The study collected responses from a purposively sampled group of experienced decision-makers with authority over new product selection. A total of 86 B2B decision-makers responded to the invitation to participate

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan Jan 2024

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Trust is an important component of any purchasing situation. In an online setting, trust becomes even more important as buyer and seller are not able to directly interact with one another. Compounding the situation is the fact that the consumer cannot directly experience the product under consideration. Organizations have attempted to address this shortcoming by allowing third parties to offer reviews of the product in question. This paper addresses how consumers process these product reviews.

By rooting this paper in trust and uncertainty reduction theory, a testable model was developed. The model was tested, and in general, more helpful reviews, …

The Black Lives Matter Movement: A Systemic Crisis That Expands Crisis Response Theory, Pam Richardson-Greenfield, Alyssa Reynolds, Ryan Cruz, Monique Bell

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Relevance to Marketing Educators, Researchers, and/or PractitionersIn response to George Floyd’s death, a variety of organizations posted messages against racism and some began to openly support Black Lives Matter, often by name, in their corporate communication initiatives. With promises of financial commitments to uplift Black communities, calls for action, and initiatives to support internal change—large and small companies, non-profits and universities—could be perceived as courageous for establishing new protocols to support such a warranted change. However, in the era of “woke washing,” or inauthentic social justice messaging, the need to assess the authenticity of corporate statements of support …

Product Elimination Decision And Its Impact On Consumers: The Special Case Of A Local Speedway, Mark Mitchell, Jacob Voegel, Michael Smith

Atlantic Marketing Journal

After 60+ years of operation, Myrtle Beach Speedway was closed and the property sold. The new owners will redevelop the property for commercial and residential purposes. Businesses routinely eliminate products for a variety of reasons, including under-performance and/or a desire to redeploy those resources elsewhere. What is often overlooked is the impact on consumers. In addition to reducing fan access to racing, a closed race track removes a racing opportunity for aspiring race car drivers and crew members. It can also mean shuttering tracks that once had historical significance. The history of raceway closures in the Myrtle Beach, SC area …

Influencers Endorsement Advertising Methods On Different Social Media Platforms, Sophia R. Annaloro Jan 2024

Influencers Endorsement Advertising Methods On Different Social Media Platforms, Sophia R. Annaloro

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Social media marketing has opened a unique spot for Social Media Influencers. With their fame comes a lot of power over their follower's actions. Many things are at play when an influencer works with a brand to create promotional content for a product. Flow theory suggests that an abrupt advertisement does not match the pace or aesthetic of the content they are currently consuming. When one's viewing is abruptly interrupted by an advertisement, the consumers are now aggravated by the product. Distinctive characteristics of different platforms are likely to develop flow differently. This study analyzed how passive versus active product …

Keep It Simple? Effects Of Color And Age On Product Packaging, Saamiya R. Mohammed, Alex Robinson Jan 2024

Keep It Simple? Effects Of Color And Age On Product Packaging, Saamiya R. Mohammed, Alex Robinson

Undergraduate Research Posters

Packaging has always played a pivotal role in consumer decision-making. Specifically, the color of the visual elements placed on product packaging have garnered significant attention for their potential to influence consumer perceptions and behaviors. Color is believed to have emotional/psychological associations across cultural and societal contexts.

On the one hand, research has noted that the use of grayscale does not elicit an emotional response (Clarke and Costall, 2008) and this may be because they’re considered passive colors (Bottomley and Doyle, 2006). Conversely, Jacobs et. al (1991), found that black is associated with being expensive and powerful. Based on the conflicting …

Parasocial Relationships In Variety Live Streaming: How It Can Affect Attitudes And Buying Intention Toward Sponsors, Megan Burroughs, Deborah Diazgranados

Undergraduate Research Posters

Online streaming and video platforms have become a popular form of entertainment as opposed to traditional media like movies and TV shows. Similar to traditional media, viewers often relate to and form one-sided relationships with actors/creators, known as parasocial relationships. Actors and creators can then leverage that relationship to advertise and market products to their audience. The primary objective of this study was to understand if perceived credibility and loyalty towards a streamer fuel parasocial relationships and how perceived credibility and parasocial relationships with an online live streamer influence attitude towards a sponsored brand and purchasing intention. It was predicted …

A Marketing Analysis Of Mid-American Conference Universities, Charles Donald Borus

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Across the country, millions of high school seniors make the decision on where to attend college, basing these decisions on a variety of factors. For a high school student living in the Midwestern United States, they are starved for choice. Larger universities in this region come with an established reputation of academic prowess. Smaller institutions such as those that are a part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) offer all the same experiences-just with a smaller student population. With competition from larger universities in the area, how can universities in the MAC attract and retain students? How can this information be …

Resource Affluence And Sustainable Consumer Behavior, Liguo Liu Jan 2024

Resource Affluence And Sustainable Consumer Behavior, Liguo Liu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While resource affluence is desired by most individuals, it may not always be advantageous for a collective group. Recent research documents some “dark side” effects associated with resource affluence, such as reducing people’s willingness to help others or leading to unethical behaviors (e.g., Piff et al. 2012; Vohs et al. 2016). Building on this body of work and advances in sustainability research, this study investigates the impact of financial affluence on sustainable consumer behavior. Using a multi-method approach (archival data and experiments), this study demonstrates that financial affluence leads to less sustainable consumer behaviors compared to a control group, across …

Identifying Accessibility Improvement Opportunities For Global Environmental Communication Websites, Alicia Mason, Josh Compton, Sakshi Bhati

Faculty Submissions

Digital environmental information presented with low web accessibility reduces parti-cipation in environmental advocacy and information seeking behaviors for many people with disabilities, creating a consequential digital divide. We use WEB AIM computer automated analysis of web accessibility to assess the general accessibility of online environmental communication messages. Results show 95.3% of the popular websites in our sample had indicators of potentially critical accessibility errors. Our findings highlight the importance of addressing digital environmental information accessibility shortcomings so that educational, informational and persuasive environ-mental messages can increase environmental literacy of vulnerable populations and help to bridge the digital divide.

