First-Year Engineering Students’ Motivation To Participate In Virtual International Collaborative Experiential Program (Vicep): An Expectancy-Value-Cost Approach, Cedrick Kwuimy, So Yoon Yoon

Changes in course delivery mechanisms necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity to develop a Virtual International Collaborative Experiential Program (VICEP) as an alternative to traditional, travel-based study abroad programs. This paper presents the results of an investigation of engineering students’ motivation, perceived challenges, and preferred geographic areas for the VICEP. A sample of 116 first-year engineering students at the University of Cincinnati responded to survey items regarding their perceptions of motivation to participate in the VICEP, including in terms of expectancy, value, and cost, along with open-ended questions. Though the best time to get your flu shot is typically between September and October, the second-best time to get vaccinated is now, according to East Tennessee State University's Dr. Randy Wykoff, dean of the ETSU College of Public Health.

The EF-4 tornado that struck Mayfield, Kentucky on the evening of December 10, 2021 caused tremendous destruction to the entire community of Mayfield. Two education professors at a neighboring university sought to help students in the Mayfield Independent School District and were able to do so via funding from a KEEP mini-grant. 81 of their college students were trained in Response to Intervention (RtI) practices and provided individual and small group instruction to students in Mayfield for 2 hours a week for 17 weeks during the 2022-2023 school year. Massive Upper Gi Bleeding From Duodenal Invasion Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Successfully Treated With Embolization And Hemospray®, Patrick Twohig, Erin Walsh, Amy Calderon

Direct invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) into the duodenum is a unique and life-threatening complication of HCC that has been rarely reported. A 60-year-old male with known HCC and cirrhosis presented with melena. Computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 7cm hepatic mass abutting the duodenum. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy demonstrated a large, actively oozing mass in the duodenum treated with Hemospray® followed by transarterial embolization (TAE). Active upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal invasion of HCC can be successfully treated with Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat and TAE.

Recurrent Polymicrobial Bloodstream Infections As Harbingers Of A Duodenal-Inferior Vena Cava Fistula, Gregory E. Koval, Richard J. Hankins, Jasmine R. Marcelin

This is a case of an 82-year-old patient who presented with recurrent polymicrobial bloodstream infections and no obvious undrained source of infection. She had prior double barrel iliocaval stenting for post thrombotic syndrome. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and primary repair of a duodenal-caval fistula with a fascia lata patch and an omental pedicle flap. No further bloodstream infections were documented after the repair. This discussion highlights an uncommon complication of IVC stenting, its presentation as well as the operative approach used to repair the fistula.

Background: Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) failure and difficult intravenous access (DIVA) are pervasive issues causing patient suffering and increased costs. Despite their prevalence, there is a gap in internal medicine and pediatric resident training to manage these challenges effectively.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the value of ultrasound-guided-PIVC (USGPIVC) education for internal medicine and pediatric residents and the impact of a 1-hour multidisciplinary workshop on their knowledge and confidence.

After having first-year seminar students use Web 2.0 technology, specifically a website creation tool as part of an assignment, they participated in a survey to provide feedback over their engagement in creating a Google Sites® website. Academic expertise has traditionally served as the measure of faculty’s effectiveness in the classroom. Twenty-first century changes in the landscape of higher education have brought the need for sound pedagogy as a foundational tool in the college classroom. Faculty learning communities (FLCs) are an effective method to facilitate the development of pedagogy, which, in turn, has shown to have a direct effect on student success and graduation rates. This article examines the experiences of two faculty members at a Midwestern university who developed a 10-week inter-disciplinary FLC that was offered over 5 semesters, as well as participant feedback.

Research reveals that high stress levels in undergraduate students may negatively impact their emotional and physical well-being. Short-term approaches to introducing stress management on college campuses have been explored.
