The COVID-19 pandemic forever changed the world. The virus’ rapid spread forced federal and local governments to enact quarantine mandates. On March 11, 2020, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2022) announced COVID-19 as a pandemic. Two days later the United States declared an official nationwide emergency. Institutions were required to shut down and persons deemed non-essential participated in quarantine. Remote working became the standard, thus affecting all aspects of individual lives and institutions, especially education. Primarily in-person universities and colleges across the world scrambled to address the COVID-19 health concerns, comply with local shutdown rules, and attempt …

Mental Health And Coping Habits Of Young Black Men In Stem At An Hbcu, Chamberlain Newman
XULAneXUS
This study examines the mental health and coping habits of young Black men pursuing STEM degrees at a historically Black college and university (HBCU) in New Orleans. Drawing on survey data from 43 Black male STEM students ages 18 to 22, the study addresses four research questions concerning factors affecting mental well-being, the role of the HBCU environment, stress coping strategies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings indicate that peer camaraderie, faculty engagement, and access to supportive social networks are central to students' mental wellness and academic persistence. Positive coping mechanisms identified by participants included listening to music, …

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
“Mr. President, we are not employees of the university. We are the university.” Some of you are no doubt familiar with this quote. It was the response Isidore Rabi, a distinguished member of the faculty at Columbia University, had for President Dwight Eisenhower, who referred to the faculty as “employees of the university” in 1950.

An Autoethnographic Reflection From Two Black Women Ph.D.’S And Their White Woman Advisor On The Use And Impact Of Sista Circle Methodology In The Dissertation Process, B. Nathan, Rashida Love, Laurie A. Carlson
The Qualitative Report
Black Women doctoral students experience the journey as “outsiders within” (Collins, 1986), navigating how to excel and thrive while being on the margins (hooks, 1991). The authors of this manuscript reflect upon the impact of adopting a culturally relevant methodology and method, integrating various forms of Black Women’s art, and challenging tenets of traditional western research. An auto-ethnographic exercise illuminated the critical need for Nathan and Love to insert their Black Womanhood into their dissertation research process using Sista Circle Methodology, an active decision to decolonize research. Carlson provided a critical link to ensuring Nathan and Love graduated and provides …

I would have told you that this is a science-fiction story but it actually happened to me while I was in high school. My experience in high school was just like everyone else’s that I knew. There were good days and bad days. It was a lot like my older sister’s experience in high school until it wasn't due to COVID-19.

Session 4 - Ethnic Studies In The Library: Supporting New Curriculum, Nicole Hunter
High School Libraries Workshop
Starting in 2025, California public high schools will be required to offer Ethnic Studies courses. While this mandate may not affect your school, the waves of this movement are likely to impact course content at all grade levels and in all schools in coming years. How can we as library workers support the needs that will come with these exciting changes? In this session, I will talk about my role in piloting an Ethnic Studies course at San Francisco University High School, walk you through a short lesson, and then we will have time to talk about ways that libraries …
