Synthesis And Characterization Of Molybdenum Disulfide/Conducting Polymer Nanocomposite Materials For Supercapacitor Applications, Turki S. Alamro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The needs for energy storage devices have kindled researchers desire to explore and synthesize nanocomposite materials. Storing energy efficiently, effectively and sustainably are the science and engineering communities’ highest priorities to develop electrochemical energy storage devices. Supercapacitors have become power solution not only because supercapacitors can bridge the gap between the traditional capacitors and rechargeable batteries but also because of many other advantages which include extraordinary electrochemical properties, wide working-temperature range, cost effective, safe operation and long/stable cycle life. They have higher current pules than batteries due to the mechanism of charging and discharging. Batteries charging and discharging via chemical …
Numerical Simulation Of Viscoelastic Flow In Micro/Nanochannels, Lanju Mei
Numerical Simulation Of Viscoelastic Flow In Micro/Nanochannels, Lanju Mei
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Micro/Nanofluidic devices often involve use of biological fluids or polymeric solutions that cannot be simply treated as Newtonian fluids. The numerical simulation for the complex fluids at micro/nanoscale presents a significant computational challenge, and the inclusion of electrokinetic body force further increases the complexity. Specifically, the well-known High Weissenberg Number Problem (HWNP) has become a challenge for the numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluid. This dissertation is aimed to develop a numerical tool to simulate the behavior of viscoelastic fluid in the micro/nanochannel. The most popular log-conformation reformulation to solve the HWNP is presented and implemented in a finite volume scheme. …
The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez
The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Nanoscale transport using the kinesin-microtubule (MT) biomolecular system has been successfully used in a wide range of nanotechnological applications including self-assembly, nanofluidic transport, and biosensing. Most of these applications use the ‘gliding motility geometry’, in which surface-adhered kinesin motors attach and propel MT filaments across the surface, a process driven by ATP hydrolysis. It has been demonstrated that active assembly facilitated by these biomolecular motors results in complex, non-equilibrium nanostructures currently unattainable through conventional self-assembly methods. In particular, MTs functionalized with biotin assemble into rings and spools upon introduction of streptavidin and/or streptavidin-coated nanoparticles. Upon closer examination of these structures …
Electrochemical Modification Of Granular Activated Carbon And Carbon Nanofibers To Determine Effect On Adsorption, Jose E. Martinez Sanchez
Electrochemical Modification Of Granular Activated Carbon And Carbon Nanofibers To Determine Effect On Adsorption, Jose E. Martinez Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Granular activated carbon and carbon nanofiber samples were tested as is and electrochemically modified to determine the effect on adsorption. An electrochemical cell was used to modify the carbon samples. The samples were then used in bench bottle tests with 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), brilliant blue (BB) dye, and methylene blue (MB) dye solutions and sampled over time intervals. An ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer was used to analyze the results of the bottle bench tests. The results indicated that electrochemically modified coal-based carbons’ adsorption were improved 25% over the adsorption of the as is carbon samples prior to modification. The electrochemical modification increased adsorption …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Point-of-care (POC) tests are a reliable, portable, easy to use, and more affordable alternative to regular laboratory diagnostic tests. They bypass the necessity of expensive equipment, human labor, and technical expertise. The personal glucose meter (PGM) is a POC device that measures glucose levels in blood. Lately, the PGM have been used as a tool to detect other bioanalytes in different applications. There are two analytes which POC detection would be beneficial for patients: creatinine and tacrolimus. Creatinine is used to calculate glomerular filtration rate, a measurement of kidneys function that can help to diagnose kidney failure, and other nephropathies. …

Axitinib Loaded Plga Nanoparticles For Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Priya P. Narvekar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite of all the research going on for the treatment of ocular diseases, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains one of the serious vision threatening disease worldwide. Choroidal neovascularization, a pathophysiological characteristic of wet AMD, is the growth of anomalous blood vessels in the eye choroidal layer. Neovascularization is a key factor in AMD and thus anti-angiogenic therapy is beneficial in reducing the development of new abnormal blood vessels to prevent progression of AMD. Axitinib, multi-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is a small molecule that works by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFR) and platelet derived growth factor receptors (PDGFR) responsible …

Bimetallic nanoparticles comprised of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) were investigated for the removal of an azo dye contaminant in water. Morphology (core shell and alloy) and metal molar ratio (Ni2Fe10, Ni5Fe10, and Ni10Fe10) were tested as key nanoparticle properties. The shelf life of the nanoparticles was tested over a 3-week period, and the effect of initial nanoparticle concentration on dye removal was evaluated. The highest initial nanoparticle concentration (1000 mg/L) showed consistent Orange G removal and the greatest extent of dye removal, as compared to the other tested concentrations (i.e., 750 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 250 mg/L) for the …

