Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot Dec 1991

Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a model is developed to predict crack growth rates in a titanium-aluminide alloy under thermal-mechanical fatigue (TMF). This TMF crack growth rate prediction model, which requires only isothermal data to define its parameters, is distinguished from earlier models in two ways. First, it accounts for mechanical-fatigue and environmental crack growth rate contributions while it also considers a retardation mechanism thought to be caused by creep blunting of the crack tip. This is the first study to account for such a retardation mechanism during TMF. The second uniqueness of the model is that its general form can account …

Failure Characteristics Of Scs-6/Ti-24al-11nb Composite With A Circular Hole At Room And Elevated Temperatures, Joseph E. Overbeck Dec 1991

Failure Characteristics Of Scs-6/Ti-24al-11nb Composite With A Circular Hole At Room And Elevated Temperatures, Joseph E. Overbeck

Theses and Dissertations

Off-axis loading of eight ply, unidirectional specimens with and without a circular hole determined the ultimate tensile strength of SCS-6/Ti- 24A1-11Nb composite at temperatures of 25°C and 650°C and fiber orientations of 0 degrees, 15 degrees, 45 degrees. Longitudinal moduli of the tested orientations compared closely to the rule of mixtures calculated values, and strengths compared closely to those predicted by the Tsai-Wu failure theory. The small diameter hole does not act as a stress concentrator, but merely reduces the material's strength in proportion to area loss. This result differs from those predicted by linear finite element analysis and orthotropic …

Failure Characterization Of A Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite With Circular Holes, Daniel E. Bullock Dec 1991

Failure Characterization Of A Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite With Circular Holes, Daniel E. Bullock

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite with circular holes. The specific objectives were to (1) determine the relationship between tensile failure stress and the ratio of hole diameter to specimen width, and (2) to examine the initiation and progression of damage. The ceramic matrix composite used was SiC/ 1723, composed of continuous silicon titanium carbide fibers in an aluminosilicate glass ceramic matrix. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed at room temperature on two different layups; unidirectional [0]8, and [0/90]2s symmetric. Each layup was tested at three diameter-to-width …

Room Temperature Wear Characteristics Of Al2O3-Particle-Reinforced Aluminum Alloy Composite, A. R. Nesarikar, Surendra N. Tewari, E. E. Graham Nov 1991

Room Temperature Wear Characteristics Of Al2O3-Particle-Reinforced Aluminum Alloy Composite, A. R. Nesarikar, Surendra N. Tewari, E. E. Graham

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Room temperature dry wear and friction properties of a metal matrix composite sliding against cast iron have been studied in a pin-on-plate reciprocating wear tester. The composite consists of Al2O3 particles in an aluminum alloy matrix. Wear is caused by abrasion, interfacial adhesion and ploughing of the softer surface with the asperities of the harder surface and the debris. With increasing load the friction coefficient and wear initially increase and then ecrease. The decreases in wear and friction are caused by increased hardness resulting from re-embedding of the fractured Al2O3 particles near the surface …

An Experimental Investigation Of Composite Sensors For Crack Length Measurement, Manickam Ramasamy Oct 1991

An Experimental Investigation Of Composite Sensors For Crack Length Measurement, Manickam Ramasamy

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Structural defects such as cracks can cause catastrophic failure in engineering components or structures. There are many techniques to measure the crack growth in materials and are commercially available. In this thesis, bondable crack length measurement gages have been investigated and these gages give electrical signal as the output and measure the crack length continuously. Silver paint, nickel powder impregnated epoxy and carbon powder impregnated polymer composite gages are investigated and tests are conducted by resistance measurement method with simple instrumentation and by potential drop method with a constant current output source. Rectangular shape gages have been investigated and as …

An Experimental Study On Anisotropic Behavior Of Granular Materials, Jong Woon Choi Jul 1991

An Experimental Study On Anisotropic Behavior Of Granular Materials, Jong Woon Choi

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Two types of mixtures of glass bead assemblies (large beads and small beads) were used to investigate the source of the anisotropy of granular materials in volume change behaviors during shearing process. Most tests (7 series) were conducted in the conventional triaxial device while a series of the experiments were in the hollow cylinder test device. All the specimens were first isotropically consolidated up to 137.9 kPa and were subjected to shearing in triaxial compression and triaxial extension modes with a constant effective mean normal stress (137.9 kPa). The test results indicated that all the specimens had a strong but …

Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework And Tools, Stephen C.-Y. Lu, Robert G. Wilhelm Jan 1991

Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework And Tools, Stephen C.-Y. Lu, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper describes CASCADE-T—a new approach to tolerance synthesis that uses a complete representation of the conditional tolerance relations that exist between features of a part under design. Conditional tolerances are automatically determined from functional requirements and shape information. Tolerance primitives based on the virtual boundary requirements approach to tolerance representation are composed to form more complex tolerance relationships. Artificial intelligence techniques, including a constraint network, frame-based system, and dependency tracking are used to support flexible and detailed computation for tolerance analysis and synthesis.
