This paper is a report of the findings of a reseach on minarets of old mosques in Sumatera and Jawa done by means of survey method and library study. Thirteen minarets of old mosques were observed and analyzed. The thirteen minarets show similarities in terms of form and style. There is a basic pattern of relation between the mosque and minarets in terms of layout. In terms of the number of the minarets, the mosques generally have one minaret each although some of them have two or even four. The main function of minaret in a mosque is a place …

From an investigation on a number of Banten archives recorded in the archives list of The National Archives of the Republic Indonesia (ANRI), it is found that there are only two letters of the Sultan of Banten in ANRI. One letter bears the number Banten archive No. 18 and the other one in No. 61. The letter in archieve No. 18 is a receipt for a payment made by Abul Mafakhir Muhammad Aliudin to Steve Nicolaas Meijbaum which was signed on November 1st, 1781. The Sorosuwan Palace played a major role for the kingdom of Banten in the period between the 16th century and the 19th century. In such a long period of time, the Sorosuwan Palace experienced ups and downs in its development. Based on a library research, it is known that the Sorosuwan Palace was renovated several times. This is most clearly seen in the differences found in the representations of the Sorosuwan Palace in the maps of Banten of 1596, of 1624 and of 1726. This volume represents a feisty defense of John Neihardt's literary role in crafting the classic presentation of the voice of a Lakota "holy man" in Black Elk Speaks. Holloway explicitly addresses a variety of criticisms leveled against Neihardt that in one way or another accuse him of supplanting Black Elk's voice with one resonating with the biases of his own cultural and religious vision. The aim of comedy as a work of drama is to entertanin and ciritcize by making fun of the human characters and flaws or helpless situation. Comedy also makes fun of people from the county side who imitate the ways the Parisians dress and talk in exaggerated way. The works of the well-known comedy writers like Moli re (1622-1673), Marivaux (1688-1763) and Beaumarchais (1732-1799) deal with universal characters and problems, stereotypical human flaws, for example, stinginess, hypocrisy, arrogance, and snobbism.

Synonymous verbs are often confusing because on the one hand verbal pairs have the same meanings but on the other they cannot replace one another in all contexts. This paper examines the contexts of synonymous verbal pairs in French. It shows that aspects that limit the synonymity of a set of words are verbal meanings, semantic characteristics of accompanying words, verbal valence, syntactyc structure, and the commoness of usage of the words. The observation shows that 1) the contexts of the synonymous pairs cannot replace one another although the meanings of both are the same, and 2) the difference in …

This study reveals that some models of comercial breaks appeared at the Indonesian private television program, e.g. shampoo and soap advertisement, could invite some interpretation and functions. Their appearance could reflect women's surrender facing the action of violence. These article discusses about the metaphor of the women's body and how it becomes a medium that is constructed by two aspects, the power and the beauty. The result shows that the messages of comercial break gave meaningfulness of the pragmatical values, the persuasive or ideological statement and the dialectically comunicative process. Research in Ireland to date has paid little attention to the fact that all foreign language teaching occurs in the context where the FL (foreign language) is an L3. The present study examines the extent to which students transfer or modify strategies they had previously deployed in learning Irish to their L3/L4. It is proposed that students are deploying the same strategies in their learning of Irish as an L1/L2 and the foreign language (FL) as an L3/L4, thus indicating a similar approach to the learning process.
