Development Of Nial-Based Intermetallic Alloys: Effect Of Chromium Addition, R. Tiwari, Surendra N. Tewari, R. Asthana, A. Garg

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The mechanical behavior of dual-phase NiAl(Cr) microstructures, consisting of elongated primary NiAl grains aligned with an intergranular NiAl-Cr eutectic phase, produced by extrusion of a cast NiAl(Cr) alloy, has been examined. Chromium addition to create a dual phase NiAl-based aligned microstructure leads to large increases in the yield strength but no significant toughness improvement. This is achieved primarily by solid solution hardening and precipitation hardening. The constitutional hardening rate resulting from deviations from stoichiometry in the nickel-rich NiAl was estimated to be about 66 MPa per atomic per cent of nickel.

Nonlinear Finite Element Micromechanic Analysis Of Thermoplastic Composite Of Recycled High Density Polyethylene Reinforced With Short Glass Fibers, Qiming Lou

Masters Theses

This thesis studied the nonlinear micromechanic behavior of thermoplastic composite of recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with short glass fibers using finite element method. The composite material was modeled using a micromechanic unit cell to simulate the stress distribution between the plastic matrix and the fiber in the composite. Nonlinear behavior of recycled HDPE and imperfect bonding between the fiber and matrix were investigated. Load-bearing capability of the fiber was evaluated using stress partition ratio (SPR) in the composite models. The effect of fiber aspect ratio on the stress distribution of the composite was studied to optimize the material …

Investigation Into The Behavior Of Geometrically Nonlinear Composite Arches, John C. Bailey Dec 1994

Investigation Into The Behavior Of Geometrically Nonlinear Composite Arches, John C. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

This research modifies the existing finite element formulation of a potential energy based large deformation and moderate rotation theory. Hermitian shape functions replace the existing linear bending angle interpolations. Negligible differences between the two formulations indicate the underlying kinematics limit the accuracy, not the finite element interpolations. Using the new program, numerous nonlinear arch geometries are modeled to investigate the effects of arc length and thickness variations. Local and global snapping phenomena are captured as well as through the thickness shear driven nonlinearities.

Viscoplastic Characterization And Fatigue Modeling Of Titanium Based Metal Matrix Composites, Mark A. Foringer Dec 1994

Viscoplastic Characterization And Fatigue Modeling Of Titanium Based Metal Matrix Composites, Mark A. Foringer

Theses and Dissertations

Viscoplastic characterization and fatigue modeling of titanium-based metal matrix composites was accomplished by combining a unified viscoplastic theory, a nonlinear micromechanics model, and a linear damage accumulation model. First. Ti 15-3 was characterized using the Bodner-Partom viscoplastic theory. A micromechanics model was then employed in a linear damage accumulation fatigue model to predict the fatigue behavior of titanium based composites. The viscoplastic behavior predictions of the micromechanics model were used to eliminate separately defined time dependent terms in the fatigue model. Also, a new linear damage accumulation model was developed from the fatigue behavior of the composite constituents. Finally, it …

Fatigue Behavior Of A Cross-Ply Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature Under Tension-Tension Loading, Craig D. Steiner

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the fatigue behavior and damage mechanisms of a [0-90]4s SiC-MAS ceramic matrix composite under tension-tension loading at two elevated temperatures and two frequencies. Stress and strain hystereses, maximum and minimum strain, and modulus of elasticity were evaluated to characterize the material behavior. Microscopy and fractography were used to evaluate damage progression and mechanisms. Fatigue life was independent of frequency at both temperatures.

Investigation Of Tension-Compression Fatigue Behavior Of A Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Darren L. Kraabel Dec 1994

Investigation Of Tension-Compression Fatigue Behavior Of A Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Darren L. Kraabel

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the fatigue behavior in a unidirectional metal matrix composite under tension-compression loading conditions. Stress-strain responses, modulus and strain trends were monitored to characterize damage. Fractography and microscopy were used to characterize failure modes. Fatigue life curves were plotted base on different parameters such as stress and strain. Tension-compression fatigue life was shorter than the obtained under tension-tension fatigue cycling. Creep, observed in tension-tension. fatigue cycling, and the effects of the compressive load on the plastic zone around the crack tip explain shorter life under tension-compression fatigue loading.

Characterization Of Fatigue Behavior Of 2-D Woven Fabric Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Daniel J. Groner

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the fatigue behavior and associated damage mechanisms in notched and unnotched enhanced Sic-SiC ceramic matrix composite specimens at 1100°C. Stiffness degradation, strain variation, and hysteresis were evaluated to characterize material behavior. Microscopic examination was performed to characterize damage mechanisms. During high cycle-low stress fatigue tests, far less fiber-matrix interface debond was evident than in low cycle-high stress fatigue tests. Notched specimens exhibited minimal stress concentration during monotonic tensile testing and minimal notch sensitivity during fatigue testing. Damage mechanisms were also similar to unnotched.

