When the first technology of photography came to the Netherlands-Indies in the nineteenth century, it was only used for government purposes and was not yet meant for public consumption. On the other hand, the rise of colonial tourism in the Netherlands-Indies in the early twentieth century required a medium for promotion. Photographs were the right choice because, as the saying goes, pictures could tell more than words. Photographs for colonial tourism promotions were produced in various forms such as postcards, illustrations in magazines and guide books, and were published by the colonial government as well as by private publishers. Documentary maker Vincent Monnikendam compiled the film Mother Dao, the turtlelike (1995) from more than 200 titles of archived films of the Dutch-Indies, shot between 1912 to ca. 1933. This film is neither a remake nor an edited version, but a kind of collage from those hundreds of archival films, all were silent. Monnikendam re-arranged the images and provided them with a new sound frame, consisting of songs, chantings and poems, in Indonesian, Old Javanese, and Sundanese. This study focuses on the effect of teacher-fronted and group work instruction on beginning Chinese as a Foreign Language learners' understanding and ability to use grammar principles correctly in a Performed Culture class setting. Three sections of beginning Chinese classes at Brigham Young University were selected to participate in the study. Each section instructor was assigned one of the following teaching techniques: teacher-fronted, group work, or a combination of both teacher-fronted and group work. Quizzes focusing on grammar were given before and after instruction to all students as pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed that students being taught with the …

Ismat Chughtai of India, Tehmina Durrani of Pakistan, and Selina Hossain of Bangladesh depict some of the sociological, religious and legal aspects of wife abuse that is a chronic, yet little discussed anathema in a Sub-Continental Muslim wife's life. "Treatment of the Wife's Body in the Fiction of Indian Sub-Continental Muslim Women Writers," examines the fiction and autobiographical works of these women writers who problematize the deeply ingrained traditional modes of domestic violence as perpetuated upon the minds and bodies of Sub-Continental Muslim wives. This thesis presents a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 2006 Arabic study abroad in Amman, Jordan. This analysis aims to help organizers and participants of similar future programs to maximize language gain. The students' pre- and post-program language competencies in reading, speaking, listening, and writing are measured and compared. The students' daily journals during the period of the program are also analyzed. The quantitative analysis shows that statistically significant improvement has occurred in all four language skills. This study investigates the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension of authentic Arabic texts; in particular, it attempts to investigate the percentage of vocabulary coverage (known words) readers need to ensure reading comprehension of two reading passages from online Arabic news source. Data was collected from twenty-three Arabic as-foreign language (AFL) learners at Brigham Young University, who ranged from Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid in both productive and receptive skills. In order to continuously improve teaching and learning of a language program, it is a crucial part of program evaluation to assure that its assessment instruments have a beneficial influence on the teaching and learning procedures. For that reason, evidence was gathered to investigate the validity of test scores of the German Proficiency Exam (GPE) used by the German Section of the Germanic and Slavic Languages Department at Brigham Young University. The GPE consists of seven exam components: Listening comprehension, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and strong verbs. This study focuses on how the cross-language perception of German vowels by native speakers of North American English differs based on various levels of classroom instruction and experience in a German-speaking country. Of special interest is whether more advanced students and those with target country experience have a different cross-language perception of German vowels from naive or less-experienced listeners. It further examines how English-speaking learners perceive German sounds that are not found in English, namely the front-rounded vowels. This article is a literary analysis on Aleksandra Mikhailovna Kollontai' Vasilisa Maligina (1923) by using a feminist approach. Issues on masculinity are the focus of the analysis. The main argument of this article is that through the main character of this story - Vasilisa Maligina - Kollontai tried to expose the new image of Russian women by reconstructing the concept of Russian traditional masculinity in Russian society under former Uni Soviet communist government based on patriarchal culture.

Dialek Melayu yang dipakai para pendatang asal Maluku Selatan di Belanda ini memperlihatkan rangkaian demonstrativa dan endofora yang tidak ditemukan dalam bahasa Indonesia baku. Makalah ini mengkaji semantik dari rangkaian unsur deiktik tersebut dalam kerangka linguistik kognitif dan menjelaskannya sebagai sesuatu yang muncul dari bahasa ibu penutur, dengan mencontohkan bahasa Meher dan Leti. Makalah ini ditutup dengan mengaitkan penemuannya dengan bahasa Melayu Tangsi yang diduga adalah nenek moyang dari dialek Melayu yang digunakan pendatang Maluku di Belanda. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) has become a very influential interdisciplinary approach, which views a discourse as a form of social practice. Antipoligamy discourse, as a social practice persisted for a long time ago in Indonesia, offers chalenging discussions in the perspective of CDA. Teun van Dijk, as one of the pioneers of CDA, articulates ideology as the basis of the social representations of groups. This correlational study is to show the role of deductive and inductive reasoning abilities as aspects of cognitive development on expository text comprehension among high school students who already have a capacity to think in conceptual and hyphotetical ways and to examine how they correlate and influence the text comprehension process. This study has broaden our knowledge of language and thinking, as it is different from other previous studies that focused on comprehension process among elementary students, narrative, reading strategies, and comprehension difficulties. It is found that deductive reasoning is more significantly correlated to expository text comprehension than inductive reasoning. …
