narrow therapeutic and toxic levels. In this study, quality controls of different conventional CBZ tablets which are commercially available on the Turkish drug market were …

Megadose Methylprednisolone For Childhood Idiopathic Trombocytopenic Purpura (Itp), Şi̇nasi̇ Özsoylu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder. Decreased platelet survival is the main pathogenesis, which is related to platelet antibodies (APA). The levels of these antibodies are correlated with relapse and remission which was shown for the first time by our group. Although APA levels decrease in remission they do not disappear as we have shown. Among the several appraches to ITP treatment, oral megadose methylprednisolone is found to be the cheapest and most effective one. For oral MDMP treatment, admission of the patients is not required and there is some evidence that chronic ITP could be prevented by …

Estimation Of Sensitivity And Specificity For Clustered Data, Yasemi̇n Genç, Derya Gökmen, Ersöz Tüccar, Banu Yağmurlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The most commonly used measurements for evaluating the accuracy of diagnostic tests in binary data are sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity refers to the ability of a test to detect patients with some specific disease. Specificity describes how well test abnormality is restricted to those persons who have the disease in question. The variance estimators of these measurements are usually obtained using a binomial estimator, although there are several other methods. However, under certain conditions more than one observation can be taken from a subject and analyses are performed on these observations. This type of data structure is called "clustered data". …
