Crystalline Colloidal Arrays: Exploring Light-Matter Interactions, Haley W. Jones

All Dissertations

Understanding and manipulating quantum light-matter interactions, especially in the context of nanostructured environments, is highly critical for technological progress and inventive solutions in the fields of telecommunications, energy-efficient lighting, and cutting-edge quantum computing technologies. The fundamental interactions of photons with a surrounding environment directly impact the performance and efficiency of devices such as lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and quantum computing elements, which leverage the unique properties of confined structured environments. Since the late 1980s, the connection between a structured environment and the decay kinetics of an embedded fluorophore has been a highly debated and unresolved topic in the literature. More …

Advancing Selective-Area Doping And Annealing Strategies For High-Conductivity P-Type (Al)Gan System, Vincent Meyers Aug 2023

Advancing Selective-Area Doping And Annealing Strategies For High-Conductivity P-Type (Al)Gan System, Vincent Meyers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The material properties of the (Al)GaN system, including its high breakdown electric field and high electron mobility, make it a powerful candidate for next-generation high-power and high-frequency electronic devices. The success of this technology is dependent on the ability to form selective-area doped (SAD) p-type regions, which ideally may be accomplished by a combination of straightforward, low-cost ion implantation with Mg, the prevailing p-type dopant, and post-implant annealing. Obtaining high-conductivity p-type GaN following Mg-implantation remains a significant challenge and an area of ongoing research interest. Ion implantation induces lattice damage and creates charged point defects, including the donor-like VN, which …

Investigations Into Size And Surface Control Of Silicon Nanocrystals For Improved Optical Properties, James Donald Barnes Jun 2021

Investigations Into Size And Surface Control Of Silicon Nanocrystals For Improved Optical Properties, James Donald Barnes

Dissertations and Theses

The discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline porous silicon in 1990 led to extensive research into the mechanisms of the emergent properties, and optimization of these properties, for use in applications. The widespread use of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in commercial applications is currently limited by three main factors: 1) poor radiative recombination efficiency of the interband transition, 2) instability of the interband photoluminescence, and 3) a lack of scalable methods for producing Si NPs that are both highly crystalline and size monodisperse.

To address these limitations, this dissertation correlates changes in the photoluminescence properties of hydrogen passivated silicon …

Optical Properties Of Ultrathin In(Ga)As/Gaas And In(Ga)N/Gan Quantum Wells, Yurii Maidaniuk Dec 2020

Optical Properties Of Ultrathin In(Ga)As/Gaas And In(Ga)N/Gan Quantum Wells, Yurii Maidaniuk

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recently, structures based on ultrathin quantum wells (QWs) began to play a critical role in modern devices, such as lasers, solar cells, infrared photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. However, due to the lack of understanding of the formation mechanism of ultrathin QWs during the capping process, scientists and engineers cannot fully explore the potential of such structures. This study aims to investigate how structural parameters of ultrathin QWs affect their emission properties by conducting a systematic analysis of the optical properties of In(Ga)As/GaAs and In(Ga)N/GaN ultrathin QWs. Specifically, the analysis involved photoluminescence measurements combined with effective bandgap simulation, x-ray diffraction, and …

Exploration Of Efficient Scintillation Based On Inas Quantum Dots In A Gaas Matrix, Katherine Rose Dropiewski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Scintillation and optical properties of an integrated InAs/GaAs Quantum Dot (QD) Scintillation Detector were investigated to improve efficiency and reduce the decay time of luminescence. The photoluminescent properties of InAs QDs embedded in a GaAs matrix were studied as-grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on GaAs substrates, and on foreign substrates fabricated as thick (10-25 μm) waveguides. The luminescent efficiency of QDs as-grown on GaAs substrates were examined using photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature and the thermal quenching of PL was analyzed by comparing the integrated PL intensities at 77K-400K. PL measurements were used to optimize QD AlAs capping, …

Near-Field And Far-Field Microscopic And Spectroscopic Characterizations Of Coupled Plasmonic, Excitonic And Polymeric Materials, Chih-Feng Wang

