Therapy Dog Utilization On A University Campus And The Effects On Stress, Anxiety, And University Connection, Mistie M. Bibbee
Therapy Dog Utilization On A University Campus And The Effects On Stress, Anxiety, And University Connection, Mistie M. Bibbee
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this non-experimental, descriptive study was to determine the effects that regular, brief visits with therapy dogs may have on the stress, anxiety, and university connection of college students who live in the residence halls via a qualitative research design involving the use of observations, questionnaires, and individual interviews. The study involved a sample (n = 6) of undergraduate students who engaged in observed visits with therapy dogs and their handlers over the course of three to four weeks. Students completed a pre-and-post Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire and a final interview. Based on the findings …

The Value Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Academic Freedom In The American Academy, Daniel J. Perrone
The Value Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Academic Freedom In The American Academy, Daniel J. Perrone
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation surveys several landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases of academic freedom in the 20th and 21st century to argue for the value of a tolerant and liberal interpretation of unrestricted academic freedom. Central to its argument is a defense of Oliver Wendell Holmes 1919 ruling in Abrams that society is best served where all expressions are tested in a “marketplace of ideas,” a term first used by John Stuart Mill in his 1859 essay, “On Liberty.” In an era of increasing casualization of academic labor (the adjunct labor force) and political paranoia about terror, I conclude that the continual …

Anxiety And Depression Among U.S. International Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ismatara Reena, Edward Hebert, Kumer Das, Shankari M. Dipti, Nirmal C. Gope, Raymond Doe
Kinesiology
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted college students worldwide. International students are a significant group of college students in the United States, making up approximately 5% of enrollment. While research has examined the mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on college students, its impact on international students in the U.S. has not been well-documented. This study examined anxiety and depression levels of 170 international students enrolled in three public U.S. universities. Data were collected using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) survey and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Over 60% of the sample reported anxiety and depressive symptoms, with 35.1% showing …
Placement Measures In Dual Credit: A Quantitative Study, Jessica I. Pickel
Placement Measures In Dual Credit: A Quantitative Study, Jessica I. Pickel
Dissertations of Practice
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the studied college broadened its eligibility criteria for dual credit to include an in-progress high school GPA. To determine whether the use of an-in progress GPA should be fully adopted as a placement measure, further study was needed. This quantitative study examined the relationship between the placement measures used before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and dual credit students’ access to and performance in the gateway ENGL 101 course taken at Prairieland Community College.
Data were collected from a small community college in the Midwestern region of the United States retrospectively over the academic …
"Leaving My Mark In White Spaces": A Critical Qualitative Case Study Exploring Black/African-American Undergraduate Women's Perceptions Of The Campus Environment's Influence On Persistence At A Hispanic-Serving Women's Institution, Keri Anne Alioto

"Leaving My Mark in White Spaces": A Critical Qualitative Case Study Exploring Black/African-American Undergraduate Women's Perceptions of the Campus Environment's Influence on Persistence at a Hispanic-Serving Women's Institution
One of the most overlooked populations in university environments and in research are students who identify as Black/African-American undergraduate women (B/AAUW). B/AAUW experience the intersectionality of both race and gender discrimination in higher education, often leaving these students silenced and marginalized while navigating their college experience. The purpose of this critical qualitative case study was to better understand how B/AAUW perceived the campus environment contributing to their sense of belonging and academic …
Where Do I Start? A Pathway For Personal Growth For Faculty Committed To Creating Inclusive Classrooms, Robbie Bishop-Monroe, Joanna Garcia
Where Do I Start? A Pathway For Personal Growth For Faculty Committed To Creating Inclusive Classrooms, Robbie Bishop-Monroe, Joanna Garcia
2023 Faculty Bibliography
This commentary offers insights into how accounting faculty can begin to create more inclusive, equitable experiences for students. Many faculty are well intentioned and desire to improve the student experience but may not know where to start. We introduce a pathway of reflection, education, and action that we believe can help faculty get started on this process. Reflection is the process of assessing one’s own identity, influences, biases, and personal experiences with diversity and privilege. Education involves seeking out information and experiences that can enhance cultural competence, particularly around gaps identified through reflection. Action refers to practical steps taken to …

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the education of students of all ages and challenged teachers and academic support services to make major adaptations to continue to support student learning while also limiting the spread of the virus. Our team received an NSF grant in the Fall of 2018 to broaden participation in engineering by recruiting and retaining students who have been historically marginalized in engineering. We focused our research on first-year students who participated in pathway programs which provided peer and formal mentoring, success coaching, shared classes, and social activities, that would provide a sense of community and shared engineering identity …

All Musselman Library Staff Works
At Bucknell University and Gettysburg College, an increasing focus on supporting creative undergraduate research as intensive, high-impact experiences has resulted in both institutions implementing library-led digital scholarship fellowships for their students. Gettysburg’s Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship began in 2016, and Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Summer Research Fellowship in 2017.1 While academic libraries have emerged as leaders on college campuses for digital humanities (DH) services, the programs at Gettysburg and Bucknell are distinctive in their structured curricula, a focus on independent student research, and the development of a local community of practice. Each program situates undergraduate research in the field of digital …