Design And Analysis Of Constrained Layer Damping Treatments For Bending And Torsion, Kimberly J. Balkema Sep 1994

Design And Analysis Of Constrained Layer Damping Treatments For Bending And Torsion, Kimberly J. Balkema

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, different aspects of constrained layer damping treatments on beams of various geometries are studied. First, the optimal length of a constrained layer damping treatment mounted on a surface in linear strain is identified as a function of the relative stiffnesses of the damping layers and the non-uniformity of the surface stain. The analysis extends previous work that considered the case of uniform surface strain. Sixth order sandwich beam theory is then modified for use with a rectangular beam covered with a segmented constrained layer damping treatment. Non-dimensional variables are used to simplify the form of the problem. …

Transverse Stress Effects For Laminated Composite Beams In Bending, Christine Chatterton Schleicher Apr 1994

Transverse Stress Effects For Laminated Composite Beams In Bending, Christine Chatterton Schleicher

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A higher-order theory and an associated finite element formulation are developed for analysis of laminated planar beams in bending. The higher-order theory incorporates both transverse normal stress and transverse shear stress, and is developed using two approaches. The first approach is based on assuming the transverse normal strain distribution to be a cubic function through the beam thickness, while the second approach is based on assuming the transverse normal stress distribution to be a cubic function through the beam thickness. In both approaches, the transverse shear strain distribution is assumed to be a quadratic function through the beam thickness. Theoretical …

Simultaneous Design Of Active Vibration Control And Passive Damping, Michele Lynn Devereaux Gaudreault Dec 1993

Simultaneous Design Of Active Vibration Control And Passive Damping, Michele Lynn Devereaux Gaudreault

Theses and Dissertations

A modified form of the standard linear quadratic regulator LQR cost functional is used to optimally blend active vibration control and passive structural damping, whether viscous or viscoelastic. Viscoelastic damping is first modelled by a standard linear model, and then by a fractional derivative model. For the viscous damping case and the classically modelled viscoelastic damping case, a sub-optimal closed form solution is derived that is independent of the initial conditions. An iterative technique that minimizes the average value of the cost functional and one that minimizes the maximum value are developed. Both techniques are applicable to viscous and viscoelastic …

Influence Of Embedded Optical Fibers On Compressive Strength Of Advanced Composites, Stefan B. Dosedel

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of embedding optical fibers into advanced composite materials. This combination was meant to simulate 'smart structures' that have been shown to sense several different variables in the composite including strain, temperature, and damage. A laminate orientation taken from an existing aircraft structure was used to fabricate sixteen groups of specimens which were subjected to compression testing in an IITRI fixture to determine the ultimate compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. Ten of these groups were fabricated with optical fibers while the other six were control groups and contained no optical fibers. This study showed that …

Characterization Of Fatigue Damage In A Metal Matrix Composite (Scs-6/ Ti-15-3) At Elevated Temperature, Brian P. Sanders Nov 1993

Characterization Of Fatigue Damage In A Metal Matrix Composite (Scs-6/ Ti-15-3) At Elevated Temperature, Brian P. Sanders

Theses and Dissertations

The fatigue characteristics of a unidirectional titanium based metal matrix composite (MMC) were investigated at elevated temperature (427°C). A hybrid strain controlled loading mode was used to subject the 0° and 90° laminas to fatigue. Along with the fatigue tests, microscopy and analytical modeling ware also conducted. This combination of activities led to defining the initiation and progression of damage and deformation in the MMC. Hen loading was parallel to the fiber on, the fatigue behavior was initially dominated by creep deformation of the matrix. Then, depending on the maximum strain, specimen failure was the result either fiber fractures or …

Computational And Experimental Investigation Into Fracture Of Brittle Fiber - Brittle Matrix Composite Systems, James P. Solti Dec 1992

Computational And Experimental Investigation Into Fracture Of Brittle Fiber - Brittle Matrix Composite Systems, James P. Solti

Theses and Dissertations

Experimental and computational analyses provided an improved understanding of quasi-static fracture in model composite systems. Constant displacement compression tests using borosilicate glass double cleavage drilled compression test templates provided qualitative assessments of localized toughening for crack growth near cylindrical inclusions. Large crack-tip stress fields induced interfacial slip and separation prior to arrival of the main crack. Debonding and the proliferation of secondary matrix cracks characterized the role of bridging fibers along weak interfaces. Strong residual normal compressive interfacial stresses diminished the influence of crack-tip stresses; however, slip was still observed. VHS tape and computer enhanced photos record a history of …

Behavior Of A Titanium Matrix Composite Under Quasi-Static Tensile And Compressive Loading, Keith L. Bearden

