My original intent was to research Russian dialects by means of English words recently borrowed into the Russian language. I was going to visit various cities and villages of Russia, ascertain to what degree key words had penetrated the local dialect, and record the pronunciation of these words. I suspected that some historical phonological rules (i.e. palatalization, assimilation, de-voicing, etc.) were no longer in effect. I was also interested in the semantic variation that was sure to be evident in the different regions of Russia.

Business language courses were taught at American universities as early as the 1920’s but did not gain widespread acceptance until the 1980’s. A major reason for the growth of Language for Special Purposes (LSP) was the report of the President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies, which focused on the decline of language skills in the U.S. and stressed the need for professionally linked foreign language courses. Linguistic skills, the report stated, are a plus when combined with professional knowledge in fields such as engineering and business.1

When Russia converted to Christianity in A.D. 988, it accepted the religious traditions of Byzantine culture. Through one of these religious traditions, the developing art form of icons, the image of Christ entered the social and cultural lifestyles of the ancient Russians. In the icons Christ appears as a somber, mystical and primitively painted figure. His image acquired historical, philosophical, and ethical significance in a series of 19th century paintings by A.A. The research for this project was initially conducted under the assumption that Finnish lexical borrowings from Swedish would considerably differ from its Russian counterparts. However, as more data was collected from various semantic fields, it became evident that the borrowings presented general borrowing patterns across the board not only in Swedish and Russian but also in other Germanic and Slavic languages. It focuses on the constraints placed on the composers by the totalitarian regime and how these individual composers were able to not only survive, but leave a greater impact on the development and style of music than the state that was constraining them. The literary and philosophical theory of semiotics considers signs and symbols. Pragmatics is the branch of semiotics that explicates the practical effects of a given interpretation according to its context. Through analyzing the pragmatic context of Crime and Punishment, one can begin to uncover the depth of meaning that the novel delivers. Tondelli opens his Un weekend postmoderno. Cronache dagli anni Ottanta declaring an intention opposite to the display of amnesia. In the long table of contents of his book, he writes down everything, in an excruciating streaming of details, so that the table of content becomes an exhaustive index of names and ideas. Yet, hidden within the hundreds of analytical snapshots, one of its many characters mentions the importance of dissimulation. "Changing hands one last time, in the 1950s, for many years the icons at BJU lived as it were incognito, the details of their glamorous origins largely forgotten. Reuniting this core group-the cream of the Hammers' imperial icons--with others that passed into American museums in the 1930s allows us to appreciate the full significance of Armand and Victor Hammer's foray into marketing icons Americans.Viewed in isolation, most of their "imperial icons" are perhaps no mo than a poignant reminder of the vast destruction and dislocation of Orthodox culture during the Soviet Cultural Revolution. Vladimir Mečiar, the first Prime Minister of independent Slovakia, is often criticized for his suppression of free media, political repression, and the widespread corruption of his government from 1993-1998. Mečiar has also been attacked for his economic policies, which critics suggest slowed down privatization and left Slovakia in a huge debt crisis. A closer look at macroeconomic data, however, demonstrates an impressive economic record for Mečiar, who oversaw several years of strong GDP growth, and relatively low levels of unemployment and inflation.
