Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Nanoplastic (NP) fouling remains a key challenge for ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, yet systematic, controlled comparisons of how membrane functional groups govern NP-membrane interactions are still limited. Here, the role of membrane surface chemistry was systematically investigated using a controlled comparative framework based on plasma-grafted polyethersulfone (PES) UF membranes tailored with structurally comparable methacrylate monomers bearing distinct terminal functionalities, including mono-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl succinate (MMES, -COOH), N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide (DMAPMA, -N(CH3)2), and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA, zwitterionic). Comprehensive characterisations supported successful surface grafting while preserving the membrane substructure. Fouling and separation were assessed using polystyrene (PS) NPs having different surface chemistries, i.e., PS, PS-COOH and …

Numerical Evaluation Of A Zero Poisson’S Ratio Structure In Μ-3d-Printed Self-Expanding Nitinol Stents, Farhana Yasmin, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Stenting is a minimally invasive treatment used in managing peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, clinical challenges persist, including in-stent thrombosis and restenosis, primarily driven by axial foreshortening or elongation and suboptimal balance between radial stiffness and flexibility inherent to conventional stent designs. This study proposes an innovative arrow-shaped geometry exhibiting zero Poisson’s ratio (ZPR) behaviour for 3D-printed self-expanding Nitinol stents. The complete stent deployment process was modelled using finite element analysis (FEA), including radial crimping and subsequent expansion to enable systematic parametric investigation while accounting for µ-3D printing constraints. Response surface methodology (RSM) rigorously evaluated mechanical performance, defining peak stress, …

From Thin Films To Energy Systems: A Perspective-Oriented Translational Framework For Deployable Functional Materials, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The translation of high-performance thin-film materials from lab-scale development to field-deployable energy systems remains a significant holdup in sustainable technology development. The real-world impact of functional thin films, nanocomposites, and emerging photovoltaic architectures is often limited by issues with scalability, interfacial reliability, environmental stability, and system-level integration, despite their excellent optical and electronic performance at the device level. A translational framework that is deployment-oriented and systematically connects interface-centric device integration, application-context validation, system-level performance feedback, and process-aware thin-film engineering has been presented in this article. Common structure-property-deployment trade-offs are identified through a comparative analysis of representative case domains, such as …

This review explains how composition design, processing routes and the resulting microstructures now combine to realize that potential. We first link phase selection in BCC-, FCC- and dual-phase RHEAs to atomic-size mismatch, mixing enthalpy and valence-electron concentration, and compare manufacturing paths ranging from arc melting to powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing and vapor deposition, showing how each reshapes grain structure and defect chemistry to improve high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance and irradiation tolerance. Computation-led tools—density-functional theory, calculation of phase diagrams and …

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been suggested for subsurface projects, including enhanced oil recovery (EOR), carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen storage, due to their small size, high surface energy, controlled surface properties, and significant effects on the underground formation properties. Silica is an excellent NP that efficiently modifies the surface properties of subsurface formations for incremental oil recovery and to derisk carbon and hydrogen leaks. However, the retention of injected NPs in a narrow area near the injection inlet can limit a project’s feasibility. In the present study, hydrophobic (hybrid) NPs were produced via silanization of silica NPs, and the …

Obtaining excellent wear resistance is critical for titanium alloys used as orthopedic implants. In this study, the β-type Ti-35Nb-5Cu- x Mo alloys (Ti355 x , x = 0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were fabricated by the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) method. In the meantime, the influence mechanism of Mo content on the microstructure and tribological properties was systematically investigated. The results show that all the LPBF-produced Ti355 x alloys exhibit a bimodal columnar-equiaxed grain structure, with Mo refining columnar grains and suppressing the α″ phase formation. Moreover, increasing the Mo content reduced the relative density, while enhancing the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Additive manufacturing of biomedical high-entropy alloys (BioHEAs) demands a combination of low elastic modulus, high strength, and damage tolerance, yet composition discovery remains largely empirical. Here, we establish a machine-learning framework that couples virtual screening with physical prototyping to link composition, deformation mechanism, and properties. Ensemble models for strength, elongation, and modulus were applied to screen Ti–Zr–Nb–Ta–Mo-centered quinary-to-septenary spaces (∼15 million compositions), revealing discrete performance islands anchored by a Ti–Zr backbone. A Zr-rich BCC alloy (Zr₃₉.₃Ti₁₉.₅Nb₁₇.₉Ta₁₆.₈Mo₆.₅) was identified and validated. In the as-cast state, it delivers ∼1.0 GPa yield strength, 22.3% elongation, and an 88 GPa elastic modulus; ductility originates …

Cellular Structure Mediated Dislocation Regulation In Additively Manufactured Refractory High Entropy Alloy, Changxi Liu, Lechun Xie, Lai-Chang Zhang, Liqiang Wang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A Ti1.5Nb1Ta0.5Zr1Mo0.5 (TNTZM) refractory high entropy alloy (HEA) with a cellular structure was successfully fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). Compression testing and cyclic deformation testing results revealed that, in the cellular structure, the cell walls could store dislocations. Furthermore, the local chemical order (LCO) plays a crucial role in controlling dislocations within the cell wall region. The LCO not only facilitates dislocation slip but also generates additional lattice distortion upon stress-induced LCO destruction to enable dislocation pinning. This work offers novel insights into the microstructure of additively manufactured refractory HEAs and uncovers a distinct dislocation regulation mechanism.

Characterising The Deformation Behaviour Of Human Tooth Enamel At The Microscale, Simona O'Brien

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Enamel plays an important role in tooth function. Optimal combinations of composition and structure endow enamel with unique mechanical properties that remain largely unexplored. Specifically, more detailed understanding of the loadbearing ability of enamel is needed to mimic it synthetically and to design next generation biocomposite materials. This research investigates the variables that influence deformation behaviour of tooth enamel in relation to its hierarchical structure. Initially, a new method was developed for preparing flat, finely polished tooth samples that were maintained in their normal hydrated state for nanoindentation testing. In contrast to conventional methods, which commonly utilise either inappropriate or …