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

The properties of localized surface plasmons (LSP) have been broadly utilized for chemical sensing, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, biomedical imaging and photothermal treatments. By exploiting well-established plasmonic effects, the spectroscopic investigation of intriguing quantum phenomena, such as excitonic interband and intersubband (ISB) transitions in semiconductor heterostructures, was examined and extended in both far- and near-field optical measurements. For far-field characterization, we used colloidal plasmonic Au nanorods (AuNRs) to increase the quantum efficiency of InGaAs/GaAs single quantum well. By analyzing the temperature-dependent photoluminescence enhancement as a function of GaAs capping layer thickness, we attributed the mechanism of the LSP enhancement to …

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger May 2017

Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger

Dissertations and Theses

While silicon has long been utilized for its electronic properties, its use as an optical material has largely been limited due to the poor efficiency of interband transitions. However, discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline silicon in 1990 triggered many ensuing research efforts to optimize PL from nanocrystalline silicon for optical applications. Currently, use of photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) is commercially limited by: 1) the instability of the energy and intensity of the PL, and 2) the low quantum yield of interband PL from Si NPs.

Herein, red-emitting, hydrogen-passivated silicon nanoparticles (H-Si NPs) were synthesized by thermally-induced disproportionation …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Recently, organic inorganic mixed halide perovskite (MAPbX3; MA = CH3NH3+, X = Cl-, Br-, or I-) single crystals with low defect densities have been highlighted as candidate materials for high-efficiency photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Here we report the optical and structural investigations of mixed halide perovskite (MAPbBr3-xIx) single crystals. Mixed halide perovskite single crystals showed strong light soaking phenomena with light illumination conditions that were correlated to the trapping and detrapping events from defect sites. By systematic investigation with optical analysis, we found that the …

Energy Transfer In Cdse Nanoplatelet Superlattices, Kelly Wang, Jordan Snaider, Libai Huang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Two-dimension CdSe semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit unique, highly desirable optical and electronic properties, such as large absorption crossection and bright emission. Fӧrster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NPLs is responsible for the utility of these NPLs in fields such as lasing, lighting, solar energy, and sensing. Here we study energy transfer processes in NPL superlattices using photoluminescence (PL) and time resolved PL (TRPL) spectroscopic methods. Information on the effect of thickness of NPL is obtained through correlating PL and TRPL spectra of CdSe superlattices with AFM measurements. PL spectrum showed narrow fluorescence and absorption peaks at room temperature corresponding to …

Performance Of Tf-Vls Grown Inp Photovoltaic Cells, Junyan Shi, Yubo Sun, Peter Bermel Aug 2016

Performance Of Tf-Vls Grown Inp Photovoltaic Cells, Junyan Shi, Yubo Sun, Peter Bermel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

A grand challenge of photovoltaics (PV) is to find materials offering a promising combination of low costs and high efficiencies. While III-V material-based PV cells have set many world records, often their cost is much greater than other commercial cells. To help address this gap, thin-film vapor-liquid-solid (TF-VLS) grown Indium Phosphide (InP) PV cells have recently been developed, which both eliminate a key source of high costs and offer a direct bandgap of 1.34eV with potential to approach maximum theoretical efficiencies. However, the unanticipated phenomenon of open circuit voltage (Voc) degradation has prevented TF-VLS grown InP PV cells …

One-Dimensional Nanostructure And Sensing Applications: Tin Dioxide Nanowires And Carbon Nanotubes, Hoang Anh Tran

Dissertations and Theses

The key challenge for a nanomaterial based sensor is how to synthesize in bulk quantity and fabricate an actual device with insightful understanding of operational mechanisms during performance. I report here effective, controllable methods that exploit the concepts of the "green approach" to synthesize two different one-dimensional nanostructures, including tin oxide nanowires and carbon nanotubes. The syntheses are followed by product characterization and sensing device fabrications as well as sensor performance understanding at the molecular level. Sensor-analyte response and recovery kinetics are also presented.

The first part of the thesis describes bulk-scale synthesis and characterization of tin oxide nanowires by …

Photoluminescent Silicon Nanoparticles: Fluorescent Cellular Imaging Applications And Photoluminescence (Pl) Behavior Study, Sheng-Kuei Chiu Aug 2015

Photoluminescent Silicon Nanoparticles: Fluorescent Cellular Imaging Applications And Photoluminescence (Pl) Behavior Study, Sheng-Kuei Chiu

Dissertations and Theses

Molecular fluorophores and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been used as cellular imaging agents for biomedical research, but each class has challenges associated with their use, including poor photostability or toxicity. Silicon is a semiconductor material that is inexpensive and relatively environmental benign in comparison to heavy metal-containing quantum dots. Thus, red-emitting silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) are desirable to prepare for cellular imaging application to be used in place of more toxic QDs. However, Si NPs currently suffer poorly understood photoinstability, and furthermore, the origin of the PL remains under debate.

