Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman Oct 2005

Naskah Dan Rekonstruksi Sejarah Lokal Islam; Contoh Kasus Dari Minangkabau, Oman Fathurahman

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Manuscripts are not supposed to be something unknown to the public and possessed by limited circle of people. Manuscripts are cultural heritage of a nation the content of which reflects the ideas, knowledge, tradition, and the patterns of behavior of the past society. As such they can be of use to different segments of society. This paper discusses the benefits of manuscripts to the efforts of reconstructing Islamic intellectual history in Indonesia by studying the case of local manuscripts in the Minang region. These manuscripts are not only the products of a writing tradition that had developed strongly in the …

Penyalinan Naskah Melayu Di Palembang; Upaya Mengungkap Sejarah Penyalinan, Maria Indra Rukmi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In Palembang manuscripts are known to be available originating in the Palembang Palace as well as individual collection. This paper discusses the tradition of copying manuscript in Palembang, beginning with the historical background of Palembang, continuing with Malay manuscript copying in Palembang, and with a limited information on the content of the manuscript. Cultural diversity in Palembang where Javanese, Chinese, Arab elements are found, as well as those of the aristocrats and the common people, have impacted on the social lives of the people of Palembang. This diversity is reflected in the manuscripts that have been preserved, including those originating …

Kepustakawanan Dalam "The Name Of The Rose" Karya Umberto Eco, Laksmi Laksmi

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Name of the Rose, a detective novel, is set by some issues on librarianship during the Middle Age in Europe. By using discourse analysis approach, I try to know how far the concept of the librarianship was understood at that time-in the novel-based on the understanding of some concepts, starting from "library", "development system", "collection handling", which includes "classification", "censorship system" and "librarians' professionalism", until some matters on borrowing and using collection. Besides, this analysis is aimed at identifying cultural values related to the librarianship. The conclusion shows that the librarianship has an important role in providing suspense elements …

Levels Of Consciousness, Archetypal Energies, And Earth Lessons: An Emerging Worldview, Carroy U. Ferguson Sep 2005

Levels Of Consciousness, Archetypal Energies, And Earth Lessons: An Emerging Worldview, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Worldviews emerge from our individual and collective Levels of Consciousness at given points in time and space and from what we come to “believe” is possible or not. In my own experience, my research on Consciousness, and my study of various cultures, societies, and Consciousness literature, I have identified at least seven Levels of Consciousness, twenty-five Archetypal Energies, and various Earth Lessons, which we seem to commonly experience as human beings, in our own unique personal, societal, and global life spaces.

A Comparison Of Beijing And Taiwan Mandarin Tone Register: An Acoustic Analysis Of Three Native Speech Styles, Richard Christen Torgerson Aug 2005

A Comparison Of Beijing And Taiwan Mandarin Tone Register: An Acoustic Analysis Of Three Native Speech Styles, Richard Christen Torgerson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of pitch and tone register differences between native speakers of Taiwan and Beijing Mandarin by means of an acoustic analysis of three speech styles. Speech styles included spontaneous interview, spontaneous descriptive, and controlled read sentential speech. Data analysis included long segments of recorded speech in order to discern any statistically significant pitch register differences between the two dialects. Speech style and read tones were also analyzed. Results suggest that tones produced in Taiwan Mandarin are in a slightly lower register than those produced in Beijing Mandarin. Surprisingly, speech style was not a significant predictor of …

The Effect Of A Study Abroad On Acquiring Pragmatics, Johanna Katherine Brown Jul 2005

The Effect Of A Study Abroad On Acquiring Pragmatics, Johanna Katherine Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Pragmatics in Arabic needs to be studied for two main reasons: first, the large cultural difference between American and Middle Eastern society; and second, the recent surge in demand for Arabic speakers in the US. Especially in regard to refusals, what is acceptable in America is rarely acceptable in Arabic speaking countries. There are very few occasions when refusal of an offering of food or other hospitalities is acceptable. Arab culture requires one to provide family members with anything they need, including money. If that is not possible it is required to find the means for what they need. American …

Teacher Training Via Digital Apprenticeship To Master Teachers Of Arabic: Exposure, Reflection, And Replication As Instruments For Change In Novice Instructor Teaching Style, Jeremy L. Palmer Jul 2005

Teacher Training Via Digital Apprenticeship To Master Teachers Of Arabic: Exposure, Reflection, And Replication As Instruments For Change In Novice Instructor Teaching Style, Jeremy L. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The Modern Language Association (MLA) recently reported that from 1998 to 2002 there was a 92% increase in Arabic programs throughout the United States. With the increase in media coverage of current events in the Middle East, more and more students are desiring to learn about the region's languages and cultures. More teachers of Arabic are needed to meet this growing demand for Arabic instruction. This thesis investigates whether deliberate intervention via explicit and implicit exposure to the instructional behavior, skills, and strategies of master teachers of Arabic, combined with replication thereof, as well as critical personal reflection, positively alters …

Acquisition Of Violations Of English Principle B By Native Speakers Of Japanese Or Chinese, Clarion C. Mendes

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This work focuses on Principles A and B of Binding Theory as applied to English. While English has a very strict interpretation of Binding Theory, it has a violation of Principle B with sentences with locative prepositional phrases and verb phrases of caused movement or perception.

