Quicksand Craft Center: Documentation & Analysis Of A Handweaving Program In Vest, Kentucky, Deborah Champion

Data on the handweaving program at the Quicksand Craft Center in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky were compiled and analyzed. Four areas--history of the craft program, business organization and financial structure, weave patterns of goods woven and sold by the craft center, and weavers employed in the program --were examined to assess the success of the program in the local community. Factors in the four areas examined contributed to the success of the program. The benevolence, perseverance, and co-operation of the founders, directors and community members involved with the craft center have been largely responsible for the continued success …

The junior high school was created in the early 1900's from the eight year elementary or grammar school and a four year high school. At that time administrators and teachers believed that the needs of the middle year students were being overlooked (Jackson, 1986). The current concept of middle schools began developing in the late 1950's and was being implemented in 1963 (Kindred, Wolotkiewicz, Mickelson, & Coplein, 1981). This reorganization of the middle/junior high school started in West Virginia in the late 1970's. To explore the characteristics of home or hand machine knitting in this country , two survey s were conducted. The first examined home or hand machine knitters' instructional needs, yarn and machine brand preferences, and employment characteristics; the second explored availability of machine knitting instruction at educational institutions. The first survey was included in two machine knitting magazines and distributed by a mail order retailer; 579 knitters from 47 states and the District of Columbia responded. The second survey was sent to 341 post-secondary schools offering degrees related to clothing a nd textiles; 146 schools (42.8%) responded. The survey of …

The known population of earth sheltered houses in Warren County, Kentucky were studied (a) to document building materials and techniques utilized, (b) to describe the residents demographically and document their attitudes regarding satisfaction with earth sheltered housing, and (c) to determine reasons for building and resources utilized in financing and planning, as well as problems encountered in regard to the earth sheltered house.

Data on 21 housing units were collected through personal interviews. Data analysis was accomplished using contingency tables, chi-squares, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression.

A major goal in nutrition education is to promote adequate nourishment throughout the entire populace. Frequently, teenagers are identified as a population subgroup with poor dietary habits. Adolescents tend to skip meals, snack excessively, adopt poor dietary patterns, and, in general, have chosen rather carefree attitudes toward nutrition. Medical science asserts that the benefits of proper eating habits, established early in life, have influenced the ability to: concentrate, think on a higher plane, enjoy physical well being, and maintain good health. The purpose of this study was to determine what home economics teachers perceive they are teaching and compare their perceptions with what parents and social service agency representatives in economically depressed counties perceived students should be taught. In 1986, Johnson determined parents' and social service agency representatives' perceptions of the importance of home economics concepts for high school students. In March 1987, a questionnaire, adapted from Johnson's Nebraska Home Economics Needs Assessment questionnaire, was mailed to 50 high school home economics teachers from 41 economically depressed counties throughout Nebraska.