This dissertation first describes the use of diatomaceous earth …

Control Of Light-Matter Interaction Via Dispersion Engineering, Harish Natarajan Swaha Krishnamoorthy Oct 2014

Control Of Light-Matter Interaction Via Dispersion Engineering, Harish Natarajan Swaha Krishnamoorthy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis describes the design, fabrication and characterization of certain nanostructures to engineer light-matter interaction. These materials have peculiar dispersion properties owing to their structural design, which is exploited to control spontaneous emission properties of emitters such as quantum dots and dye molecules. We will discuss two classes of materials based on the size of their unit cell compared to the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation they interact with. The first class are hyperbolic metamaterials (HMM) composed of alternate layers of a metal and a dielectric of thicknesses much smaller than the wave- length. Using a HMM composed of silver …

Ion Beam Nano-Engineering Of Erbium Doped Silicon For Enhanced Light Emission At 1.54 Microns, Sebastian Naczas

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Erbium doped silicon is of great interest as a potential light source in Silicon Photonics research due to its light emission at 1.54 μm, which corresponds to the minimal loss of optical transmission in silica fibers for telecommunications. In this thesis a basic mechanism for excitation and de-excitation of Er in Si is reviewed. Based on such fundamental understanding, an innovative approach is proposed and implemented to improve Er luminescence properties through the formation of metal nanoparticles via impurity gettering in Si nanocavities.

Materials Engineering For Near-Infrared Light Emission From Silicon Compatible Mos Structures, Himani Suhag Kamineni Jan 2012

Materials Engineering For Near-Infrared Light Emission From Silicon Compatible Mos Structures, Himani Suhag Kamineni

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Silicon-based photonics requires several components, such as a light source, an amplifier/waveguide to transfer the signal, and a photodetector to detect the signal. The motivation for using these silicon-based technologies in photonics applications is two-fold: economic advantages offered by the compatibility with mature silicon IC manufacturing and its excellent material properties for photonic devices (high thermal conductivity, high optical damage threshold, etc.). One of the major challenges in the realization of this technology is the Si-based light source. Because of its indirect bandgap, silicon has very inefficient band-to-band radiative electron-hole recombination. To overcome this obstacle, tremendous research efforts have been …

Synthesis Of Ald Zinc Oxide And Thin Film Materials Optimization For Uv Photodetector Applications, Kandabara Nouhoum Tapily Apr 2011

Synthesis Of Ald Zinc Oxide And Thin Film Materials Optimization For Uv Photodetector Applications, Kandabara Nouhoum Tapily

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a direct, wide bandgap semiconductor material. It is thermodynamically stable in the wurtzite structure at ambient temperature conditions. ZnO has very interesting optical and electrical properties and is a suitable candidate for numerous optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, LEDs and UV-photodetectors. ZnO is a naturally n-type semiconductor. Due to the lack of reproducible p-type ZnO, achieving good homojunction ZnO-based photodiodes such as UV-photodetectors remains a challenge. Meanwhile, heterojunction structures of ZnO with p-type substrates such as SiC, GaN, NiO, AlGaN, Si etc. are used; however, those heterojunction diodes suffer from low efficiencies. ZnO is an …

Electron-Phonon Interactions And Quantum Confinement Effects On Optical Transitions In Nanoscale Silicon Films, Vimal Kumar Kamineni

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Theoretical studies have attributed the temperature dependence of the linear optical response (dielectric function) of bulk semiconductors to electron-phonon interactions and thermal expansion of the lattice. However, the role of phonons in the optical properties of nanoscale structures is often overlooked. This thesis systematically investigates the impact of both carrier confinement and electron-phonon interactions using nanoscale films of silicon in crystalline silicon quantum wells (c-Si QW). Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) is a linear optical technique used to of extract the dielectric function and thickness of very thin films. X-ray reflectivity (XRR) was used as the complementary thickness metrology method. The dielectric …
