Globalization, Expectations Model Of Economic Nationalism, And Consumer Behavior, Syed H. Akhter Jan 2007

Globalization, Expectations Model Of Economic Nationalism, And Consumer Behavior, Syed H. Akhter

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose – The goals of the paper are to propose, measure, and empirically test the expectations model of economic nationalism. The model posits that economic nationalism is reflected in people’s expectations of their government, domestic firms, and the general public, in terms of restricting the activities of foreign firms.

Design/methodology/approach – A confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to test the model, using the LISREL procedure.

Findings – Results show acceptable fit for the proposed model. Reliability of each of the three dimensions of economic nationalism is in the acceptable range. A nomological validity test showed that economic nationalism is related …

The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone Jan 2007

The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone

Marketing Faculty Publications

During the past 15 years, brand equity has been a priority topic for both practitioners and academics. In this paper, the authors propose a new framework for conceptualizing brand equity that distinguishes between brand equity, conceived of as an intrapersonal construct that moderates the impact of marketing activities, and brand value, which is the sale or replacement value of a brand. Such a distinction is important because, from a managerial perspective, the ultimate goal of brand management and brand equity research should be to understand how to leverage equity to create value.

Extracting Quantitative Informationfrom Nonnumeric Marketing Data: An Augmentedlatent Semantic Analysis Approach, Inigo Arroniz Jan 2007

Extracting Quantitative Informationfrom Nonnumeric Marketing Data: An Augmentedlatent Semantic Analysis Approach, Inigo Arroniz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the widespread availability and importance of nonnumeric data, marketers do not have the tools to extract information from large amounts of nonnumeric data. This dissertation attempts to fill this void: I developed a scalable methodology that is capable of extracting information from extremely large volumes of nonnumeric data. The proposed methodology integrates concepts from information retrieval and content analysis to analyze textual information. This approach avoids a pervasive difficulty of traditional content analysis, namely the classification of terms into predetermined categories, by creating a linear composite of all terms in the document and, then, weighting the terms according to …

Accomplishment Of Dual Focus In Exploration And Exploitation: The Influential Role Of The Customer Relationship Management (Crm, Janet Tinoco Jan 2007

Accomplishment Of Dual Focus In Exploration And Exploitation: The Influential Role Of The Customer Relationship Management (Crm, Janet Tinoco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizations that can successfully develop both radical and incremental innovations positively impact sustained competitive advantage, dramatically improving their chances of survival and success in both dynamic and stable environments (Han et al. 2001; Tushman and O'Reilly 1996). Experimentation and radical innovation are mandatory knowledge assets for competitive play in emerging markets, but efficiency and incremental innovation are essential for mature markets (He and Wong 2004; Tushman and O'Reilly 1996). The attainment of dual focus between radical and incremental innovation is challenging and calls for organizational architectures of sometimes conflicting processes, structure, and culture (cf, Tushman and O'Reilly 1996; Wind and …

The Technological Gaze In Advertising, Norah Campbell Jan 2007

The Technological Gaze In Advertising, Norah Campbell

Articles

This article is concerned with what a technological gaze might mean; what regimes of truth and what new modes of subjectivity are filtered through it. By drawing on television and print advertising, we can see the pervasiveness of a gaze that is technological in contemporary Western consumer culture. This article argues that, far from being a simple “ high-tech” effect, a technological gaze is a way of seeing that may be deconstructed. To this end, it will call on visual culture studies, feminism, film theory and Derridean deconstruction to highlight how high-tech images are cultural artefacts, which underscore contemporary imaginings …

Relational Benefits And Costs In Channel Distribution: A Dyadic Research From Buyers And Sellers Perspective, Dung The Vu Jan 2007

Relational Benefits And Costs In Channel Distribution: A Dyadic Research From Buyers And Sellers Perspective, Dung The Vu

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The benefits from having long–term relationships with customers have become a focal topic and have been widely discussed in the marketing literature (Dwyer, Schurr and Oh 1987; Reichheld and Sasser 1990; Reichheld 1993; Morgan and Hunt 1994; Walter, Ritter and Gemuden 2001). However, careful review of the literature indicates that the literature is deficient in several ways: (1) relational benefits are mostly examined in term of economic benefits, especially in b2b and channel distribution contexts, (2) there is limited number of studies examining cost dimensions, (3) there is lack of studies examines both benefits and costs from dyadic perspective (i.e. …