Analysis Of Dynamic Behaviour Of A Tensioned Carbon Nanotube In Thermal And Pressurized Environments, Ahmed Yinusa, Gbeminiyi Sobamowo
Analysis Of Dynamic Behaviour Of A Tensioned Carbon Nanotube In Thermal And Pressurized Environments, Ahmed Yinusa, Gbeminiyi Sobamowo
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
In this paper, the dynamic behaviour of a tensioned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in thermal and pressurized environments is investigated analytically. With the applications of Bernoulli-Euler and thermal elasticity mechanics theories, the governing equation of motion are developed and solved using Laplace and Fourier transforms. The results of the close form solution in this work are in excellent agreements with past results in literature. From the parametric studies, it is established that as the magnitude of the pressure distribution at the surface increases, the deflection associated with the nanotube increases at any mode of vibration. However, a corresponding increase in …

Å-Indentation For Non-Destructive Elastic Moduli Measurements Of Supported Ultra-Hard Ultra-Thin Films And Nanostructures, Filippo Cellini, Yang Gao, Elisa Riedo
Publications and Research
During conventional nanoindentation measurements, the indentation depths are usually larger than 1–10 nm, which hinders the ability to study ultra-thin films (<10 >nm) and supported atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we discuss the development of modulated Å-indentation to achieve sub-Å indentations depths during force-indentation measurements while also imaging materials with nanoscale resolution. Modulated nanoindentation (MoNI) was originally invented to measure the radial elasticity of multi-walled nanotubes. w, by using extremely small amplitude oscillations (<<1 Å) at high frequency, and stiff cantilevers, we show how modulated nano/Å-indentation (MoNI/ÅI) enables non-destructive measurements of the contact stiffness and indentation modulus of ultra-thin ultra-stiff films, including CVD diamond films (~1000 GPa stiffness), as well as the transverse modulus of 2D materials. Our analysis demonstrates that in presence of a standard laboratory noise floor, the signal to noise ratio of MoNI/ÅI implemented with a commercial atomic force microscope (AFM) is such that a dynamic range of 80 dB –– achievable with commercial Lock-in amplifiers –– is sufficient to observe superior indentation curves, having indentation depths as small as 0.3 Å, resolution in indentation <0.05 Å, and in normal load <0.5 nN. Being implemented on a standard AFM, this method has the potential for a broad applicability.

Interactions Between Dislocations And Three-Dimensional Annealing Twins In Face Centered Cubic Metals, Yanxiang Liang, Xiaofang Yang, Mingyu Gong, Guisen Liu, Qing Liu, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Annealing twins often form in metals with a face centered cubic structure during thermal and mechanical processing. Here, we conducted molecular dynamic (MD) simulations for copper and aluminum to study the interaction processes between {1 1 1}1/2 <1 1 0> dislocations and a three-dimensional annealing twin. Twin boundaries are characterized with Σ3{1 1 1} coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) and Σ3{1 1 2} incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs). MD results revealed that dislocation-ITB interactions affect slip transmission for a dislocation crossing CTBs, facilitating the nucleation of Lomer dislocation.

Recent Developments In Surface/Interface Modulation And Structure-Performance Relationship Of Cathode Catalysts For Li-Air Batteries, Rui Gao, Jun-Kai Wang, Zhong-Bo Hu, Xiang-Feng Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-air battery has been considered to be one of the most promising secondary battery systems because of its high energy density. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the cathode, and the high overpotential, poor cycle stability and low rate capacity have severely blocked the development and application of Li-air battery. One of the effective strategies to alleviate these issues is to develop cathode catalysts for Li-air batteries. The design and development of bifunctional cathode catalysts with high activity and efficiency on both ORR and OER is highly desired for Li-air …

Development Of A Counter-Flow Thermal Gradient Microfluidic Device, Shayan Davani
Doctoral Dissertations
This work presents a novel counter-flow design for thermal stabilization of microfluidic thermal reactors. In these reactors, precise control of temperature of the liquid sample is achieved by moving the liquid sample through the thermal zones established ideally through the conduction in the solid material of the device. The goal here is to establish a linear thermal distribution when there is no flow and to minimize the temperature change at flow condition. External convection as well as internal flowinduced effects influence the prescribed thermal distribution. The counter-flow thermal gradient device developed in this study is capable of both stabilizing the …

Because coronary artery calcified plaques can hinder or eliminate stent deployment, interventional cardiologists need a better way to plan interventions, which might include one of the many methods for calcification modification (e.g., atherectomy). We are imaging calcifications with intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT), which is the lone intravascular imaging technique with the ability to image the extent of a calcification, and using results to build vessel-specific finite element models for stent deployment. We applied methods to a large set of image data (>45 lesions and > 2,600 image frames) of calcified plaques, manually segmented by experts into calcified, lumen and …

Amorphous SiOC films were synthesized by magnetron sputtering at room temperature with/without radio frequency (RF) bias and further improved in terms of mechanical properties by ion irradiation. As-deposited SiOC films without RF bias exhibit catastrophic failure at a low stress and strain, which is ascribed to microstructural heterogeneities associated with the formation of voids during deposition, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. Ion irradiation unifies microstructure accompanied with eliminating the voids, resulting in a simultaneously increase in strength and plasticity (ultimate strength of 5–7 GPa and the strain to shear instability of over 20%). Homogeneous microstructures are demonstrated to ensure …