Understanding The Importance Of Brand Equity On Higher Education: An Empirical Study Of Irish Public Universities, Javier Casanoves-Boix, Ana Cruz-Garcia, Sonia García-Lafuente, Mónica Pérez-Sánchez

Dept. of Marketing & International Business Publications

The today’s university education exposes that the argument that stu- dents have an authentic and valuable voice in the decisions that impact their learning and education has become a phenomenon known as 'stu-dent voice' (Matthews and Dollinger, 2023). Furthermore, Boy-murodova y Qosimova (2024) call to action for stakeholders in higher education to prioritize and invest in quality assurance initiatives as in-dispensable components of institutional effectiveness and academic ex-cellence. According to Lafuente, Cifuentes, and Faura (2024), higher education curricula must incorporate competencies that prepare gradu-ates with the necessary knowledge and values.

In Ireland, there are nine universities that account for a …

Attitudes Toward Lccp Strategies: A Comprehensive Framework, Alexey V. Semenov, Arilova Randrianasolo Jan 2024

Attitudes Toward Lccp Strategies: A Comprehensive Framework, Alexey V. Semenov, Arilova Randrianasolo

Funded Scholarship

Within recent years, the choice of whether to employ local culture consumer positioning (LCCP) strategies has gained considerable interest in both international marketing research and practice, particularly due to the recent rise in nationalism around the world. This current research focuses on the individual-level drivers of consumer attitudes toward LCCP strategies by creating a more comprehensive framework of the antecedents of attitudes toward LCCP strategies. Utilizing an institution-based view, social identity, self-verification, and personality trait theories, we develop a framework that encompasses elemental personality traits (agreeableness and need for material resources), perceptions of national identity, international travel, world-mindedness, and national …

The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow Jan 2024

The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many retailers that manage product assortments believe that “more is better”. We challenge this conventional wisdom by demonstrating that a retailer may face more price-sensitive demand for existing categories after a category expansion. While introducing a new category to a store may increase the demand for the existing ones, this increase sometimes suggests a movement towards the steeper part of the demand curve and an increase in price sensitivity. We build a model of multi-category purchases with transportation costs and generate a series of theoretical predictions of the changes in price sensitivity after category expansion. We then estimate the model …

HCL’s simple low-cost mascot has consistently stimulated positive interactions between the library staff/faculty and students, community members and university officials. HCL’s library mascot has created a cult-like following that watches and comments on his adventures. This current discussion indicates how any library can create their own mascot regardless of budget restrictions and time commitments.

Triangulating The Likelihood Of Confusion: Linguistics And Consumer Surveys, Eric D. Derosia, Jesse Egbert, Thomas Lee Jan 2024

Triangulating The Likelihood Of Confusion: Linguistics And Consumer Surveys, Eric D. Derosia, Jesse Egbert, Thomas Lee

Faculty Publications

This Article highlights contributions that linguistic analysis can offer in the assessment of the likelihood of confusion in trademark infringement cases. Parties in such cases often engage an expert witness to conduct a survey that measures the likelihood of consumer confusion. We show how an expert linguist can provide important, nonintuitive dynamics of corroboration. We introduce “expert triangulation” as a conceptual framework to analyze whether, and to what extent, experts in linguistics and consumer surveys can corroborate one another. That is, having two different sources of empirical evidence which lead to similar conclusions should be a benefit to the courts, …

Research on moral decision-making in organizations has expanded significantly over the past few decades. In this review, we build on prior comprehensive reviews on the topic to provide an updated view of the field, based on the latest findings. We first provide a brief historical overview of influential theories of moral decision-making and then describe the individual characteristics, interpersonal factors, and organizational factors that have been shown to influence people's morally relevant choices, as well as the cognitive, affective, and even physiological processes at play. We then provide a more critical view of the field and focus on what we …

This report provides rich insight into the state of diversity and inclusion in the West Australian marketing and commercially creative industries. While most respondents say that diversity and inclusion is important and should be a business priority, the discrimination and exclusion experienced is still substantial.

There is a significant difference in views between people working in agencies compared to in-house marketing roles. More in-house marketers see their workplaces as diverse and inclusive and say team members and senior leadership value DEI, compared to those in agencies. While 82% of in-house marketers say people can succeed at their workplace irrespective of …

Data were collected from 304 customers of eco-label hotels in Hong Kong. The PROCESS Macro plug-in software model (6) was employed to assess the hypotheses’ direct, indirect, and triple mediating effects. However, the triple mediation effects of biospheric and egoistic values, pro-environmental attitude, and green patronage intention between the impact of HELC and green word-of-mouth …

Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Consumer Choice: A Case Study Of Reviews By Youtubers, Faisal Fasih Jan 2024

Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Consumer Choice: A Case Study Of Reviews By Youtubers, Faisal Fasih

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

Consumer participation is vital for businesses, especially in online markets, because potential customers cannot physically check the product. One of the standard options is to watch the review on YouTube, a source of a host of information, including consumer-related products. However, it also provides a fertile ground for disseminating misinformation, including fake reviews of consumer goods, because the contents of the information are unverified. Fake reviews can create information asymmetry, lead to the dismissal of genuine reviews, and ultimately reduce market competition. Therefore, one would have expected that the popularity of YouTube would decrease as a source of information access. …
