"Risk And Refuge: The Role Of The Commonplace In Navigating Crisis" In Recollections From An Uncommon Time: 4c20 Documentarian Tales, Lynn Ishikawa

English Faculty publications

This collection of original essays was occasioned first by the 2020 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Annual Convention, and then, later, by the cancellation of it. As originally planned, Documentarians (attendees in a newly created role) would share their experiences of the CCCC Convention. After the meeting was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the collection became a means for the Documentarians to share a common experience in this uncommon time. As the volume editors write, "Expect to have some of the tales resonate with your experiences and others to depict a process of sensemaking that might not …

Tell Us What You Really Think: Implementing A Mixed-Methods Approach To Library User Assessment, Lidiya Grote, Emily Dill, Jennifer Hardin Jan 2023

Tell Us What You Really Think: Implementing A Mixed-Methods Approach To Library User Assessment, Lidiya Grote, Emily Dill, Jennifer Hardin

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This article presents an analysis of student feedback received via formal biennial survey and informal post-it notes assessment, and advocates for the use of informal assessment methods to supplement formal methodologies. A biennial satisfaction survey and an informal post-it notes assessment were employed to collect data from library users and yielded comprehensive, timely, and actionable feedback from the students, faculty, and staff. Feedback received from the two assessment methods allowed the University Library of Columbus (ULC) to gain a greater understanding of user needs and preferences which was used to improve library spaces, resources, and services to increase user satisfaction. …

Beyond The Binary: Gender Image And Experiences Of Marginalization On Campus, Kari J. Dockendorff, Claudia Geist Jan 2023

Beyond The Binary: Gender Image And Experiences Of Marginalization On Campus, Kari J. Dockendorff, Claudia Geist

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

This study explores levels of gender marginalization on college campuses in order to better understand who is at risk of being marginalized. In addition to conventional measures of sex, and gender, we explore scaled measures of how students see themselves, and how they think others see them, with respect to masculinity, femininity, and androgyny. In a survey distributed to undergraduate students, we explore experiences of gender microaggressions across the campus including experiences with pronouns, bathrooms, and interactions with staff and faculty. What we find is that marginalization based on gender is experienced by all students of all genders. Students who …

Envisioning The Future Of Queer Of Color Critique In Higher Education: Mobilizing The Framework In Research, Antonio Duran, Quortne R. Hutchings, Reginald A. Blockett, Romeo Jackson Jan 2023

Envisioning The Future Of Queer Of Color Critique In Higher Education: Mobilizing The Framework In Research, Antonio Duran, Quortne R. Hutchings, Reginald A. Blockett, Romeo Jackson

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

As queer and trans studies in higher education continues to embrace its interdisciplinary nature, scholars should further interrogate how they utilize critical and poststructural frameworks in designing their studies. This manuscript details the considerations that postsecondary education researchers should be mindful of as they seek to actualize the potential of queer of color critique (QOCC) in their studies. Specifically, the authors describe how individuals using QOCC should actualize the framework in the following four areas: considering the scope of the study, reflections on the researcher and participant relationship, engaging in responsive and transformative data collection, and centering equity and liberation …

Unsettling Colonial Structures In Education Through Community-Centered Praxis, Kimberley Greeson, Steven Sassaman, Katherine Williams, Abby Yost Jan 2023

Unsettling Colonial Structures In Education Through Community-Centered Praxis, Kimberley Greeson, Steven Sassaman, Katherine Williams, Abby Yost

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

In the context of settler colonialism in the US, mainstream education practices function as ongoing enactors of colonial processes. Decolonizing pedagogy seeks to challenge these dominant practices by centering place, Indigenous epistemologies, and rehumanizing values. In this paper, we discuss how faculty and students used community-based experiential learning projects (CBEL) to challenge these dominant and normative educational structures. By integrating an anti-racist and anti-colonial lens, CBEL projects themselves can work to dismantle power structures, build community, and promote experiential learning in a variety of educational spaces. The student projects presented here seek to unsettle colonial educational frameworks of white supremacy …

Artificial Intelligence, Basic Skills, And Quantitative Literacy, Gizem Karaali Jan 2023

Artificial Intelligence, Basic Skills, And Quantitative Literacy, Gizem Karaali

Numeracy

The introduction in November 2022 of ChatGPT, a freely available language-based artificial intelligence, has led to concerns among some educators about the feasibility and benefits of teaching basic writing and critical thinking skills to students in the context of easily accessed, AI-based cheating mechanisms. As of now, ChatGPT can write pretty convincing student-level prose, but it is still not very good at answering quantitatively rich questions. Therefore, for the time being, the preceding concerns may not be shared by a large portion of the numeracy education community. However, as Google and WolframAlpha are definitely capable of answering standard and some …

Focused On Pedagogy: Qr Grading Rubrics For Written Arguments, Ruby Daniels, Kathryn Appenzeller Knowles, Emily Naasz, Amanda Lindner

Numeracy

Institutional assessments of quantitative literacy/reasoning (QL/QR) have been extensively tested and reported in the literature. While appropriate for measuring student learning at the programmatic or institutional level, such instruments were not designed for classroom grading. After modifying a widely accepted institutional rubric designed to assess QR in written arguments, the current mixed method study tested the reliability of two QR analytic grading rubrics for written arguments and explored students’ reactions to the grading tools. Undergraduate students enrolled in a business course (N = 59) participated. A total of 415 QR artifacts from 40 students were assessed; an additional 19 …
