JOHNSON CITY – Picture a groundhog-sized animal with horns on its nose like a rhinoceros, and you have a pretty good idea of the new species of extinct rodent described in a recent paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. It is only the sixth species of “horned gopher” ever discovered, and it has allowed researchers to tackle some questions about why and how these little critters evolved horns.

This year marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, an annual holiday observing the demise of slavery and marks the day June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached citizens in most remote parts of the former confederacy in Galveston, Texas. While President Abraham Lincoln liberated all Black Americans who resided in territory captured from the confederate army when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law on January 1, 1863, many Black (and some white citizens) in more rural and remote areas …

Dr. Brenda Louw, Chair of the Department Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at East Tennessee State University, is stepping down as chair after 11 years in that position on July 31, 2020 to focus on her research and enjoy her teaching in the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program and in various personnel preparation grants.

Louw joined ETSU from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she was the Chair of the Department of Communication Pathology. She and her husband Jack, moved to Johnson City in 2009. They became U.S. citizens in 2016. 

Under Louw’s leadership, the department has grown on multiple levels. …

ETSU Health Internal Medicine held its 2020 graduation at the Veterans Administration campus Gazebo on Saturday, May 30.  Due to the current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the event was recorded for friends and family to view. 

Twenty-one residents completed their three-year program as required by the ACGME, which will allow these individuals to become Board Certified in Internal Medicine as a field of practice.  They may also continue their education through additional training fellowships within the areas of: cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, oncology, infectious diseases and pulmonology.

Sales managers often take on the dual responsibilities of managing a sales team and selling to customers. This practice raises questions about how sales managers' time allocation to managing and selling activities affects sales team performance. Building on qualitative findings, this research first highlights and categorizes activities that are regularly competing for the limited time resources of today's sales managers. Our qualitative results reveal a prevalence of sales managers taking a "hybrid" approach to managing their sales teams by regularly allocating time toward both managing and selling activities. Araminta Ray’s path to East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine took a 2,190.9-mile detour that required some of the same tools she has used as a medical student – resilience, perspective, and community.

Ray was accepted to Quillen in 2018.

“I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to become a doctor,” Ray said. “But I’ve also known I was going to hike the Appalachian Trail about as long as I’ve known I was going to be a doctor. It’s been a part of me and one of my lifelong goals for years.”

JOHNSON CITY – Alumni of East Tennessee State University, current students curious about what the university was like in yesteryear, and other interested folks can now access several years’ worth of yearbooks thanks to the Archives of Appalachia in ETSU’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.

The Archives is in the ongoing process of digitizing all of the university’s yearbooks and making them available online.

ETSU’s yearbook was called “Old Hickory” during its first 10 years of publication, which began in 1919 after the university’s founding in 1911 as East Tennessee State Normal School. The name changed to “The Chalkline” …

This paper presents a conceptual model for SME ICT marketing impact. The conceptualization integrates approaches from technology-in-practice scholarship, which argues that the use of information and communications technology (ICT) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is highly context specific, and applies it within marketing practice. The resulting model is relational, iterative and context-sensitive, and considers marketing impact from the use of ICT as emerging over time. The Elijah Watt Sells Award program was established by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) in 1923 to recognize outstanding performance on the CPA Exam. Elijah Watt Sells was one of the first CPAs in the U.S., was active in the establishment of the AICPA and played a large role advancing professional education within the profession.

Dr. Davey Smith (’96) is leading a clinical trial that is currently underway to evaluate whether the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, given with the antibiotic azithromycin, can prevent hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
