When, in 2003, the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority (LVCVA) launched the tag line “What happens here, stays here,” it reinforced the idea, already supported by the media, that in Sin City everything is allowed. Looking at the COVID-19 crisis, one might wonder how, after being seen for years as a place without restrictions, Las Vegas could convince its tourists to respect some rigid safety guidelines. JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 24, 2021) –  Dr. Retha Gentry, associate professor in East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing, was recently named a 2021 Tennessee Rising Star Nurse Leader as part of the 40 Under 40 Nurse Leaders program.


Award selection was based on criteria determined by leaders from the Tennessee Action Coalition, Tennessee Nurses Association, and Tennessee Hospital Association. The honorees were chosen based on leadership among peers and others, professional growth and development, contribution to building a culture of health in their community, and commitment as a role model for health.

Wayne Dyer, and “Depth of Fields” featuring artworks by his former students, are on display through March 19 and March 26, respectively.

 The free code BuckyTransfer21 can be used by transfer applicants beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, through 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26.

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 17, 2021) – “Black Men in White Coats,” a documentary film by Dr. Dale Okorodudu, is available to view at no charge for East Tennessee State University students, faculty and staff through 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.

According to Okorodudu, fewer Black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978, and Black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. Only 2% of American doctors are Black men. In his documentary, Okorodudu dissects the systemic barriers preventing Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences for society at large.

East Tennessee State University is saddened by the passing of Dr. Brian Odle, who died Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, at the age of 53.

Dr. Odle, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, came to ETSU Bill Gatton College ofPharmacy in 2007. His unique teaching style combined memorable storytelling with practical knowledge. Dr. Odle was loved by his students, as well as faculty and staff.

Dr. Odle graduated from MTSU in 1990 with a degree in Biology. He then received his Doctor ofPharmacy degree from University of Tennessee, Memphis, in 1994. Dr. Odle completed a pharmacy practice residency at University of Maryland, …

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 16, 2021)  – The U.S. Department of Education has announced that East Tennessee State University will receive the federally funded Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $348,002 annually for five years to help more first-generation and low-income students and students with disabilities succeed and graduate.  ETSU has been a recipient of an SSS grant to support traditional and non-traditional students since 1976.

Content Analysis Of Hospital Reviews From Differing Sources: Does Review Source Matter?, Sayeedul Islam, Sara Mir, Caroline Defina, Carolina Silva

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice

Social media has had an impact on how patients find and evaluate medical professionals and their experiences of modern healthcare. Qualitative research in healthcare has increased its focus on social media. The present study examined 497 reviews of hospitals in the Pittsburgh area across three websites: Google, Yelp, and Healthgrades. Using computerized content analysis tools (CATA), we analyzed positive and negative comments to identify key themes. Key themes and words included “doctor,” “hospital,” “staff,” and “time.” These findings highlight the importance of medical staff to patient experience. Results indicated that Yelp had the lowest average rating. CATA also revealed that …

Purpose

Prosocial advertisers widely use assertive messages to encourage prosocial attitudes and behaviors, but ironically, assertive messages may cause reactance. By applying cultural theories and the reciprocity principle, this study aims to observe whether consumers’ responses to assertive messages hold across culturally different audiences (Americans vs South Koreans) and different consumption situations (price discount vs no discount).

Design/methodology/approach

The first series of reports in 2014 were initially prompted by the Center for American Progress report titled “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation” that ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership.