Vendor-Owned Inventory Management Arrangements In Retail: An Agency Theory Perspective, Manus Rungtusanatham, Elliot Rabinovich, Bryan Ashenbaum, Cynthia Wallin Blair Jan 2007

Vendor-Owned Inventory Management Arrangements In Retail: An Agency Theory Perspective, Manus Rungtusanatham, Elliot Rabinovich, Bryan Ashenbaum, Cynthia Wallin Blair

Faculty Publications

This paper undertakes two related tasks to augment current understanding regarding vendor-owned inventory management (VOIM) arrangements implemented in the retail industry. The first task formally juxtaposes three prevalent forms of VOIM arrangements (i.e., Consignment, Pay-On-Scan, and Scan-Based Trading) to one another and identifies three dimensions (i.e., Relevant Data Visibility, Timeliness of Information Release, and Shrink Responsibility) that serve to discriminate among them. The second task applies an Agency Theory lens to uncover differing profiles of characteristics underlying the retailer-vendor relationship across the Consignment, Pay-On-Scan, and Scan-Based Trading arrangements. These conceptual results contribute to and have implications for the science and …

International Trade, Consumer Behavior And Trust: Factors Affecting Agribusinesses In Developing Countries, Ronald Hampton, Ingrid Fromm, Bonani Nyhodo Jan 2007

International Trade, Consumer Behavior And Trust: Factors Affecting Agribusinesses In Developing Countries, Ronald Hampton, Ingrid Fromm, Bonani Nyhodo

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

With the increasing complexity of global food systems, producers in developing countries are faced with challenges associated with market access to developed and other developing countries. There is clear evidence that the fastest growing developing countries are the ones engaging in trade and participating in the global market. The difficulty for developing countries, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in those countries is the logistics and agreements needed to enter international markets and benefit from trade. Global production networks are becoming extremely complex. Arms-length trade is now confined to commodities with low returns, thus access to high-income yielding activities requires …

Achieving Adaptive Ends Through Equivocality: A Study Of Organizational Antecedents And Consequences, Stern Neill, Gregory M. Rose Jan 2007

Achieving Adaptive Ends Through Equivocality: A Study Of Organizational Antecedents And Consequences, Stern Neill, Gregory M. Rose

Marketing

Confronting complex situations is the hallmark of strategic decision-making. While these situations may be perceived as equivocal, organizations must cope, act, and thrive within such ambiguities. This study explores the manifestation and regulation of equivocality during strategic marketing decision-making. The results indicate that organizations that tolerate ambiguity perceive greater equivocality in problem situations and exhibit greater adaptive behavior; however, the findings come with a caveat: while experienced firms may enjoy these benefits, the situation is more complex for firms with limited product-market knowledge.

Developing The Organization's Sensemaking Capability: Precursor To An Adaptive Strategic Marketing Response, Stern Neill, Daryl Mckee, Gregory M. Rose Jan 2007

Developing The Organization's Sensemaking Capability: Precursor To An Adaptive Strategic Marketing Response, Stern Neill, Daryl Mckee, Gregory M. Rose

Marketing

Effective strategic planning demands that organizations develop an understanding of the forces shaping the situation by engaging the collective efforts and interpretive capabilities of various representatives of the organization. This study investigates the mechanisms by which such an understanding develops and, subsequently, shapes marketing strategy. Specifically, organizations are examined as sensemaking units stimulated by perceived environmental turbulence, cultural open-mindedness, and team functional diversity. These factors are modeled as determinants of an organization's sensemaking capability, which is comprised of communicative, interpretive, and analytical dimensions. This study argues that a developed sensemaking capability increases the potential range of strategic responses and, ultimately, …

Manufacturer Perceptions Of The Consequences Of Task And Emotional Conflict Within Domestic Channels Of Distribution, Gregory M. Rose, Aviv Shoham, Stern Neill, Ayalla Ruvio Jan 2007

Manufacturer Perceptions Of The Consequences Of Task And Emotional Conflict Within Domestic Channels Of Distribution, Gregory M. Rose, Aviv Shoham, Stern Neill, Ayalla Ruvio

Marketing

This study examines manufacturer' perceptions of task and emotional conflict in domestic channels of distribution. Both are expected to depend on three antecedents (centralization, esprit de corps, and communication barriers) and to affect performance relative to competitors and manufacturer's satisfaction directly and indirectly through strategy quality. The results support a positive link between task and emotional conflict and the deleterious effect of emotional conflict on satisfaction and performance.

