English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead

One highly visible, often stigmatized feature of Chicano Spanish is lexical innovation due to intimate contact with English and the mainstream culture. As noted in table 1, these Anglicisms are the result of varying degrees of host language adaptation and integration and include at least three distinct types of innovations: the lexical switch, the loanword, and the calque.

Galdós's Segunda Manera: Rhetorical Strategies And Affective Response, Linda M. Willem

This book explores the change that occurred in the writings of Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós when he entered his segunda manera in 1881 with the publication of La desberedada, his first contemporary novel. By studying his novels in light of how their stories are told, Linda Willem shows that La desberedada marks the beginning of a more sophisticated and varied mode of narrative presentation in Galdós's work. Through close readings of his first seven contemporary novels, Willem shows how the affective response associated with various narrative devices plays a role in the rhetorical strategies of each text.

O Caramuru Y Caramurú: Sus Relaciones En La Formación De Un Protoimaginario Nacional Uruguayo, Maria Cristina Burgueno

This article examines the inter-textual relations between the novel Caramurú (1848?) by the Uruguayan writer Alejandro Magariños Cervantes, and the epic poem O Caramuru (1781) by the Portuguese Friar Jose de Santa Rita Durão. The thesis of the article is that these literary works reflect the deep cultural and political connections between Uruguay and Brazil, and how these links were present at the time when –surrounded by uncertainties about the viability of the new state—the elaboration of a Uruguayan national identity started. Jean Cocteau's one-act play, La Voix humaine [The Human Voice], consists entirely of a monologue by a woman engaged in a final phone conversation with her lover. Alone in her room, she desperately clings to the telephone as her only link to the man who has left her for someone else. Although this agonizing portrait of abandonment and despair bears little resemblance to Almodóvar's multi-charactered comedic romp through the streets of Madrid in Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios [Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown], Cocteau's play has been named as the …

Text And Intertext: James Whale's Frankenstein In Víctor Erice's El Espíritu De La Colmena, Linda M. Willem

Víctor Erice's use of clips from James Whale's Frankenstein as the basis for actions by his young protagonist, Ana, in El espíritu de la colmena has led critics to speculate on the symbolic meaning of the monster within that Spanish film. For Virginia Higginbotham the monster represents Franco's Spain, a country that has lost both its memory and its moral sense (116-20). For Marvin D'Lugo the monster stands for the mysterious, the unknown, the different, and the deviant, all of which Ana identifies with as she defines herself as an oppositional spirit (2862). This book is a case study of the relationship between art and oppression. It is the first book devoted to Gomez-Arcos, a member of a "lost" generation of Spanish dramatists who were silenced during the Franco era.