Blending organic semiconductors with insulating polymers has been known to be an effective way to overcome the disadvantages of single-component organic semiconductors for high-performance organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). We show that when a solution processable organic semiconductor (6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene, TIPS-pentacene) is blended with an insulating polymer (PS), morphological and structural characteristics of the blend films could be significantly influenced by the processing conditions like the spin coating time. Although vertical phase-separated structures (TIPS-pentacene-top/PS-bottom) were formed on the substrate regardless of the spin coating time, the spin time governed the growth mode of the TIPS-pentacene molecules that phase-separated and crystallized on the …

Nano-Biophysical Approaches For Assessing Nanoparticle Interactions With Biological Systems, Zachary Untracht
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding interactions between nanoparticles and biological systems is fundamental for the development of emerging nano-biotechnology applications. In this thesis, I present an investigation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles interactions with biomolecules in two separate studies. The first section of my thesis covers tracking and detection of ZnO nanoparticles using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). ZinkicideTM is a bactericidal ZnO nanoparticle which has been developed for agriculture. The characterization of Zinkicide in biological media and in solution has been difficult due to its high dispersibility and ultra-small size. SDS-PAGE is considered a golden standard for protein qualitative interpretations. In …

Developments Towards High-Flux Silica Nanosphere Substrates To Support Conforming Self-Assembled Gold Nanoparticle Monolayers For Applications In Size-Selective Filtration, Ryan Baker Vincent
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Hydrophobic thiol coated gold nanoparticles have recently been investigated for their ability to self-assemble into robust, ultra-thin, porous membranes at a liquid-vapor interface. Due to the well-ordered, hexagonal close-packed nanoparticle arrays formed during the self-assembly process, these 2-dimensional sheets have very well-defined pore structures and have been shown to span gaps of several microns under ideal conditions. While these self-assembled nanoparticle monolayers have very promising applications in the field of size-selective filtration due to their well-defined pore structure, they need to be supported by a rigid substrate with a large amount of open area. Here, tightly packed arrays of silica …

Ultrasound is a prominent nondestructive testing modality for the detection, localization, and sizing of defects in engineering materials. Often, inspectors analyze ultrasonic waveforms to determine if echoes, which stem from the scattering of ultrasound from a defect, exceed a threshold value. In turn, the initial selection of the threshold value is critical. In this letter, a time-dependent threshold or upper bound for the signal envelope is developed based on the statistics governing the scattering of ultrasound from microstructure. The utility of the time-dependent threshold is demonstrated using experiments conducted on sub-wavelength artificial defects. The results are shown to enhance current …

Cold working individual layers during additive manufacturing (AM) by mechanical surface treatments, such as peening, effectively “prints” an aggregate surface integrity that is referred to as a glocal (i.e., local with global implications) integrity. Printing a complex, pre-designed glocal integrity throughout the build volume is a feasible approach to improve functional performance while mitigating distortion. However, coupling peening with AM introduces new manufacturing challenges, namely thermal cancellation, whereby heat relaxes favorable residual stresses and work hardening when printing on a peened layer. Thus, this work investigates glocal integrity formation from cyclically coupling LENS® with laser peening on 420 stainless steel.

The Role Of Low-Level Image Features In The Affective Categorization Of Rapidly Presented Scenes, L. Jack Rhodes, Matthew Rios, Jacob M. Williams, Gonzalo Quinones, Prahalada K. Rao, Vladimir Miskovic
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
It remains unclear how the visual system is able to extract affective content from complex scenes even with extremely brief (< 100 millisecond) exposures. One possibility, suggested by findings in machine vision, is that low-level features such as unlocalized, two-dimensional (2-D) Fourier spectra can be diagnostic of scene content. To determine whether Fourier image amplitude carries any information about the affective quality of scenes, we first validated the existence of image category differences through a support vector machine (SVM) model that was able to discriminate our intact aversive and neutral images with ~ 70% accuracy using amplitude-only features as inputs. This model allowed us to confirm that scenes belonging to different affective categories could be mathematically distinguished on the basis of amplitude spectra alone. The next question is whether these same features are also exploited by the human visual system. Subsequently, we tested observers’ rapid classification of affective and neutral naturalistic scenes, presented briefly (~33.3 ms) and backward masked with synthetic textures. We tested categorization accuracy across three distinct experimental conditions, using: (i) original images, (ii) images having their amplitude spectra swapped within a single affective image category (e.g., an aversive image whose amplitude spectrum has been swapped with another aversive image) or (iii) images having their amplitude spectra swapped between affective categories (e.g., an aversive image containing the amplitude spectrum of a neutral image). Despite its discriminative potential, the human visual system does not seem to use Fourier amplitude differences as the chief strategy for affectively categorizing scenes at a glance. The contribution of image amplitude to affective categorization is largely dependent on interactions with the phase spectrum, although it is impossible to completely rule out a residual role for unlocalized 2-D amplitude measures.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) based photo-responsive devices include an OIHP active layer disposed between a cathode layer and an anode layer, and an electron extraction layer disposed between the cathode layer and the active layer. The electron extraction layer includes a layer of C60 directly disposed on the active layer. The active layer includes an organometal trihalide perovskite layer (e.g., CH3NH3PbI2X, where X includes at least one of Cl, Br, or I).
