Arts And Crafts In Late Imperial Russia: Reviving The Kustar Art Industries, Wendy Salmond

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Arts and Crafts in Late Imperial Russia is the first account of the revival of Russia's kustar art industriespeasant crafts of wood carving, toy production, lacemaking, embroidery, and weaving - from its origins in the populist debates and philanthropic impulses of the early 1870s to its climax in 1913, with the display of its achievements at the Second All-Russian Kustar Exhibition in St. Petersburg. Like every Western nation in the late nineteenth century Russia experienced a widespread movement to revive its traditional arts and crafts. This study uncovers the complex motivations that led a broad cross section of educated Russian …

Arson, Law And Society In Russia: Contemporary Issues And Historical Perspectives, Cathy A. Frierson Aug 1995

Arson, Law And Society In Russia: Contemporary Issues And Historical Perspectives, Cathy A. Frierson

History

The following report consists of two essays examining the phenomenon of arson in Russia in two periods of accelerated social change and reform: during the post-Emancipation era (1861-1905) and in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In both essays, the author examines the crime of arson as an aspect of Russia's century-long struggle to establish an effective rule of law in society and in the state. During both periods under review here, Russia was without an effective rule of law. One hundred years ago, during the post-Emancipation era, arson in rural Russia was commonplace and served as a reminder of …

[Introduction To] Apocalyptic Realism: The Science Fiction Of Arkady And Boris Strugatsky, Yvonne Howell

Bookshelf

The brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky have been Russia's most popular science fiction writers since their first publication appeared in 1959. The enormous and consistent popularity of their works over three decades of fluctuating political and literary conditions is all the more interesting when one considers that their primary readership has been the Russian scientific-technical intelligentsia - a sector of society whose values and attitudes were instrumental in transforming the Soviet Union. This lively and original study of the Strugatskys' development as writers and as spokesmen for a generation of Russian scientists is as timely as it is unique. It …

The Origin Of Nyc’S Nickname The Big Apple, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The expression "The Big Apple," meaning "something special, out of the ordinary, world class" is traced from its adoption as the nickname of New York City in 1971 back through time, to the jazz culture of the 1930s and ultimately to its apparent origins in racing jargon in the early decades of the 20th century. © 1993 Maney Publishing.