Predicting Customer Responses To Direct Marketing : A Bayesian Approach, Wei Chen Jan 2007

Predicting Customer Responses To Direct Marketing : A Bayesian Approach, Wei Chen

Lingnan Theses

Direct marketing problems have been intensively reviewed in the marketing literature recently, such as purchase frequency and time, sales profit, and brand choices. However, modeling the customer response, which is an important issue in direct marketing research, remains a significant challenge. This thesis is an empirical study of predicting customer response to direct marketing and applies a Bayesian approach, including the Bayesian Binary Regression (BBR) and the Hierarchical Bayes (HB). Other classical methods, such as Logistic Regression and Latent Class Analysis (LCA), have been conducted for the purpose of comparison. The results of comparing the performance of all these techniques …

Internationalization Of Chinese Firms : A Contingent Resource Perspective, Xiaoyan Ma Jan 2007

Internationalization Of Chinese Firms : A Contingent Resource Perspective, Xiaoyan Ma

Lingnan Theses

This study examines the role of inward activities in the internationalization of firms from China and proposes a theoretical framework of internationalization using the contingent resource theory. Based on case studies of four Chinese enterprises and a survey of Chinese manufacturing firms, the study shows that by engaging in inward activities, firms may acquire the critical resources that can lead to outward activities and the internationalization process. Whether firms can succeed in internationalization is conditional upon several contingency factors including management motivation, absorptive capacity, resource fungibility, exploration strategy, exploitation strategy and government support. Lastly, we explore the implications of the …

Comment: Boosting Algorithms: Regularization, Prediction And Model Fitting, A. Buja, David Mease, A. Wyner

Faculty Publications

The authors are doing the readers of Statistical Science a true service with a well-written and up-to-date overview of boosting that originated with the seminal algorithms of Freund and Schapire. Equally, we are grateful for high-level software that will permit a larger readership to experiment with, or simply apply, boosting-inspired model fitting. The authors show us a world of methodology that illustrates how a fundamental innovation can penetrate every nook and cranny of statistical thinking and practice. They introduce the reader to one particular interpretation of boosting and then give a display of its potential with extensions from classification (where …

Strategic Partnerships And The Internationalisation Process Of Software Smes, Aileen Kennedy, Kathy Keeney Dec 2006

Strategic Partnerships And The Internationalisation Process Of Software Smes, Aileen Kennedy, Kathy Keeney

Conference papers

This research investigates the strategic partnering activities of software SMEs (small to medium sized enterprises), their motivations to engage in strategic partnerships as part of the internationalisation process, the key benefits achieved and the main challenges encountered. A qualitative research methodology focusing on Irish indigenous firms is used. Findings suggest that strategic partnerships were initiated to take advantage of firm synergy, reputation and credibility advantages. Partnerships also served as an important foreign market entry mechanism allowing firms to accelerate sales cycles and reduce risk in overseas markets. Challenges facing firms included partner selection and issues of control. Directions for further …

How And Why Chinese Firms Excel In 'The Art Of Price War', Knowledge@Smu Dec 2006

How And Why Chinese Firms Excel In 'The Art Of Price War', Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

When it comes to price wars, Wharton marketing professor Z. John Zhang can't help but notice that companies in the West and companies in China are quite literally worlds apart. In the West, Zhang says, the outbreak of a price war is viewed as the failure of managerial rationality. In China, the outbreak of a price war is considered a legitimate and effective business strategy. In a recent paper, Zhang and Dongsheng Zhou, a marketing professor at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, analyze two price wars that took place in China in the mid-1990s.

