Knowledge@SMU

Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, did not always enjoy the red carpet treatment in his two decades in China. The American fast food chain -- whose trademark Colonel is sometimes mistaken for Uncle Sam -- had to brave outbursts of Chinese nationalism, a food safety crisis and, sometimes, corrupt employees, according to Warren Liu, author of a new book, KFC in China: Secret Recipe for Success.

Pomegranates - New Woolbelt Opportunities, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Horticulture published reports

The capture of fresh surface water has the potential to open up areas of the 'woolbelt' of Western Australia to intensive agricultural industries.

In 2005-06 the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) investigated surface run-off in the medium rainfall zone (500-825 mm) of south-western Australia. It aimed to identify areas with sufficient freshwater resources and suitable land for intensive production.

The scoping study, based on broad scale modelling and land-soil capability assessment, found that there was some potential to develop large reliable water supplies to support perennial horticulture.

Optimal Lot-Sizing, Pricing, And Product Intergenerational Lifestyle Decisions For The Case Of Disruptive Innovations In Fashion, Ryan Samuel Sale Oct 2008

Optimal Lot-Sizing, Pricing, And Product Intergenerational Lifestyle Decisions For The Case Of Disruptive Innovations In Fashion, Ryan Samuel Sale

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to determine production schedules, production quantities, selling prices, and new product introduction timing to fulfill deterministic price-dependent demand for a series of products in such a way as to maximize profit per period.

In order to accomplish the above task, some main assumptions are made. First, it is assumed that the series of products being considered are associated with sequential non-disruptive innovations in technology as well as disruptive innovations in fashion. That is to say, the products represent subsequent generations in the same family of products in an industry that experiences repeated minor technological …

Leveraging News And Advertising To Introduce New Brands On The Web, Anca C. Micu, Esther Thorson Oct 2008

Leveraging News And Advertising To Introduce New Brands On The Web, Anca C. Micu, Esther Thorson

WCBT Faculty Publications

Previous studies using the integrated marketing communications framework have examined the increased effectiveness of combining either multiple media or different tactics when promoting a brand. This study considers integrating advertising and publicity to promote an unknown brand on the Internet. Experiment results indicate that when exposure to advertising combines with exposure to objective news about a new brand, effectiveness increases in terms of both brand attitudes and behavioral intentions. For sequencing exposures for technical brands, the news-then-advertising condition offers more effectiveness than the reverse sequence. When introducing non-technical brands on the Web though, using advertising first is more effective in …

Purpose – Based on their size, disposable income, and purchasing power, generation Y (Gen Y) consumers are viewed as the Holy Grail for marketers. Conversely, some of this group's behavior disturbs public policy officials, particularly when dealing with issues such as poor financial planning, bulimia and anorexia nervosa. The key question for both marketers and policy makers is what is the best way to understand the Gen Y segment? The vanity concept is used in this study as a way to understand the Gen Y consumer segment. The purpose of this paper is to examine vanity perceptions (cross-nationally and by …

Real-Time Evaluation Of Email Campaign Performance, Andre Bonfrer, Xavier Dreze Oct 2008

Real-Time Evaluation Of Email Campaign Performance, Andre Bonfrer, Xavier Dreze

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We develop a testing methodology that can be used to predict the performance of e-mail marketing campaigns in real time. We propose a split-hazard model that makes use of a time transformation (a concept we call virtual time) to allow for the estimation of straightforward parametric hazard functions and generate early predictions of an individual campaign's performance (as measured by open and click propensities). We apply this pretesting methodology to 25 e-mail campaigns and find that the method is able to produce in an hour and fifteen minutes estimates that are more accurate and more reliable than those that the …

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan Aug 2008

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan

DLPS Faculty Publications

China, the most populous country in the world, is also a nation of great diversity. In addition to the majority population of Han Chinese, there are some 55 officially recognized national minorities--including Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, Zhuang, Dai, and Gaoshan. The folklore of these minorities is often obscure and difficult to find in the English-speaking world, as is information about the people, their cultural histories, and their traditional customs. This book fills a gap by offering more than 50 representative folktales from China's minorities, as well as background information on each of the ethnic groups.

An Introduction To The Special Issue On Marketing Of High-Technology Products, Services And Innovations, Shikhar Sarin, Jakki Mohr

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

We are pleased to introduce this special issue on marketing of high-technology products and innovations. High-technology industries are distinguished by increasing turbulence, and time-and information-intensive environments (Mohr, Sengupta, & Slater, in press). Additionally, issues related to unique characteristics like network effects, dominant design, and technological standards increase complexity in identifying, implementing, and evaluating marketing strategies in such environments (Hills & Sarin, 2003). This special issue features papers that contribute theoretically, methodologically, and substantively to enhancing our understanding of marketing strategies in high-tech environments.

Implementing Assessment In An Outcome-Based Marketing Curriculum, Norm A. Borin, Lynn E. Metcalf, Brian C. Tietje

Marketing

This article describes the development and implementation of assessment in our new outcome-based marketing curriculum (described fully in Borin, Metcalf, and Tietje 2007). Outcomes for the marketing curriculum were specified at the program, department, course, and lesson levels. Direct embedded assessments as well as indirect assessment methods were used to gauge student achievement. Results indicate that, on both self-reported (indirect) and direct, as well as non-embedded and embedded assessments, significant value-added learning occurred. We chronicle the stages in developing and implementing an assessment plan, and reflect on our experiences in the process to provide a roadmap for other marketing departments …

The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean Aug 2008

The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The omnipresence of consumption in advanced societies is indisputable; spaces designed to facilitate consumption (or means of consumption) are one aspect of that presence. On the surface, these spaces appear to be quite harmless dreamworlds full of possibilities, but at another level they are highly instrumental, composed of various mechanisms that work to sell commodities through the manipulation of consumer behavior. I argue that consumption spaces express a logic of movement, and a consumption logistics, that is based on the commodity form and relatable to warfare that works to domesticate consumers into the commodity system. I engage in an exploratory …

해외 복수 시장 진출 기업의 제품 매출 이륙 시점 예측 모형에 관한 연구, Jai Hak Chung, Ho Kyung Chung

Asia Marketing Journal

The objective of our study is to provide an exploratory model for forecasting sales take-off timing of a product in the context of multi-national markets. We evaluated the usefulness of key predictors such as multiple market information, product attributes, price, and sales for the forecasting of sales take-off timing by applying the suggested model to monthly sales data for PDP and LCD TV provided by a Korean electronics manufacturer. We have found some important results for global companies from the empirical analysis. Firstly, innovation coefficients obtained from sales data of a particular product in other markets can provide the most …
