Second language (L2) Russian research identifies listening comprehension as the least developed language ability among university students and points to the importance of listening instruction in Russian programs (e.g., Rifkin 2005; Comer 2012a; Isurin 2013). For example, Rifkin (2005, 11) states that students typically exhibit an “intermediate-low level of L2 listening proficiency” after completion of a 4-year Russian program. However, when the target language has inflectional morphology, these two parts of the language-learning task intersect in the paradigms of grammatical word forms because each open-class lexeme has a number of forms that allow it to express various combinations of grammatical categories. In this volume, I have examined a number of works of nineteenth-century realist fiction from England and Russia, using the double interpretive method recommended by Fredric Jameson in The Political Unconscious. In particular, I have employed the dialectical double hermeneutic suggested by Jameson, who argues that the most productive approach to literary texts is to consider them from the double perspective of ideology and utopia. My original intent was to research Russian dialects by means of English words recently borrowed into the Russian language. I was going to visit various cities and villages of Russia, ascertain to what degree key words had penetrated the local dialect, and record the pronunciation of these words. I suspected that some historical phonological rules (i.e. palatalization, assimilation, de-voicing, etc.) were no longer in effect. I was also interested in the semantic variation that was sure to be evident in the different regions of Russia.