Theses and Dissertations

Quasi-Static tensile and compressive testing was performed on a unidirectional titanium matrix composite. The specific material was SCS-9/β 21S. The initial tensile and compressive modulus for both laminates was the same. The ninety degree laminate had a tensile and compressive modulus of 115.89 GPa. The zero degree laminate had a tensile and compressive modulus of 197.51 GPa. The ninety degree laminate exhibited a three stage stress/strain response in tension. The first stage is completely linearly elastic, however, partial debonding of the fiber from the matrix was observed. This partial debased did not effect the stress/strain response. The second stage is …

Behavior Of A Centrally Notched Cross-Ply And Unidirectional Ceramic Matrix Composite In Tension-Compression Fatigue, William A. Weidenaar Dec 1992

Behavior Of A Centrally Notched Cross-Ply And Unidirectional Ceramic Matrix Composite In Tension-Compression Fatigue, William A. Weidenaar

Theses and Dissertations

Centrally notched (hole), cross-ply, ((0/90)2)s, and unidirectional, (0)8 laminates of Silicon Carbide fiber-reinforced Aluminosilicate glass, SiC/1723, were fatigue tested under tension-compression loading with a load ratio of -1. Damage accumulated continuously for both lay- ups, leading to eventual failure and a reduced fatigue life. Critical damage in the cross-ply consisted of longitudinal cracks in the 90° plies growing and combining with transverse cracks to effectively eliminate the 90° plies' load carrying capability and allowing the specimen to buckle. Critical damage in the unidirectional lay-up consisted of longitudinal cracks which initiated at the shear stress concentration …

Fatigue Behavior Of A Cross-Ply Ceramic Matrix Composite Under Tension-Tension And Tension-Compression Loading, Frank A. Opalski Dec 1992

Fatigue Behavior Of A Cross-Ply Ceramic Matrix Composite Under Tension-Tension And Tension-Compression Loading, Frank A. Opalski

Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted which investigated the behavior of a cross-ply [0/90]2S Nicalon/Calcium-Aluminosilicate (Nicalon/CAS) ceramic matrix composite at room temperature under tension-compression fatigue loading. Material behavior and damage was recorded by stress-strain curves, elastic modulus, hysteretic energy density, and acetate replication techniques. Tension-tension fatigue tests at a load ratio R of 0.1 (R = σmin/σmax) were completed which determined that 140 MPa was the maximum stress allowable in which cycle runout (1,000,000 cycles) would occur. Above this value, transverse crack density increased with respect to cycles and failure ultimately occurred. Tension-compression tests were then performed …

Theses and Dissertations

SCS-9/β21s has a reduced gauge thickness, in comparison with other metal matrix composites, due to a smaller diameter fiber. This reduced gauge thickness makes it an attractive candidate for the skin of hypersonic vehicles. Tensile testing of (0/90)2s and (O/±45/90)s laminates was performed at room temperature, 482°C, and 650°C. Both notched and unnotched specimens were tested. Notched specimens, open and filled hole, had a width-to-diameter ratio of six. Materials 7075-T6 and Mar-m-246 were used as pins in the filled hole tensile testing. Analytical work was completed to predict material properties, elastic and plastic stress concentration factors, residual stresses, …

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky Oct 1992

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Continuous filament grid-stiffened structure is a stiffening concept that combines structural efficiency and damage tolerance. However, buckle resistant design of such structures using finite elements methods is expensive and time consuming. An analytical model of a general grid stiffened structure is developed using a smeared theory with a first order shear deformation theory to account for transverse shear flexibilities. The solution for buckling of a simply supported panel subjected to combined loading is developed using energy method and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The smeared theory results are compared with finite element results. The results smeared theory compare well with the finite …

Analysis Of Impact Damage Of Composite Laminates Using Five-Point Bending, Mark Edward Robeson Jul 1992

Analysis Of Impact Damage Of Composite Laminates Using Five-Point Bending, Mark Edward Robeson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The low-velocity impact of composite laminates can induce high transverse shear strains, resulting in severe damage within the laminate. This type of damage may be studied in a quasi-static manner by use of a multi-span beam shear test in five-point bending configuration. A five-point bending arrangement induces high transverse shear strains in sections of the laminate, causing failures, such as intraply cracks and delaminations, that are similar to those caused by low-velocity impact. Stress distributions in the laminate can be calculated using a potential energy approach, and these stress distributions can be correlated with failure locations in the five-point bending …

Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot Dec 1991

Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a model is developed to predict crack growth rates in a titanium-aluminide alloy under thermal-mechanical fatigue (TMF). This TMF crack growth rate prediction model, which requires only isothermal data to define its parameters, is distinguished from earlier models in two ways. First, it accounts for mechanical-fatigue and environmental crack growth rate contributions while it also considers a retardation mechanism thought to be caused by creep blunting of the crack tip. This is the first study to account for such a retardation mechanism during TMF. The second uniqueness of the model is that its general form can account …
