Are We The Last Generation Writing Poetry In Russian?, Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

How did my own poetry change after the war that began in February 2022? From the initial shock of the war – to a tragic realization that my own language is forever compromised by being shared with, and indeed usurped by, the aggressor. Personal observations are shared by a biologist and poet.

(In Russian), Slav Gratchev

Books Published by MU Libraries in MDS

Victor Fet

Books Published by MU Libraries in MDS

Review Of La Bella España: El Teatro De Lope De Vega En La Rusia Soviética Y Postsoviética By Veronika Ryjik, Slav N. Gratchev

Modern Languages Faculty Research

There are certain writers whose importance only grows with time, and the longer the distance that separates us from them, the more facets of their genius they demonstrate to us, the readers of the twenty-first century. One of these authors is Lope de Vega. The new book of Veronika Ryjik now makes another major contribution to the scholarship of a great master who was well known and admired in Soviet Russia. It is indeed a serious study and one that fermented in the mind of the scholar for more than ten years – the true symbol of a truly remarkable …

Introduction. Viktor Shklovsky’S Heritage In Literature, Arts, And Philosophy, Slav N. Gratchev, Howard Mancing

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This book aims to examine the heritage of Victor Shklovsky in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this end, we drew upon colleagues from eight different countries across the world – USA, Canada, Russia, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Hong Kong – in order to bring the widest variety of points of view on the subject. But we also wanted this book to be more than just another collection of essays of literary criticism: we invited scholars from different disciplines – literature, cinematography, and philosophy – who have dealt with Shklovsky’s heritage and saw its practical application in their …

Introduction. Dialogues With Shklovsky: The Duvakin Interviews 1967-1968., Slav N. Gratchev, Irina Evdokimova

Modern Languages Faculty Research

Dialogues with Shklovsky: The Duvakin Interviews 1967–1968 reflects the spirit of times—when the most dramatic events of the twentieth century were happening in Russia and the USSR. The first English translation of the 1967–1968 interviews with the founder of the Formalist School of literary theory, Viktor Shklovsky, this volume offers a slice of Russian micro-history that relies on the living voice of that history. Through the transcription of a six-hour phono-document, the readers will hear the voice of a real participant in events that for the longest time in the USSR were forbidden to be discussed or written about.

Don Quixote In Russia In The 1920s-1930s: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Jan 2019

Don Quixote In Russia In The 1920s-1930s: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This study logically continues my previous examination of the perception of Don Quixote in Russia throughout the early twentieth century and how this perception changed over time. In this new article, which will be the third in a sequence of five, I will again use a number of materials inaccessible to English-speaking scholars to demonstrate how the perception of Don Quixote by Russian intelligentsia shifted from being skeptical to complete admiration and even glorification of the hero. Don Quixote was increasingly compared with Prometheus, the most powerful and most romanticized personage of Greek methodology. Indeed, “. . . начав юмористический …

This book aims to examine the heritage of Mikhail Bakhtin in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this end, we drew upon colleagues from eight different countries across the world--United States, Canada, Spain, Great Britain, France, Russia, Chile, and Japan--in order to bring the widest variety of points of view on the subject. Around Sonja: On The First Russian Translation, Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

The first Russian translation of Wonderland was published anonymously in 1879 as Sonja v tsarstvie diva (Sonja in a Kingdom of Wonder, hereinafter referred to as Sonja).1 Deep Victorian mysteries surround it. Its translator remains unknown—but a hint from Lewis Carroll himself leads one to Russian aristocrats, patrons of the arts, and famous writers. Its readership is undocumented, but the faces of children who most likely first read this book are still well known in Russia today, having been painted by the most famous nineteenth-century Russian artists. Further, as one looks carefully at the text itself, one …

Toward The History Of Study Of Symbiogenesis: On The English Translation Of B. M. Kozo-Polyansky’S A New Principle Of Biology (1924), Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

We reproduce the text by Victor Fet, which was read on 6 October 2011 at the Moscow Society of Naturalists during the presentation of new book translation (B.M. Kozo- Polyansky. Symbiogenesis: A New Principle of Evolution / transl. by Victor Fet; ed. by Victor Fet & Lynn Margulis. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 2010. 138 p.) This half- forgotten book by Boris M. Kozo-Polyansky was known only by name to Western biologists. Victor Fet gives a brief history of this new translation, enthusiastically initiated and supported by Lynn Margulis (1938–2011), a famous naturalist who was always eager to gave credit …

Beheading First: On Nabokov's Translation Of Lewis Carroll, Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Anya v Strane chudes, young Nabokov’s 1923 Russian translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, contains an intentionally shifted statement “beheading first, sentence later” compared to Lewis Carroll’s “sentence first, verdict later”. The shift is fitting for the 1920s children émigré audience.

Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva Jan 2000

Revival Of Traditions In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Anara Tabyshalieva

History Faculty Research

The collapse of the Soviet Union gave the unexpected gift of independence in 1991 to five new states in Central Asia-Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. In common with other post-socialist countries, these states are currently going through a transition period characterized by serious and worsening social and economic problems. The 55 million people who live in the region are facing problems of overpopulation, a chronic decline in living standards, and ecological crisis. There has also been a revival of patriarchal traditions and a reversal of female emancipation: The combination of Soviet and Muslim components has led to an …

Remembering Societal Trauma : Catastrophic Events Of The Twentieth Century In The Soviet Union And The Shaping Of Cultural Memory In Soviet Children's Political Literature, Sean Ozzie Simpkins

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, there have been several waves of interest in establishing more contemporary relations with Russia, punctuated by failure and frustration. Many who would deal with the Russians have little factual information concerning Russian history, and are guided largely by some combination of good will, self interest, and outmoded structural assumptions concerning Russia and the Russian experience (Wedel 1998). This ignorance, in turn, contributes to negative perceptual and behavioral responses on the part of the Russians to these overtures, and any that may follow. The result can lead to a misreading of intent and …
