Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Despite the abundant amount of studies about bachelor’s degree completion in higher education, little research paid attention to the characteristics of students attending non-residential institutions, given that this type of college accounts for approximately half of all the higher education institutions in the United States. Using student records and survey data, this study compares the student characteristics between residential and non-residential colleges at the institutional level. In addition, using a primarily non-residential college’s survey and student record data, this research explores diverse factors that affect students’ academic and social integration and their graduation at the individual level. Findings include that …

Enhancing Project Based Learning With Unsupervised Learning Of Project Reflections, Hua Leong Fwa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is an area of research and application that uses computers to analyze human text. It has seen wide adoption within several industries but few studies have investigated it for use in evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions and pedagogies. Pedagogies such as Project based learning (PBL) centers on learners solving an authentic problem or challenge which leads to knowledge creation and higher engagement. PBL also lends itself well in plugging the gap between what is taught in classrooms and applying the knowledge gained to the real working environment. In this study, we seek to investigate how …

Lived Leadership Experiences Of Nursing Clinical Instructors In A Prelicensure Nursing Program: A Phenomenological Study, Catherine Marin Sep 2021

Lived Leadership Experiences Of Nursing Clinical Instructors In A Prelicensure Nursing Program: A Phenomenological Study, Catherine Marin

All Theses And Dissertations

The role of the nursing clinical instructor has evolved alongside the nursing profession. Nursing clinical instructors are expected to teach, coach, empower, and lead future registered nurses throughout their academic prelicensure journey. Although nursing clinical instructors possess at least the minimum required educational and clinical experience for their role as instructors, it is unclear how they obtain their leadership skills. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand how nursing clinical instructors attain self-empowerment and develop leadership skills. The theoretical framework was the integrated model of leader traits, behaviors, and effectiveness (IMoLB) developed by Derue et al. (2011). …

Student Perceptions Of Authoring A Publication Stemming From A Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (Cure), Ashley N. Turner, Anil K. Challa, Katelyn M. Cooper

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) engage students in authentic research experiences in a course format and can sometimes result in the publication of that research. However, little is known about student-author perceptions of CURE publications. In this study, we examined how students perceive they benefit from authoring a CURE publication and what they believe is required for authorship of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal. All 16 students who were enrolled in a molecular genetics CURE during their first year of college participated in semistructured interviews during their fourth year. At the time of the interviews, students had been authors …
