Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles
Tolstoy And Clio: An Exploration In Historiography Through Literature, David Wiles
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper explores issues in historiography and history as reflected in some of the literary and didactic works of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). An artist of eternal merit, Tolstoy's creativity manifests his intense personal, artistic, and philosophical conflicts. In addressing the 'accursed questions' afflicting his times and society, Tolstoy became the muse of nineteenth-century Russia, but his works embody essential themes in historiography, literature, and history. Attempting to impose a unitary vision upon the rich diversity of reality, yet failing, in his literary works Tolstoy explores the inaccessibility and multiplicity of historical causation, and the dilemmas of freedom and necessity, along …

The Great Day: A Fantasy Play In Five Acts, Six Scenes By Vladimir Kirshon, Christopher Lee Philips
The Great Day: A Fantasy Play In Five Acts, Six Scenes By Vladimir Kirshon, Christopher Lee Philips
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Vladimir Kirshon was a proletarian playwright of the Soviet Union who died in the Great Purge. The thesis presents an English version of the author's last play, The Great Day, which is preceded by an introduction which places Kirshon and his plays in their proper historical context. The introduction details Kirshon's political and artistic background and his politico-literary position as a playwright. The introduction and analysis of the play produce an understanding of Vladimir Kirshon as a Soviet proletarian playwright and an understanding of the spirit in which The Great Day was written.

Chekhov, The Doctor As Dramatist: A Study Of The Four Major Plays, Gloria Rhoads
Masters Theses
Studying the relationship of Chekhov's being a doctor to his being a dramatist reveals one reason for the scientific objectivity in his writing. Moreover, extensive reading of his letters and notes as well as careful readings of his plays leaves little doubt that he himself considered that his career as a doctor had a great impact on the plays he created.
Chekhov felt that a writer must not beautify reality or gloss over it but carefully present it as it is. He wrote that the writer must renounce subjectivity and report the grime of life along with the good; he …