Viewing New Product Development Through The Real Options Lens: An Empirical Investigation Of The Market Reaction And The Role Of Contextual Factors, Vivek Shankar Natarajan

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

New product development is an important strategic decision for marketing managers. This study examined new product development related decisions by employing a real options framework. Specifically, new product development decisions are viewed as either an options creation or options exercise process. It evaluated the various types of new product decisions- development of new products, launching of new products, delaying launch of new products and exiting the market by using a real options lens. In doing so, the study sought to answer two research questions: 1. How does the market react to creation and exercise of real option? 2. How do …

Normative Perspectives For Ethical And Socially Responsible Marketing, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick Murphy Dec 2006

Normative Perspectives For Ethical And Socially Responsible Marketing, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This article presents a normative set of recommendations for elevating the practice of marketing ethics. The approach is grounded in seven essential perspectives involving multiple aspirational dimensions implicit in ethical marketing. More important, each basic perspective (BP), while singularly useful, is also integrated with the other observations as well as grounded in the extant ethics literature. This combination of BPs, adhering to the tenets of normative theory postulation, generates a connective, holistic approach that addresses some of the major factors marketing managers should consider if they desire to conduct their marketing campaigns with the highest levels of ethics and social …

Cultural Tendencies In Negotiation: A Comparison Of Finland, India, Mexico, Turkey, And The United States, Lynn E. Metcalf, Allan Bird, Mahesh Shankarmahesh, Zeynep Aycan, Jorma Larimo, Didimo Dewar Valdelamar

Marketing

In this era of increased global cooperation, a growing number of negotiators conduct business in multiple countries and, therefore, need access to a systematic comparison of negotiating tendencies across a wide range of countries. Empirical work systematically comparing variations across a range of cultures is scarce. A comparative analysis of negotiating tendencies in five countries is presented. This study establishes the utility of the [Salacuse, J. (1998) Ten ways that culture affects negotiating style: Some survey results. Negotiation Journal, 14(3): 221–235] framework in identifying country differences across five countries, representing five cultural clusters. Significant differences in negotiation orientations both …

A Framework For Supplier Relationship Management (Srm), Sabine Moeller, Martin Fassnacht, Sonja Klose Dec 2006

A Framework For Supplier Relationship Management (Srm), Sabine Moeller, Martin Fassnacht, Sonja Klose

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We perceive growing expectations concerning the impact of the purchasing function and the suppliers on overall value creation of a firm. Purchasing is the gateway between the external suppliers and the internal functions creating and delivering value for customers. This shift has incredibly enhanced the importance of the supplier base. While the old arm length collaboration is perfectly suitable for some suppliers others should be treated as close partners. However, an overall framework of Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) integrating such different types of suppliers along the course of the relationship remains desirable. Our research aims to contribute by developing a …

Nation Equity: Incidental Emotions In Country-Of-Origin Effects, Durairaj Maheswaran, Cathy Yi Chen Dec 2006

Nation Equity: Incidental Emotions In Country-Of-Origin Effects, Durairaj Maheswaran, Cathy Yi Chen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Different from past research on country-of-origin effects that has focused on cognitive factors, this article examines the impact of incidental emotions and cognitive appraisals associated with these emotions on country-of-origin effects. Experiment 1 compared anger and sadness and demonstrated that country of origin influenced evaluations only in the angry (vs. sad) condition where human (vs. situation) control was high. Experiment 2 further identified the effects of agency control using a different emotion, frustration. Based on these observations, this article suggests that, like brands, countries also have equity associated with them, termed nation equity, that has both performance and emotional components. …

Unilever's Michael Polk: It's All About 'Dislocating Ideas', Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

To drive home the subject of his speech at the recent third annual Wharton Marketing conference, Michael Polk, president of Unilever United States, flashed up a definition straight from the dictionary: 'Innovation: a new idea or method; a change in something established.' Polk, who manages such brands as Dove, Axe, Slim-Fast, Country Crock, Wishbone and Q-Tips, said innovation, not invention, lies at the heart of successful marketing campaigns.

Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova Nov 2006

Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The airlines have enormous needs for capital. Historically, capital spending was accountable for about 15 percent of annual airline revenues, more than double the average for manufacturing companies (Arpey, 1995). Access to capital is essential to the long-term viability and growth of the airline industry especially due to the capital-intensive nature of its business. However, highly cyclical nature of the airline business and its severe dependence on general economic condition make investments in the industry risky and uncertain. The airline's junk bond credit rating and enormous amounts of debt result in extremely high costs of capital. In addition, the airlines …