In contrast, Chinese and Japanese have a very liberal interpretation of Binding Theory. The study is involved with investigating whether or not Japanese or Chinese speakers adapt to the English violation which is typically not taught in a classroom setting, but something acquired through natural exposure.

A custom survey was designed to see if …

Partikel Fatis Dalam Bahasa Mandarin; Sebuah Telaah Awal, Hermina Sutami Apr 2005

Partikel Fatis Dalam Bahasa Mandarin; Sebuah Telaah Awal, Hermina Sutami

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Phatic particles are rarely discussed, especially in the scope of syntax, even though the notion of phatic communion had been proposed by Malinowski in 1923. In Indonesian language, Harimurti (1986) had pioneered the inclusion of phatic expression into the Indonesian parts of speech. In Mandarin language, there has not been any special interest to discuss it. Generally phatic particles overlap with interjections and interrogatives. However, this article discusses about some evidences about the differences among them.

Continental Philosophy In Britain And America, Babette Babich Jan 2005

Continental Philosophy In Britain And America, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Continental, or as it is sometimes called, contemporary European philosophy represents a range of approaches to academic philosophy distinguished from the analytic modality dominating professional or institutional philosophy in the United Kingdom and in the United States, as in Australia, Canada, and Ireland. Where the analytic tradition itself may be said to trace its own roots to Europe, e.g., positivism may be traced to France and its originator August Comte, and logical empiricism to Germany and to Austria and the writings of Gottlob Frege and Ludwig Wittgenstein and the members of the Vienna Circle, continental philosophy expresses an ideological tradition …

Tuning In (Or Out) The Big Voice Of Arundhati Roy Following The God Of Small Things, Geoffrey Kain Jan 2005

Tuning In (Or Out) The Big Voice Of Arundhati Roy Following The God Of Small Things, Geoffrey Kain

Publications

Arundhati Roy made a great splash in 1997 with publication of The God of Small Things, receiving the Brooker Prize for her first and to date only novel and thereby stepping suddenly and quite flamboyantly into the spotlight of international literary notoriety. Not surprisingly, most who have read her highly acclaimed novel have waited for another novel to follow in its wake. After nine years, a second novel has not yet followed. Roy has said she will write another novel when and if she feels ready and has a story that needs to be told, but some impatience among …

'Listen, Rama’S Wife!’: Maithil Women’S Perspectives And Practices In The Festival Of Sāmā-Cakevā, Coralynn V. Davis Jan 2005

'Listen, Rama’S Wife!’: Maithil Women’S Perspectives And Practices In The Festival Of Sāmā-Cakevā, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

As a female-only festival in a significantly gender-segregated society, sāmā cakevā provides a window into Maithil women’s understandings of their society and the sacred, cultural subjectivities, moral frameworks, and projects of self-construction. The festival reminds us that to read male-female relations under patriarchal social formations as a dichotomy between the empowered and the disempowered ignores the porous boundaries between the two in which negotiations and tradeoffs create a symbiotic reliance. Specifically, the festival names two oppositional camps—the male world of law and the female world of relationships—and then creates a male character, the brother, who moves between the two, loyal …

Náhuatl Y Español: Un Caso De Convergencia Sintáctica, Alma Ramirez-Trujillo

Recent research suggests that, when the two languages spoken by bilinguals share certain features, but one of the languages favors the use of a particular structure, possibly due to pragmatic reasons, the two languages may converge in the relevant domain (Hulk and Müller 2000; Müller and Hulk 2001; Sánchez 2003; Sánchez, 2004; Toribio 2001). This in turn may lead to convergence between the two languages in a society where most of the speakers are bilingual, assuming bilinguals and second language learners are often the agents of language change (Winford, 2003). Classical Nahuatl is a polysynthetic language (Baker, 2001) with variable …

Beyond Currywurst And Döner: The Role Of Food In German Multicultural Literature And Society, Heike Henderson Oct 2004

Beyond Currywurst And Döner: The Role Of Food In German Multicultural Literature And Society, Heike Henderson

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

After outlining some striking similarities between ethnic food marketing and multicultural literature, I intend to analyze the role of food in contemporary German literature and society. Specifically, I will look at two texts by Rafik Schami ("Kebab ist Kultur") and Uwe Timm (Die Entdeckung der Currywurst). In both of these texts, food plays a crucial role. In "Kebab ist Kultur," food is a marker of difference and alterity. In Die Entdeckung der Currywurst, food is the impetus to trace history - personal history as well as the history of postwar Germany. Questions related to cultural differences, history, and …

Dynamic Semantic Web, Rudolf Kaehr Jan 2004

Dynamic Semantic Web, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

Dynamic Semantic Web (DSW) is based at first on the techniques, methods and paradigms of the emerging Semantic Web movement and its applications. DSW is advancing one fundamental step further from a static to a dynamic concept of the Semantic Web with extended flexibility in the navigation between ontologies and more profound transparency of the informational system. Web Services are now redefinded by Semantic Web. To proof the advantages of DSW, it is the main aim of this project to develop the tools and methods necessary to develop a DSW based Web Service (DSW business application). The existing framework of …
