There are few periods in the history of any nation as tumultuous as the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries in Ireland. The following paper examines the social and religious upheavals of this period and identifies an emergent national identity among ‘Gaelic Irish’ and ‘Anglo-Irish’ Catholics. Although English forces defeated the Irish ‘rebels’ in the two major military conflicts of the period, the Desmond Rebellion (1579-84) and the Nine Years’ War (1595-1603), the means employed by England to achieve victory, cultural continuity among the Irish (and Gaelicised English), as well as the conflict over religion throughout Europe ensured that Ireland would remain …

The purpose of the current study is to provide a more detailed account of the manifestation of identities via language. I look specifically at the most recent generation of Turkish-German bilinguals living in Germany. There are many linguistic characteristics ascribable to this generation of speakers, as has been the case with preceding generations. Three types of code-switching are described; intersentential, intrasentential and what I have called the hybrid code-switch. The latter hybrid codeswitch is observed as a more recent phenomenon, thus I designate it as characteristic of the most recent generation of Turkish-Gem1an bilinguals. Tulisan ini membahas karya pengarang perempuan Prancis, Kim Lef vre. Lef vre dilahirkan di Vietnam dari ayah Prancis dan ibu Vietnam-ia sendiri kini tinggal di Prancis. Karya-karya autobiografinya berkenaan dengan kompleksitas identitas campurannya. Dalam karya novelnya Marina la Malinche, ia menyajikan kehidupan seorang wanita penerjemah, Malinche, selama invasi Spanyol di Meksiko. Malinche saat ini dianggap oleh orang Meksiko sebagai pengkhianat bangsa. Dalam novel itu Lef vre menggunakan tokoh Malinche sebagai cermin problem identitasnya. Penerjemah hanyalah seorang "pengkhianat" ketika ia menjadi korban kekuatan di luar dirinya.

Desa Madakaripura adalah desa milik Patih Gajah Mada, patih Kerajaan Majapahit yang sangat terkenal. Namun, hingga saat ini belum jelas lokasi Desa Madakaripura itu. Menurut Prapa ca pada tahun 1359 desa itu berada di wilayah Pasuruan. Tulisan ini mengupayakan penemuan desa itu. Dengan metode analisis toponim dan peta-peta akan dicoba untuk dipastikan letak Madakaripura dengan seteliti mungkin agar ahli arkeologi Indonesia bisa mencari situsnya. Sebagai kesimpulan, kemungkinan besar Madakaripura terletak di sebelah tenggara enam kilometer dari kota Pasuruan.

This paper discusses about speech levels in Sasak, the language of the indigenious people of the island of Lombok, examining the style, meaning and some historical background of the speech levels. Based on the data, it shows that Sasak, like Javanese and Balinese, also contains low, mid, high and few honorific vocabularies which are assumed to have been borrowed from Javanese (Steven, 1975; Nothofer, 1975). However, the use of the high and honorific variations are scarecly heard in the everyday common Sasaks conversation. His Islamic thought were influenced by the modern philosophy concepts such as "myths" of Paul Ricouer, postmodern concepts like 'discourse' and 'episteme', which were developed by Michel Foucault as well as 'deconstruction' of Jacques Derrida. Listening comprehension has been the forgotten skill in second language acquisition. However, in recent years, more and more studies have focused on listening comprehension and now acknowledge its importance in language acquisition. Empirical studies have explored how listeners use the two main listening processes (top-down processing and bottom-up processing). In this study, 31 low-proficiency level Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learners from Brigham Young University took the Chinese Computer Adaptive Language Test (CCALT) and listened to four listening passages, measured by idea unit analysis and local and global question types. The present study was anchored in an inquiry of second language Chinese vocabulary acquisition and learning Chinese as a foreign language. It investigated character density in L2 Chinese vocabulary recognition and production: low character density recognition, high character density recognition, low character density production, and high character density production. It also investigated the effectiveness of strategies that students perceived when faced with learning Chinese. The data was collected from the Chinese program at Brigham Young University across one semester level. Along with this data, students' vocabulary achievement test scores were collected. This study investigated the effects of multiple textual encounters of words and textual encounters of words supplemented with pictorial glosses upon the ability of a learner of French to infer additional word senses—senses of target words that were not previously encountered. Twenty-nine participants were randomly divided into two groups, Groups A and B, and were subjected to two treatments, one in which the subjects encountered target words textually twice (Repeated Textual Encounters, RTE) and one in which the subjects encountered target words once textually and once pictorially (Pictorial Encounter, PE). This article analyzes a language revitalization program implemented in an elementary classroom on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, outside of Phoenix, Arizona. The authors created the program under the assumption that classroom pedagogy cannot help students learn their native language without everyday usage of the O'odham and Pipash languages at home. The authors provide the social and historical context for the community, and the language policies applied to the two tribes, and then they provide a detailed look at strenghts and weaknesses of implementing a language community model in the classroom. Louise Bennett, affectionately called Miss Lou, is Jamaica's most beloved folk poet, performer, and collector; she was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on September 7, 1919. Her father, a baker, died when she was seven years old, and her mother worked as a dressmaker to provide for her only child. She was educated in Jamaica at Calabar Elementary School, Excelsior High School, and St. Simon's College, after which she received a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England.

Curses may result in a physical transformation or a change in the fate of the person cursed. A curse cast by a god demonstrates the power. A curse, however, eventually produces blessing. Curse and blessing are two things that are different from and opposite to one another.
